Headline that confused me: "J-Lo and Anthony defend marriage."

For a minute there, I thought they were taking a stand against gay marriage. But really, they're just arguing with people who think they're having a rough time of it between the two of them.

A more interesting wedding story is that of Liz Hurley and her new husband. The father-in-law has disowned his son and is threatening to sue Liz for disrespecting the Hindu religion. She might be subject to arrest if ever returns to India.

Whoa, I got pretty excited there for a second.

This actually matters to me. No, not the celebrity marriage part, but the idea that a defense of marriage and the opposition to same-sex marriage are one and the same.

I believe that SSM is inevitable. I also believe that there is much we can do to strengthen the institution of marriage -- through cultural, not legal means. I regret that when SSM comes to pass, the idea of advocating for healthy marriages will sound a bit like advocating for states' rights in the wake of the successes of the civil rights movement.

Yep, retrograde opponents of SSM are doing more harm to the institution than folks who just want more people to be able to marry (people that they want to marry).

But, we degree. J-Lo is married? I am out of the celebritocracy loop...

Here is what I don't get (and keep in mind that I am a happily married heterosexual male with kids, a dog, a mortgage, etc.)

Why is it necessary to legally define marriage as only the variety that I have? As a church sacrament, I can see how individual churches might choose to define it as they see fit, but as a matter of law, who really cares if two (or for that matter more) adults of sound mind choose to get married and call it marriage? I mean, they aren't hurting you, are they?
