There are the cafés with free WiFi, the cafés with paid-for WiFi...

... and then there are the cafés where they ban computers:

Order, eat, pay, leave.. keep it moving. No hanging around surfing the internet taking a whole table by yourself.

"Limit" your cell phone use. What the hell does that mean?

I suppose if a private business would rather brand itself as a place for conversation and the newspaper, they can. I can tell you a cafe with a policy like that would never survive in a college campus neighborhood. Still, my favorite cafe was a converted church that doubled as an art gallery, with old pews and sofas mixed in with tables of various heights and sturdy chairs. You could sit and chat with the girls over tea, or you could retreat into the corner and puzzle through physics equations. It worked!

Note the use of “please” and “sorry.”

Whatever might else be said, it certainly is a polite shopping bag.

A Luddite cafe run by the Unknown Comic?

The ban is only on weekends. I wonder why that is.

At any rate I'm sure there are people who would enjoy a cafe with such rules. I'm just not one of them.

Shawn--I'm guessing that the weekend ban has something to do with big crowds, shortage of tables, and the tendency for computer users to spend longer periods of time at the table than other customers.

And I wouldn't like a place like that either.

I bet they allow public breastfeeding.
