"Attorneys for Christa Pike said Thursday afternoon that she is alive, in critical condition 'and receiving lifesaving medical care' after Tennessee officials tried and failed to execute her by lethal injection the previous night."

WaPo reports.

AND: Here's some speculation about how she survived (and an interesting tip on how a person can prepare in advance to stymie the lethal injection):

Fentanyl and/or carbon monoxide gas could do the needful quickly and totally painlessly. Tanks of CO can be bought at any large welding supply house.

Hell, why not firing squads? I'd rather take five .30-'06 slugs to the heart, and have my lights switched off in less than ten seconds, than endure an hour of being strapped to a gurney while they try to find a vein in my arm. I'd also allow the husband, brother, son, or father of the condemned man's victim to join the firing squad. One of the few things that Muslim countries get correct.

RideSpaceMountain કહ્યું...

Her survival is unfortunate, but the customarily ancient trial-by-ordeal (unofficially the 'hangman's pardon') applies somewhat to what could be argued as cruel and unusual to spike her again.

Original Mike કહ્યું...

Yeah, the thing about her arm hurting is pretty telling, though I'm not buying dehydration. My first question would be about the competence of the person doing the injection.

The forces opposed to capital punishment won this one via the same tactics they always employ: make every step of the process as difficult as possible; in other words, obstruct justice.
This process is not inherently difficult. There are few things humans are more proficient at than killing each other, but when it's justified and the government gets involved, it's suddenly impossible.

bagoh20 કહ્યું...

Opponents of capital punishment would rather have the cruelty of botched executions endured by the murderer and the victims alike than have justice swiftly and humanly delivered, because the latter is easy and straightforward by multiple methods if you want it.

My religion allows people to repent. And for mercy...
I dont think they should get another bite at the apple, trying to kill her again after she's gotten hospital help, and I pray the doctors can keep her alive. It would be convenient for the state if she never makes it out of the hospital and we do have to ask thr Catholics on the Court if it is cruel and inhumane to try and kill her again... they are complicit.

I get the sense she's a medic. In order to hold that separation mindset together, where executing someone does not constitute a violation of their Hippocratic oath, not to cause harm; executions need to be done as humanely as possible.

Pentobarbital is all that they use for lethal injection execution? WTF? Barbiturate overdose kills by means of respiratory depression. You fall asleep, and you stop breathing, and you die. But, as many people just learned yesterday, that is not a sure thing. In this circumstance, the barb should be used just to get them asleep so that you can then give them a lethal Potassium Chloride (KCl) injection. Sheesh, ask your local veterinarian.

Having trouble with an IV? Give them a mask anesthetic and then an intracardiac injection of KCL. This isn't rocket science.

Complex capital punishment procedures are not surviving the competency crisis. The list of seemingly simple things we now fuck up badly grows ever longer.

MrEddy કહ્યું...

I suppose strangling her to death with an exercise cord is a little too cruel and unusual to unalive a non-infant, especially a person who is not completely innocent. As a society we have to have standards.about how murderers are punished.

bagoh20 કહ્યું...

"The execution should be as methodically well executed, as the agonizing decision to put someone to death. "

The belief that that requires complexity is what led to this incompetence. Too many rules about it, including ones designed to make it likely to fail. If you want extra suffering by the murder and the victims, this is how you get it. The only reason for it being so complicated is to thwart justice, when death is the just goal ordered by a court after years of weighing evidence over and over.

The process could be simple and foolproof which is the only just way once the outcome is already ordered and legal. It could be made to require almost no expertise, training, or elusive supplies, and it could be automated so nobody pulls the switch. All the problems could be easily solved if that's what the goal was.

Remember, most Democrats do not oppose capital punishment. They just want different people put to death. Full term babies? Yep. Old people with disabilities? Looking at MAID and Canada. Your kids if you are depressed? Ask all the people supporting Lindsey Clancy. Jews in Isreal? Most of today's Democrat politicians. Jews in America? Hasan Piker says yes and very few Democrats disagree! Political enemies of Democrats like Trump or Republicans in Congress? Absolutely -- polls show over 80% of Democrats want Trump dead. "Smirking while Catholic" boys from Covington Catholic schools. Little kids in Christian schools when violent trannies invade.

All belong dead according to many if not most Democrats.

Who do Democrats NOT support killing? Convicted murderers/rapists/child rapists. Ilegal immigrants who murder people on camera. Muslim terrorists. Anyone who kills a Christian or a Jew.

Yes, Driver's here to express his opposition to the death penalty for murderers and the like. He frequently rails against anyone killing Islamic people murdering Jews (never against the murder of the Jews though!) and he's all aboard the "kill Trump!" train the left is on.

So he's not against the death penalty. He just wants different people put to death than criminals and the like.

This was my Christa Pike commentary in last night's open thread. Reposting it here.

