The genuine sign of disrespect when etiquette calls for standing is to sit or turn one's back (for example, the police protests of De Blasio) - kneeling is usually a greater reverence than standing is, which is obvious if the flag is replaced with the Queen, the Pope, or any other object of reverence.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6329595.post-59677382196597493532017-09-27T23:38:56.558-05:002017-09-27T23:38:56.558-05:00Exiled,

They have tried to do that for more than a century and failed because it was an imposition from the top down. You have to get children playing the sport. A 20 year old who has never thrown a baseball or football before will not become good at it. Perhaps you're just conjecturing based upon bullshit, but the NFL has been slowly but effectively building international interest. Whether they will do so to the point where they can land a team abroad, I don't know. But the idea that the English have no interest is belied by ticket sales and ever increasing television coverage.

I know, I know... the facts are annoying when you've got ranting to do...

I was probably the first American football player ever interviewed on English television. Back in the 80's (81? 82?) my high school football team was featured on a TV show called Swap Shop. we played a fake scrimmage and I was interviewed by one of the hosts.

American football has been the "next big thing" in the UK for a long time. It is still little more than a curiosity.

---

From my limited experience, I agree. But, for what it is worth, there is way, way, way more American football on British television now than there was even 10 years ago. It is night-and-day. And there are sold-out NFL games there, on the regular. None of these things were true even in 2000. So, while I have no idea there is anything like the support needed for expansion, etc., clearly things are different than they were in the past.

That said, your experience sounds fantastic!
