Richardson was a carpetbagger when he came here nearly thirty years ago. He's been working all the angles to get here since then. Good policy doesn't mean squat to him just as long as he panders to the right voting blocs to win the next election. He just ran afoul of the legislsture here by calling a special session at the end of the regular session to pass some tabled legislation. One of the bills was for full legal domestic partnerships. It was correctly seen by the legislature as pandering to a voting bloc in his next election attempt rather than trying to effect good policy for his predominately catholic constituancy. The senate adjourned without considering the bills. The house stayed and passed them. The senate by rule has to reconvene tomorrow but by all indications is not in the mood to do any thing for him and may adjourn again. We'll see. He may be the best of the Democratic candidates but that doesn't say much for the rest of them.
How does living someplace for thirty years make you a carpetbagger? I've lived in Arizona for nine years and consider myself to be fully a citizen of the state!
Richardson was my congressman over 20 (when I was living in New Mexico). I went to a town hall (before the term was coined by Ross Perot, but it's what it was) meeting in Socorro that he hosted on energy policy and rural electrification in 1986. I'm not sure how it got him a bunch of votes he wouldn't have gotten anyway, but there is a reason he kept getting re-elected to Congress from that district with 70% of the vote-- he did a darn good job or representing the people there, and even the Republicans there said so.
And something else-- like it or not, the only way we are going to get out of Iraq is through some kind of negotiated settlement, including negotiating with people who hate our guts and/or who would love to snooker us if they can. And when we do I'd rather have someone with some diplomatic experience like Bill Richardson sitting at the table representing the United States than some Senator whose biggest experience with diplomacy is writing legislation that can get to 51 votes in the U.S. Senate.
Some of Reagan's policies as governor of California would not pass muster with today's Republican party. I don't know much about Richardson, but he seems to be like Reagan in that he has a sense of humor. If the Democrats nominate him, they'll win the White House. Bill Clinton, like Reagan, and unlike the humorless, self-righteous scolds who make up most of the Democrats' leadership, was someone you could spend an evening with. I get the same vibes from Richardson.

John needs glasses.
Bill Richardson couldn't lift Ronald Reagan's jock.
For some reason, I've always thought that Bill Richardson was tall and thin. I wonder who I confused him with.
Re: John's observation: Is he wearing beer goggles?
OMG! I think it's a perfect match! Why didn't I see this before?
Could be a busy weekend, for packing bags, eh?
Chez Althouse, we think the Richardson photo was posed to evoke Reagan.
I think it's more James Doohan. This one is a good match.
They may have aimed for Reagan, but I think they hit Oliver Platt!
Well, if nothing else he's likely to fund the space program.
And he'd be out of New Mexico.
Hm....

He looks just like Jim Belushi with a toupee. It's uncanny.
No foolin'?
Ronald Reagan was drafted by the Kansas City A's?

Great picture. Except for the fact that they look nothing alike.
