Their problem is that all of them have their kooky points. They're not boring enough, as it were. Giuliani has his . . . colourful past; Romney has the dog thing (and, if you're Andrew Sullivan, the Mormon thing); and McCain . . . well, is McCain even a real candidate anymore?
I was about to say there's a fine line between gravitas and boring, but it's actually a big overlap. Cheney did well against Lieberman by returning his zings with humor. Boring is a bigger kiss of death than grating.
