You can sense it.<br /><br />The only top politician I ever really felt this with was Paul Simon, from Illinois. I didn't know it at the time but it turns out he was a Lutheran. I felt that I could understand him from the inside.<br /><br />I also feel this with the basketball player Tim Duncan. He grew up in the Danish West Indies and I can feel an affinity for what I take to be his Lutheran attitude.<br /><br />I don't understand affiliation by skin color or gender, but do understand something mediated through a common cultural institution.<br /><br />I just don't think outward characteristics can determine inner characteristics.
