I'm off to quickly have my fill of the northwestern Wyoming scenery.

I'll return -- unless I'm terribly unlucky -- with pictures. Meanwhile, you can use this post to talk about whatever comes up today.

I want ice cream.

Here's just a brief note: there's a tropical storm coming up the Caribbean; looks like it's heading to the Gulf. If you're the praying type, please start now, and don't stop until the end of November. Thanks.

ROAD TRIP!!

Maxine Weiss म्हणाले...

Who takes a vacation on the 1st of the month? The rent's due, there are bills to be paid, correspondence, insurance, taxes (all those April extensions due now....).

Ann, you need to get home to pay your bills!

Anyone vacationing on the 1st of a month is shirking their obligations.

To be out-of-town on the 1st....the ultimate rebellion!

Don't you feel the least bit guilty?,

...while the rest of us are dashing off to the bank and post office...you are sauntering about...

Lights, electric, gas....you'll be late !!!

That rent is due, to be payed on the first...

...Or in Ann's case, collected on the 1st.

Maxine, you forgot "peace." Should we interpret this as a sign of hostility?

tiggeril म्हणाले...

I'd declare jihad, but... you know.

Ice cream.

To cheer us up while we await Ann's return. I’m sure she would have linked to this if she hadn’t been on the road: Tucked away in the Home & Garden section of the Times, of all places, the story of Art Buchwald’s miraculous return home from the hospice, where he had gone to die in February. 80 and going strong!

Bill, I didn't realize you were watching me that closely.

...like a hawk.

I can feel your eagle eyes covering my every move, Bill.

Love, Maxine

Maxine,

I've been wanting to ask. How does one cook vegan German food?

Lots and lots of kraut and cabbage?

vegetables vinaigrette?

Potatoes and more potatoes?

The world wants to know

tiggeril म्हणाले...

You can make German food without bacon drippings?

Maxine Weiss म्हणाले...

I'm not German, sadly.

You can use soy bacon---don't know how it tastes...

but, you can replace virtually all meats with soy versions.

The soy ground beef is very nice.

I just read a study yesterday saying how folks who stuck to a vegan (absolutely no animal) diet reduced their rates of diabetes and heart disease.

Animal protein is hard on the kidneys. You are much better off with soy protein.

That being said, I do cheat, and often.

Peace/Love, Maxine

I make my potato salad with all-soy dressing, skin-on diced potatoes, shallots, roasted garlic, celery, cumin, green pepper, fresh red pepper, tabasco, and just a hint of spinach....

Mix together and then top with paprika!

It's very good.

I make a mean Gazpacho too, so refreshing!

Peace, Maxine

Ann,

Did you see this note on SCOTUS? Apparently a 9th circuit dissent cited to a law blog. Here is the full quotation from SCOTUS (my HTML skills are limited so please forgive if the links don't work):

Finally, as the discussion continues over the proper place of law blogs within the legal establishment, this blog post at UCL Practitioner notes that the dissent from a denial for an en banc rehearing issued yesterday in Harper v. Poway Unified School District (9th Circuit) actually cites this analysis posted to the Volokh Conspiracy.

Hi! I'm back, after driving more than I intended... There's a lot of burned trees in Yellowstone... And I was this close to a wolf.

girlfriday म्हणाले...

Did you skip Idaho altogether?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

Girlfriday: I drove the Great Basin Highway and other parts of Idaho on Sunday, but I know I missed some of the great drives! I still haven't been to Montana, one of the handful of states I haven't seen.

bill म्हणाले...

I have nothing against a vegetarian diet or soy products...BUT there is no such thing as soy bacon or even turkey bacon. Bacon is not a process, it is a thing and that thing is pork belly. Anyone selling or promoting bacon that is not 100% pig is a liar and a cheat.

I'm generally an easy-going guy and can let a lot of things slide, but sometimes you gotta take a stand and this one is mine.

Once, while hunting Sasqautch, I had to killed a wolf with my bear hands.

1. Killing a wolf with bear hands isn't that impressive.

2. Wouldn't having bear hands mean you are Sasquatch?

andrew, back in the 1950s, my Mom and her mom and brother stopped in Cody, and got food poisoning.

In the late 70s, I was in Cody with my parents and brother. We all got food poisoning.

I'll never stop in Cody again.

Yes, Southern Idaho is not known for its breathtaking scenery.

Plus, if you're going to be in the Northwest, you don't want to miss Boise. Clearly you love Madison; I think you'd find a lot in common with Boise (which just passed Spokane for third largest NW City).
