Only in England - you can turn your kids into Michelin men monsters and no one says a word, but give a dog one too many pork scratchings and you're nailed by the law.
Negligently overfeed your kids until they are so obese they have breathing problems, arthritis, and can barely walk... fail to have their chronic ear infections treated... and, yes, you should probably expect to receive a visit from Children's Protective Services.
Isn't this primarily why we have laws and ordinances -- to protect the less powerful from suffering at the hands of the more powerful and to effect behavior we agree to be less cruel and more civilized?
Those brothers were slowly and unnecessarily killing their pooch with selfish negligent "kindness." They've been fined and served notice. Consequently, they promised to change their behavior.
Blimey, that touched a nervous nerve. Never let us overlook that we have a ROYAL Society for preventing cruelty to animals, but just a NATIONAL Soc for same to children. Enough said.
Only on the Althouse blog would the commenters take the side of the guilty brothers charged of overfeeding their dog to twice the weight it should be... If the government doesn't exist to step in and take control of situations like this, then what the hell does it exist for?
Why of course to wage an illegal, genocidal war in Iraq of course. Sheep may safely graze whilst Iraqi babies are blown apart. Makes you proud to be British. Not.
Forgive me, but the 'Jenny Craig' link only took me to some chatter about Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.
I doubt 'Ms Craig' is one of her nom du plumes or even guerres, though, leaving that aside, one does recall the words of novelist Martin Amis - whom I largely, though not in this instance, despise - who opined that the said lady would undoubtably be "a generous lover."
Gahrie: What? If the governments starts knocking on your door to see if you're feeding your dog IAMS, when you really should be feeding him Pedigree, then I see your point. Saving a defenseless animal's life is a little more serious than the government intruding in your personal business, however. I'm sure you had no problem with their attempt to step in over Terry Schiavo.

Our society founded the RSPCA. Your society founded Jenny Craig.
There's a method to our madnesses.
Cheers,

Actually, the UK government is also trying to dictate what you can feed to your children also.

Good for everyone.

And who the feck is Jenny Craig?

Purpose of Government?

I'd like to get the blighters to arrest my wife. She overfeeds my Jack Russell Terrier and he has fat pockets.
Our society founded the RSPCA. Your society founded Jenny Craig.
Your society lost an empire and is now called Londonistan.
Our society is the resort of first choice whenever anything goes wrong anywhere on the planet.
Stifle, Edith.
Brad:
Oh please tell me you are not serious....
If that is truly your point of view, then I must ask you...
What can't the government control?
And who the feck is Jenny Craig?
See? If only the Duchess of Pork had chosen Jenny Craig, it would be a moot question.

- Defense of territory.
- To secure our constitutional rights.
- And the maintaining of law and order.
"Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves."
- Ronald Reagan
I say this as a dog lover extraordinaire, but one who doesn't respect government intrusion into her private life beyond the expected.

Will somebody for feck's sake tell me who Jenny Craig is? I can't be ars*d to look her up on Google, but I won't be sleeping easy 'til I know.
Stifle, Edith.
There is an irony here, which is too delicious.
It includes a British sitcom being the inspiration for All In the Family, and goes downhill from there.
Anyway, whew, what a day on Althouse, eh? Post, post, post for hours. I don't know about you, but this meathead is off to enjoy herself tonight.
Cheers,
Victoria

I love the smell of arrogance in the early evening........

No man could ask any more.

Victoria: You lost me at "Ronald Reagan." :(