Thoughts on the botched attempted execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee:

1. Did she get her request of an all-female execution team? If so, it kind of reminds me of the much ballyhooed "first all-female spacewalk" where one of the women allowed a tool to drift off into space.

2. Incompetence or possible sabotage? Maybe pentobarbital that had been sitting on the shelf for too long?

3. Does the State of Tennessee get another bite at the apple after Pike's failed execution? And despite the fact that she committed a particularly heinous murder 32 years ago, should they?

4. A religious person might look at the botched execution and think that maybe her survival against the odds was God's will?

Gaza has over 300 miles of tunnels that could be good bomb shelters.... and Hamas refuses to let any civilian use them while they cower in them, letting the civilians die. But given that the vast, vast majority of Palestinians chant death to america and support killing me along with all the Jews in the world, I find it hard to care about what happens to them. Just like I didn't care too much about what happened to the aztecs who spent a great deal of time cutting hearts out of people. God Himself ordered some civilizations erased, and for good reason. Today, Gaza is one of those "civilizations."

There should be a separate class of repugnant crimes. The trials should be swift, the appeals process should be limited, and the sentence should be carried out within the year. I'm pretty sure that would help families and loved ones with their grieving process. And it would make the rest of use feel good about the justice system.........If someone tortured a child I loved to death, I would not want to read about how they found Jesus and, really, have now become a marvellous new person.

Tennessee has now botched two execution attempts in 2026 - first failing to establish the required IV access, then administering two doses of lethal drugs to Pike without killing her. She remained alive and breathing for more than an hour before being taken to a hospital.

Whatever one thinks about the death penalty, repeatedly failing to carry out an execution without causing prolonged suffering is a pretty serious indictment of the state’s competence and procedures.

It’s hard for me to think of a story that more clearly encapsulates the moral rot at the heart of our country than the botched execution of Pike. Seeing so many people cheer as the state kills an American citizen is a grim reminder of how little regard we can have for human life when vengeance takes hold. The desire for retribution can warp our moral consciousness and, in the process, degrade the entire society.

@Indefinitely Extended Excursion, so I shall pointedly ask you the question I have been asking since Althouse introduced Christa Pike as a topic. In your opinion what do we owe the people who were murdered? None of your vague generalities; be specific.

@BM: We owe the people who were murdered justice, remembrance, and a recognition of the terrible wrong done to them. We owe their families compassion and support. But I don’t believe honoring the victims requires the state to kill in their name. Justice and vengeance aren’t necessarily the same thing and my concern is precisely what happens to our moral judgment when we allow vengeance to become the measure of justice.

@Indefinitely Extended Excursion, your comment is exactly the sort of mealy-mouthed crap I told you not to respond wth. We owe them justice but not vengeance? What if whst you call vengeance looks like simple justice to the rest of us? Are you prepared to accept that you might not have a lock on all the world’s knowledge?

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

The best argument against the death penalty that I ever heard is that the government is often wrong and screws up. Which means it's entirely possible that we are killing an innocent man.

That's the pro-life argument. We are not God, we are not infallible, what if we screw up?

I also believe, when Harry Blackmun wrote, "I will no longer tinker with the machinery of death," his subconscious was crying out about his abortion opinions. His conscious mind couldn't hear it, because he was too invested in what he had done. He couldn't acknowledge it, or even think about it, because it would cost him too much to do so.

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

Strap 'em down. Light 'em up.

They did that to one guy, and he caught on fire.

It's similar to why the Supreme Court had to keep revisiting its abortion opinions. They would kick one procedure out the window. Because of all the abortion screw-ups. And they would adopt a new procedure.

At first, they would scald the baby in the uterus. And then in L.A., a baby was born alive, scalded and crying. And the doctor tried to strangle the baby to death. That was a murder charge. Oops.

Then there was that dead baby, found in a hotel room trash can. That was a police investigation. Oops.

So then they went with D&E, where you rip the baby apart and take them out piece by piece, in the abortion clinic.

There was a baby who was born, alive in a hospital, after a botched abortion. She was missing an arm. Usually, the baby died, of course. But sometimes the doctor would not get all the baby tissue in the uterus. (The doctor reassembles the body parts on a tray to make sure nothing was left behind). This was a sloppy way to conduct business. But this is a business that objects to the ultrasound. So women and girls would end up in the ER with baby parts still in their uterus. And the AMA was like, "this is making us look bad."

So that's when they tried killing the baby in the middle of birth.

It was all the ugliness of the actual procedure of homicide that makes people revolted at what you are doing. It's why executioners used to wear masks. So people would smile at them on the street and not associate them with decapitation.

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

It's ironic that all those countries who have abolished the death penalty (most of the world) are now routinely killing innocent unborn children and innocent old people.

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

This would be way more impressive if you were actually pro-life, IIE. You are oblivious to the homicides that you like. You are the pacifist who kills babies in the abortion clinic. On your days off, you go into the hospital and suffocate the old people, with pillows. You hate racism and you refuse to hire white men. You violate every principle you spout, out in the open, while you expect us to listen to you.

