I know it's supposed to be a compliment, and certainly you are worthy of such. But even when I read it in context, it's just hard to see it :) An 800-pound hummingbird? When that bird flits, you get OUT OF THE WAY!
Okay but let's get the image right: an 800-pound hummingbird, blogging interstate while burning up the miles in her silvery TT and sporting a fetchingly sassy new haircut... a mind-expanding blogging experiment of one: tuned in, turned on, synapses afire.
I'm glad you're an 800 lb. hummingbird -- just stay away from my car windows -- and my hummingbird feeder for that matter. I can't afford the sugar water bill (besides the monthly check to Juicy Juice for my kids).
LOL. It was just the 800-pound gorilla thing. I was driven to the absurdity of it, wanting to say that Ann was a rather formidable and dominant hummingbird, an agile-minded heavyweight in the blogosphere, and then the gorilla expression came to mind . . . but I agree, it does create a bizarre and distracting and ridiculous visual image.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
MCG: Yes, you have to turn it on. Go to settings, then commenting. I'm just fending off the spambots.
Is that like "she's a big woman, but she's light on her feet"?
Wow I hope there is no connection back to the old "Do I look fat" thread!
Yikes!

Ron: Yeah. This post is making me look fat. I was considering this quote for the masthead, but...

Amba: That's the trouble with concrete imagery... people get pictures and start thinking about them.
Ann: I vote for putting the quote on the masthead; who else would have such a thing?
Better than "She's the Glenn or Glenda of Instapundit."
How's about:
"Ann Althouse -- she's like Jessica Alba only waaaay smarter."
Better than an 800 pound hummingbird, I guess!
Interesting. We women DO want to be powerful and influential -- but if the metaphor is bigness, we back away. . . . Peculiar to our culture?
In this one's defense, it's so absurd it CAN'T be taken literally. You see the image, then you shake your head and send it away.
Come on. Ann got it as the total compliment it was -- in context. Out of context, though . . . it's grotesque. Even scary.
