So what was Condoleezza Rice doing two days after the election?

Photo-op-ing with Michelle Kwan.

Why is Rice suddenly drifting around in the afternoon TV section of American politics?

Bland inspirationalism for women.

That makes sense?

No.

salvage, what did Michelle Kwan ever do to you??

I'm sorry, Ann, but I just don't follow your line of reasoning here. This was undoubtedly planned some time ago. What was Rice supposed to do once the election results were in? Cancel all previous engagements and go into mourning? Resign from office and take the veil? Or just continue on and do her job, which involves many "feel good" moments such as this?

What's she a failure at, salvage?

Being a Democrat? Hating Bush?

Seriously - what'd she do that makes her insane and incompetent, other than be on The Wrong Side in your calculus?

Me, I don't care if she's doing photo-ops now. Like Ronin said, this stuff's all pre-scheduled. And, hell, it's not like the State Department does anything very useful, or the Secretary of State does anything important.

(I'm half joking, half serious. The State Department, as near as I can tell, needs to be gutted and rebuilt - no matter which party is in charge at the moment, or who the current Secretary is.

But maybe I only think that because I'm a hawk and I want an effective State Department that's actually on Our Side, as I see it. I'd be more happy if that happened on the Democrats' watch than if it didn't under the Republicans'.)

From the way she was acting, you wouldn't think that their entire middle east policy is falling apart. Oh, and by the way, Afghanistan is a fucking mess, too.

She's the Secretary of State. Unless you can point to examples of how *diplomatic* failures caused Iraq and Afghanistan to become "a fucking mess", I don't see how she deserves the blame for it. Especially given that the general policies in both nations were set by her predecessor (who really *was* a fuckup), and she's been stuck dealing with the aftermath.
