Conservative Blogress Diva.

GayPatriot is looking to choose the "Conservative Blogress Diva," and I'm one of the nominees. How would a diva say go over there and vote for me? It's not a question of who's the most conservative, you know. It's a question of who would make the best diva. Think about it!

I saw it earlier and gave you a vote - looks like some stiff competition

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

I'll bet none of those other women write about gay men as much as I do!

tiggeril ayon kay ...

I've never heard of a lot of those women. Weird.

Palladian ayon kay ...

You're the most "fabulous" Ann, and I say that in the butchest voice I can muster.

Aren't at least a few of those other women actually sort of hostile toward gay people? That does not a diva make.

Meade ayon kay ...

Diva, schmiva! Ann, you don't even sing!

chuck b. ayon kay ...

As sort of a lapsed liberal (or whatever I am), I feel ambivalent about voting for Ann as a conservative.

Perhaps for emotional reasons only (because I can't think of any intellectual ones), I'd rather vote for "Ann Althouse, the liberal who supports the Iraq mission" than "Ann Althouse, the conservative who supports abortion rights and same-sex marriage".

It doesn't make any sense, but I must acknowledge that I feel ambivalent.

Laura Reynolds ayon kay ...

I voted for Ann. Surprised to not see the Anchoress.

Peter Hoh ayon kay ...

Diva? Yes. And I mean that in a good way.

Conservative? I'm having a hard time with this. Ann is one of the free-range bloggers who don't fit into the conservative/liberal dualism.

But if conservatives want to regard her as their diva, I'm all for that.

TBMD ayon kay ...

I tend to agree - I've never found that Prof. Althouse to be anything similar to a "movement" conservative. Or for that matter, even a "self identified" conservative, so I'm not sure that this a conservative diva makes.

But this certainly is one of my regular stops on the web.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

Boring: Divas make own own rules. We don't join movements.

Hindi-nagpakilala ayon kay ...

I'll bet none of those other women write about gay men as much as I do!

K. Lopez of The Corner does. But not in a very positive way.

You should win Ann, hands down, if there is any justice in this world!!!

Richard Lawrence Cohen ayon kay ...

I voted for you, Ann. In fact I think I'll go over and vote for you again. I always thought I'd vote for you for anything.

I see you've got that beginning-of-the-alphabet thing working for you, too.

Richard Lawrence Cohen ayon kay ...

Damn, I tried and it said, "You've already voted in this poll"! What's this world coming to?

Peter Hoh ayon kay ...

Michelle Malkin was leading in the polls when I voted. I've read her blog -- not very diva-ish, if you ask me. And I mean that in a good way.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

Richard: Yeah, one thing I like about this poll, as opposed to the Weblog Awards, is that you can't repeat vote (unless you have more than one computer).

XWL ayon kay ...

I find the poll somewhat sexist/genderist.

All the biggest divas I've known have had penises.

And only being able to vote once per computer isn't very Democratic (as in Democratic party, not the other meaning of the word, vote early, vote often has long been their motto)

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

That is, to win a Weblog Award, you've got to link and beg for ten days. I'm too much of a diva to do that.

Larry K: Yeah, look at the blog masthead quotes.

Hindi-nagpakilala ayon kay ...

Malkin is a prude. I think that is an instant disqualification for being a diva if you ask me!

Beth ayon kay ...

K-Lo and Malkin are no Divas. Althouse isn't conservative. What a weird survey!

Goatwhacker ayon kay ...

I'd rather be called a diva than a blogress I think, it sounds like a mix of blogging and ogress.

chuck b. ayon kay ...

You should ask Insta-P for his support. You'd win for sure. He likes you more than those other wannabes.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

Elizabeth: "K-Lo and Malkin are no Divas. Althouse isn't conservative. What a weird survey!"

I think the key is that conservatives need a diva, not that the diva is so specifically conservative.

chuck b.: "chuck b. said...
You should ask Insta-P for his support. You'd win for sure."

I think you're missing the internal linkage dynamic of Pajamas -- which is, of course, another reason to vote for me. I won't throw my lot in with those pseudo-dominant males. They should crawl to me.

chuck b. ayon kay ...

"They should crawl to me."

Indeed!

(And, no, I do not understand Pajamas--please do NOT explain it to me.)

