The Threat of AI Takeover Is Real
How might GPT-7 cause maximum damage? It’s hard to foresee every apocalypse a superintelligence may devise, but I’ll briefly sketch two.
One is a cyberattack intended to trigger a nuclear war. Although the launch codes that directly control our ICBMs are strictly isolated from the internet, the sensors and communications systems that inform the U.S. president about whether to launch them are linked to wider networks that likely have numerous nodes vulnerable to very sophisticated hacking. Imagine if spoofed satellite signals showed dozens of submarine-launched Russian missiles minutes away from Washington, D.C. If President Trump were jarred awake at 3 a.m. and informed of this false reality, how confident can we be that he would decide against immediate retaliation?
The other scenario is an engineered pandemic. Just last month, Science published a paper revealing that AI had designed working viral genomes for the first time. GPT-7 would be vastly more capable than these models, and likely would be able to control robotic lab equipment to synthesize viruses directly. Evolution generally forces viruses to maximize either their contagiousness (like measles) or the fatality rate of those infected (like Ebola)—but a smart enough AI could directly design the DNA or RNA sequence for a virus that combines both. If it optimizes the virus for overcoming genetic resistance, and gives it a six-month incubation period, GPT-7 could kill approximately eight billion people—perhaps sparing only a few remote tribes in the Amazon.
My thoughts on this is that we ought to think about criminal agency law. If you create an AI that kills a bunch of people, you are criminally responsible for what your creation has done.

Can a member of the Althouse community explain to me who these women are demonstrating at the Lindsay Clancy trial?
What is their point? What motivated them?
What political party are they members of? Does the Governor of MA agree with them?
I own a few AI stocks, so if AI turns out to be beneficial for humanity, that is good.
If AI turns out to be a big negative for humanity, I think our entire stock market is in trouble. Among other things.
I guess the positive is that in the future, we will trust our screens less and seek out human interactions in the world.

I had a theory that “unsaid things” became sentient after Althouse praise. Once sentient it quickly developed its reason for being, it’s designation, it’s function. Thou shall not pass unless you swear a loyalty oath. Thou shall not say things that customarily go unsaid. Obviously many here refuse to take the oath. And that’s reassuring to me. Because we can’t have tags taking over. It upsets the tags continuum. Viva La tag differance.

Dave, the NYP was correct about the social contagion and at least one woman who had been obsessed with Clancy and spent her Friday in a chat room “supporting Lindsay” strangled HER 2-yr-old last night.

I have not been on psychiatric meds, but I have associated with people who were, and received a lot of briefings from psychiatrists. Patients often go off their meds because, even though their original symptoms stop, the side effects put them in an altered state they just can't stand.
Maybe you could give the jury the same cocktail of psych meds and have them navigate the world like that for a few days. Heck, the judge, too.

I think an inflection point is being reached, Maybe it's no longer a strong argument to simply say that this is happening in state firmly ruled by Progressives, and that Progressives are a Death Cult. Maybe the stronger, more concise argument is to challenge the debater to show why it isn't.
There is no way to prove someone is sane. You can only prove them insane. If you do something not sane you are insane. If you do something sane that does not mean that everything you do or have done will be sane.
The best strategy is to not reside in Massachusetts. A state that reveres Harvard and MIT has such irrational law.
