A towering view of Lady Liberty. It never ceases to humble me especially in these times where tyranny has vowed to take it down. Thanks for sharing.

OK, I admit it. I first looked at the breasts.

Breasts? What breasts? All I see is an upskirt shot of some swirly robes hiding some sort of golden door yearning to breath free and an anonymous person grinning a goofy grin with the apparent goal of donning Old Glory as a mantle.

Hey, I just did the Statue of Liberty tour last month!

We had "monument passes" to go up on the Statue, but everyone had to wait in the line to board the ferries. It took about an hour to get on. And it was hot! Those guys in the Statue of Liberty outfits were just boiling. One of the guys, finishing his shift, took off the robes, and you could see he was just covered in sweat. I liked the carnival atmosphere at Battery Park.

I looked up at the Statue from below, just like in your picture here. But the view from the ferry coming around was the most majestic. Imagine what the immigrants thought as they headed over to Ellis Island! My son and I also stopped there, and I enjoyed the exhibits. That's an experience I won't forget.

Thanks for the reminder! I wish I could visit Lady Liberty more often. She really does stand for our values, and seeing her up close brings it all home.

Have a great day!

Sorry, Ruth Anne, it's only me and I don't vortex online. Here's one perspective on liberty- the lady’s index finger is eight feet long!

I think her original appellation more fitting these days, "Liberty Enlightening the World." "Statue of" is static, the other more about dynamic idealism. Almost neoconish

(Meade, yes, but please don't ever say those words in Qom--)

"Liberty and Justice for all" -- one cannot exist without the other.

"One ought to fight for the laws of the city as if they were its walls" -- Heraclitus.

I think many see Liberty as license, rather than as being intimately mixed with the notion of Justice and the Laws that embody that notion.

The take I took is that you were trying to sneak a peek up the lady's dress.

Why would think that, Zeb?

Simply because the photo looks directly up the skirt does not mean it is an upskirt shot.

Oh, you Althousehaters are too much!!

I hate tourists.

Personally I've always preferred our more martial Britannia with her trident and shield. Only so much upholding of liberty a gal can do with just a torch and a book.

Palladian: Are you smacking me down? (Or Althouse?) Any out-of-towner visiting the monuments is a tourist.

Hate tourists? We're all tourists in this world. We just have different preferences about which attractions to take in. But surely, when you have guests, the question is: what do your guests want to see?

Seems like those got the Puritans pretty far.
