You know you have to watch. It's not a question of whether we love the show. And certainly we can't enjoy the music. It's just part of American culture. So let's huddle together and keep each other company as we face the horrors and the occasional delights of another season.
ADDED: Simon Cowell says – after a big family whoops with joy when their girl makes it through to Hollywood — "You know what's amazing about this country is that you're genuinely happy when someone you know does well... The idea of me knowing somebody, they get good news, and celebrating with them... I couldn't do it."

All right, now we're talking. I got the chips, the dip, two cases of beer and the Jaeger. Remember the rules. Randy sez dog, shot of Jaeger. Paula acts crazy, shot of Jaeger. Secrest acts gay, shot of Jaeger. Simon is nice, shot of Jaeger. Wait one of the those is wrong. Nevermind. Woooooooooooooo!
Idol is back!!!!!!!!
OMG-Temptress's mother is huge-how sad. Oh and Temptress is an awful singer.
I think this will be my fourth consecutive year of having no idea what you're talking about.
OH MY GOD. SOMEONE JUST CALLED THE PROFESSOR "TEMPTRESS" ON ANOTHER THREAD!!!!!
So... these people with mothers...
Man, I'm glad to switch over to the debate...
Will come back to this on Tivo.
Alexis the Vet, the real John McCain.
When I heard the Idol theme music, it was comforting. Then, about 5 minutes into it, well, I just didn't have the stomach for making fun of people who already seem pretty fragile and helpless. I switched back and forth from Fox News.
Still, there was an interesting moment when Simon overheard one of the contestants and her family celebrating the fact that she was going to Hollywood. Simon turned to Paula and said "Americans are so remarkable. When people you care about do well, you really are happy for them."
I want to Trooper York to come over and watch Idol with me. Sounds like a good time.
Simon suffers from an ugly case of Schadenfreude.
It's just part of American culture.
Not my culture.
Does that mean I get to build a casino?
I swear, I tried, I watched for a couple minutes, guy shows up with some weird gold snake and green tattoo design on his chest, the panelists all hate him, he promises to get his chest waxed.
Grab remote. Back to Law and Order, SVU reruns on USA Network. Back to my computer. Back to safety.
Actually, no. After twitch boy won the season before last, I swore I would never watch it again, but got talked into it last season, which was even worse, especially that useless Blake. Never watching it again.
AI reached its high point with Carrie Underwood. It has gone into the sewer ever since.
""You know what's amazing about this country is that you're genuinely happy when IRAQ does well... The idea of me knowing somebody, they get good news, and celebrating with them... I couldn't do it."
Simon Cowell channeling the American Left
Re: Simon's comment. Yeah, my husband is British and as the Morrissey song says, "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful."
I would much rather watch Clean House.

I'm going to take this as further evidence that I've successfully shed my erstwhile Briton skin.

Someone you know? It is family! Cowell could not celebrate or be happy for a family member who got good news?
Man, that is self-centered to the extreme.
I got somewhat hooked on the Idol spinoff, Next Great American Band this past fall. Much more substantial musically, and a fascinating array of genres. (Including musicians, as opposed to singers, helps.)
Mainly though, the show made me a fan of Sheila E. who sat in the Paula Abdul judge's seat, so to speak. If Paula were to decide she needs to "spend more time with her family," Sheila E. would class up the show enormously.
I think that stalker guy posts here.