Consider this a bit of wisdom from a former diva herself: You must be prepared to be ruthless in order to win!

By. Any. Means. Necessary!

If that calls for a making temporary alliances with males, well, you can bet the others are thinking about it right now!

I'm just saying think about it--cuz
right now you're in third place.

Remember: Ruthless!

Beth ayon kay ...

Ann: "I think the key is that conservatives need a diva, not that the diva is so specifically conservative."

Ok, I get that. But it's still a conundrum to me. Diva is anathema to conservatism. Conservatives need a good drag queen, but then, they wouldn't be conservative anymore. I'm not conceding diva-dom to conservatives. Let 'em make their own culture and not co-opt mine!

Eli Blake ayon kay ...

Hey, I just voted and your running a very attainable third this time (204 votes vs. 229 and 228 for the only two ahead of you). Of course they listed the ballot alphabetically (you know how politicians are always scrambling for the top spot).

Anyway, just because I like your blog because it isn't 100% conservative, I will make a point of getting my 'worker' to vote from my work computer in the morning.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

Elizabeth: What culture are you idenifying as yours? Gay male culture?

Mary E. Glynn ayon kay ...

Remember the Under Their Robes controversy? I am betting that some commenters here portray themselves under different genders. Or play more than one character. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

cheers

XWL ayon kay ...

Are there any Lesbian divas?

(Cathy Seipp adds a snarky aside about Tammy Bruce in her post regarding the voting that suggests the 'comfortable shoes' might get in the way of diva-dom)

Prof. Althouse, before you get my vote you must produce visual evidence that you own (or in the past sported) a pair of shoes with heels 2.5" or beyond and could be described as 'eff me' shoes, cause that's one of the main markers of diva-dom in my book.

(Just look at Moxie's banner boots for reference)

Simon ayon kay ...

Since when have Ann, or Tammy Bruce, been conservatives - let alone "conservative divas" (a la Laura Ingraham, presumably)?

I don't know many of these names, and I'm not sure if we're voting to give them an acolade. I refuse to give props to Carol Liebau, whose writing at ConfirmThem I loved during the Roberts nomination, but who sold her soul when the Miers nomination came out (I'm sorry, but there are people who came out of that furore unscathed, Beldar for example, and others, Carol and Hewitt, who tarred themselves for life as far as I'm concerned). And Michelle Malkin is just awful; even when I agree with her (which is more often than I would expect myself to), I just hate her writing.

At the end of it, I voted for Bridget Johnson (GOP vixen), but I probably prefer Beth from My Vast Right Wing Conspiracy.

The Drill SGT ayon kay ...

I voted for you and though you have top billing, I think you're gonna come in 3rd. sorry

Beth ayon kay ...

Ann,

That's a fair question: my culture is queer culture, and it's reductive to try to break that down to gay men versus lesbians. I most definately identify more with gay male culture than I do with K-Lo! The idea of a conservative diva is, to me at least, like lipstick on a pig. So I couldn't vote in that poll--but if I had, it was between you and Cathy Young, neither of whom are conservatives, at least not cultural conservatives. How on earth can a cultural conservative be a diva? This does not compute.

Ann Althouse ayon kay ...

Elizabeth: "Reductive" isn't much of a response. I really don't see much connection between gay males and lesbians in the dimension we're talking about (divas). GayPatriot, which is sponsoring the vote, is looking for a diva. I don't get the idea that lesbians get to deny that to him on the ground that he's not on the left!

Beth ayon kay ...

Ann,

I sure can't deny Gaypatriot his right to construct this fantasy creature, the "conservative diva" but the very fact that Kathryn Lopez is nominated points to an essential problem with the concept. Rightwing gays have to contort quite a bit to find gay culture in a conservative context. They have every right to make the attempt, but I don't have to play along. GP is a big boy; it's not like I'm teling him there's no Santa.

And I'll hold to my assertion that as a lesbian, culturally I have more in common with gay men than you recognize. I'll agree that's less true for seperatist lesbians living on a commune in the Arkansas hills, but who cares about them anyway?

Nikki Chau ayon kay ...

How dare them put Michelle - slap me - Malkin in the same category as you? I call foul. Btw, voting mission accomplished (per your request), unlike *that* other mission...

knox ayon kay ...

the heck is "Sondra K" ?

(no offense, Sondra)
