My dream is inspired by something Corgan said in the Popcast podcast at "Billy Corgan Unloads After a Lifetime of 'Mocking, Bullying, Laughing'" (NYT)(audio and transcript):
[W]e were told at some point in the early 2000s that those types of songs with those types of themes were no longer relevant, and off they went. That it was too complicated. The Cure had the same problem. I’ve been friends with Robert [Smith] for many years, and we would sit there somewhere in the early 2000s over a Chinese meal and lament, like, what the hell happened? This emotionally resonant music just seems like it’s been shoved aside by sociopathic influencers with kind of one-note music.... When they sold out alternative ethos for pop domination — in essence, celebrating Rihanna as an alternative star and wiping Siouxsie [Sioux] off the map — that to me was the great betrayal of the alternative ethos. So suddenly all the things that make alternative music so beautiful — the messiness, the dissonance, the out-of-tune guitars — it was like, nah, that’s just too messy. We don’t have time for that anymore. I started literally comparing the guitar in interviews to the saxophone....
There they are, Corgan and Smith in a Chinese restaurant, puzzling out what the hell happened. It's the Wally/Andre situation. There was an art form. It was vital and they were in the center of it, and where are they now? What happened?

Was it really?
USAID and the NFL started shoving crap-rap down our throats.
Funny how he thinks out of tune instruments are a feature not a bug.
I think Billy is just upset that Robert Smith has gotten popular again and the youth know him (he is on Olivia Rodrigo's newest album) but not Smashing Pumpkins.
I'm virtually certain that Billy Corgan was the one who shaved his head and that Robert Smith was the one with all that product in his hair and that sitting around complaining about the great betrayal of the alternative ethos would make them both assholes.
Nobody is more important in the history of rock n roll than Billy Corgan. Just ask him.
I liked the Bill Burr - Billy Dorgan clash on the Howie Mandell podcast. It was epic.

Those meals needed David Byrne to make it interesting.
I like the title but featuring Van Morrison and Bob Dylan instead. You could get either two hours of silence or two hours of inspired conversation.
I went too a football game at Georgia Tech yesterday and instead of letting the band and crowd provide the noise they pumped loud rap, electronic dance music, and modern pop (so loud that my watch kept warning me it was too loud). It really distracted from the experience.
Running home from church today, I put on Amazon Music with Laid by James. It was the last song I listened to on the app, days ago - I was in a hurry so just hit Play. After the song concluded, the algorithm served up The Warrior by Patti Smyth and Scandal. Then the Cure's Just Like Heaven. Then I find the Prof fantasizing about Mr Smith!
Perhaps the algorithm knew I had been in church? CC, JSM
I love love love Smashing Pumpkins. Don't care for The Cure much at all.
Corgan's got issues, but he can because (IMO) he's a musical genius and I love listening to his musings.
First they came for the tap dancers.
And I did not speak out.
Because I was not a tap dancer.
Oh no the thing that always happens with popular culture has happened and I don't know why it has happened, this is a tragedy.
One of the things that happened was that people got really tired of Billy Corgan's voice in its snarly raspiness. (He had a totally different voice on songs like 1979).
“The movie I'd like to see is "My Dinner with Robert."
So have A.I. make you one.
Was Wally's and Andre's art form - the theater - dying or dead in the 1980s? Andre speculated that humanity was on the way out and that the 1960s may have been the last burst of human individuality, but his talk was very much about his experiences and experiments in the theater, as if that art were still alive. Two guys talking about the end of their art may be a good podcast, but it wouldn't make a great movie.