Yesterday morning, I did some quick research. Two quick things:

First, apparently, nowadays, it's not uncommon to have death-sentence prisoners on death row for the amount of time this perpetrator has been on death row. This lengthened amount of time has apparently been a trend for quite a while now.

Second, nurses and doctors are not allowed to participate in executions, apparently. In addition, drug companies do not want to sell their products for executions and therefore they won't sell them for this purpose. This can result in difficulties for states to obtain the drugs needed for an effective execution cocktail. They sometimes try to stockpile what they need when they manage to get a source, but this has apparently resulted in expired drugs being used or wanted to be used, which in turn has provoked more litigation.

I couldn't understand myself why there was such a difficulty in executing someone by drugs, because--as others have noted--God knows, people manage to off themselves all the time, on purpose or accidentally, using pharmaceuticals. And hospitals seem to be able to manage to effectively manage administering injections and so forth. The pharmacy issue and the doctor/nurse issue explains some of the difficulties, however frustrating and/or gobsmacking it might be.

rcommal કહ્યું...

Not "pharmacy," but "pharmaceutical.

rcommal કહ્યું...

There's not a trend to just having a single shooter execute a convicted murderer under imposition of the death penalty. This is apparently because they're trying to protect the mental health of the shooter, from what I can gather. From what I read quickly yesterday, in the case of firing squad, typically one of the shooters is randomly given blanks. That way, each shooter can say to himself or herself that he might not actually have killed someone. I gather that this is supposed to provide some psychological space for the shooters, especially if they were to be regularly deployed to participate in executions.

rcommal કહ્યું...

I am not against the death penalty per se. Sometimes it's needed. But there's a "however." We cannot risk putting innocent people to death, and we do need to figure out how to carry out executions in a foolproof fashion. We have amassed too many examples of "fails" on both counts. Let's address and fix that.

Canada’s Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) service has experienced rare instances of failed or severely complicated procedures.
The Bradley Stewart Case (2024): In a highly publicized case reviewed by Ontario’s MAID Death Review Committee, an Ontario man named Bradley Stewart unexpectedly resumed breathing and gained consciousness after initially being pronounced dead by his MAID provider. The physician had failed to administer the full, customary sequence of lethal drugs and had already left the property before the patient woke up groaning. The same provider later failed a second time to complete a procedure on another patient under different circumstances.
Sedative/Anesthetic Failures: In other cases highlighted by medical review boards, the initial heavy sedatives failed to work properly. This left patients conscious or semi-conscious, vocalizing distress or groaning before the final paralyzing agents took effect.
Technical Issues: Difficulty establishing intravenous (IV) access or line failures during the active infusion of the lethal medications have also occurred, requiring emergency interventions by clinicians to complete the procedure. (Google Search AI)

Of course I might be wrong. That’s why I’m making an argument rather than claiming to possess “𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥’𝘴 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦.” But “𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦” doesn’t settle the question. Vengeance and justice have overlapped throughout human history; that doesn’t make them morally identical.

My point is narrower: a person can believe that someone who commits murder deserves the most serious punishment available without believing that the state must deliberately take that person’s life. If you believe execution is justice rather than vengeance, that’s a defensible moral position. But it’s an argument you still have to make -- not something established by calling it “𝘴𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦.”

And the botched execution itself isn’t proof that the death penalty is morally wrong. It does, however, raise a separate and very serious question about whether the state can administer an irreversible punishment competently and humanely.

That’s not a rebuttal; it’s a fan-fiction biography of me followed by an accusation of hypocrisy. If there’s a contradiction in what I’ve actually said, point it out. Otherwise you’re arguing with positions you’ve assigned to me rather than anything I’ve written.

Big Mike કહ્યું...

@Indefinitely Extended Excursion, ain’t no “might” about your being wrong. Nice of you to admit that if I “believe execution is justice rather than vengeance, that’s a defensible moral position.” Tears of joy and gratitude are pouring from my eyes and threaten to short out my iPhone. The justification is simpler: murder is a habit-forming crime, and we kill murders so they won’t do it again.

Indefinitely Extended Excursion™️ કહ્યું...

^^ That’s actually a different argument and a more empirical one. If the justification is incapacitation, then the question becomes whether killing someone is necessary to prevent them from killing again. Life imprisonment can also permanently incapacitate someone without making an irreversible decision to take their life.

And “𝘮𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘵-𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦” isn’t really an argument; it’s a claim about recidivism that requires evidence. If we’re going to justify an irreversible punishment on the grounds that it’s necessary to protect society, “we kill them so they can’t do it again” doesn’t establish that necessity.

Saint Croix કહ્યું...

IIE, if you are pro-life, feel free to say so.

My point is that you are refusing to say anything about abortion. You think you can talk about the death penalty in isolation, and that makes you some sort of nice liberal puppy.
