Out there, alone, a man surfs:

Closer in, surfing seems ancient and decayed:

Again, Althouse is in the groove.

I feel like the weenie I was accused of being after warning/complaining about the weather in the Bay Area. Althouse has hit the perfect moment for weather, not to mention the perfect car, and the perfect hotel.

I say that with absolutely no jealousy, only wonder at your spectacular luck. I go to the Bay Area in November, and it's drizzling, 45°, and I get a Pontiac with coffee stains as a rental car. Althouse goes, and it's what you see in those beautiful photos.

No wonder we all want to live vicariously through you.

If I came upon a holy rock like that, it would have ended up in my pocket.

You might be arrested if you did, Peter!

It was a picture-perfect day I see. Am looking forward to more from there.

Wow, imagine my shock at (net)surfing to ye olde Althouse blog for some political crumbs and seeing pics of my neighborhood. That looks like Rodeo Beach out by Fort Cronkhite. And the venerable surf shop in Mill Valley. It never looked so good. Great pics.

3:30 and all's well, y'all.

Pics 1, 2, and 5 are Bolinas. 3 and 4 are somewhere to the south.

Look at my Florida pics from last week. That happens to me too, and because it just happened, I was really down about another trip after only 3 full days back in NY. That weariness motivated me to book my room at the best hotel. Then I did luck into finding someone — one of my readers — who suggested the ride and had that car.

But bad things make good photos too, and the sunny day actually made it harder. The most spectaculr shots were ruined by glinting sunlight.

And I didn't pick up the rock.

That looks like a high quality rock perfect for string winding.

It was generous of you to leave it for someone else to find.

After all, everybody wants a rock to wind a piece of string around.

Are there ignoble dogs, or do those just refuse to stand guard?

Our cat is of noble mien, and never stands guard. It's beneath her, as are most things, save for eating.

Sponges are ignoble. Yet

Francis Ponge :

As in the sponge, there is, in the orange, an aspiration to recover its countenance after enduring the ordeal of expression. But where the sponge always succeeds, the orange never does : for its cells have burst, its tissues are torn... Do we have to take sides between two ways of enduring oppression badly? - The sponge is only a muscle filled with wind, with clean water or dirty water, as may be, : this gymnastic is ignoble

But the sponge is better able to resist the oppressor. Its ignoble labor enfranchises it.

Probably a quote from Virgil.
