Best guess is that it's a blushing bromeliad- neoregelia carolinae. But it really looks like an oyster, pearl and nut dish you can get in Tokyo.
Jane, I second that...have a couple bromeliads, but have never seen such bizarre sh*t in my care (or that of a professional brom caretaker before).
Saw this at the dayjob today, and it's given me nightmares.
I looked at this picture again when I was eating... I don't recommend that. It's disgusting.
