Flock cameras are suddenly appearing everywhere I drive. Today, I've spotted 4 of them, all brand-new installations. I'm glad Florida's governor has decided they're a bad idea, and think this state should do the same. Bad Idea. Too much of a temptation for the wrong people.

Took my first Waymo ride today.
Their app needs help. Pickup and drop-off both showed the wrong address, but if you zoomed in on the map you could tap the pin at your actual spot. Wait times were under 10 minutes.
On the way back we got their newer van that’s still being fine-tuned. It raced to catch the green arrow for a left turn, then took the turn at top speed and hurled us into the side of the van. Those seatbelts are really there to protect you from the inside of the car. Reminded me of my dad’s driving. The only thing missing was my mom yelling “slow down.”
They’re aiming for a human ride, and they nailed that one.
Still, very impressive. More enjoyable than Uber or Lyft. Looking forward to the next ride.

Good for you E. M. It's for the best that we have less human drivers on the roads. I'm talking about mitigating the number one cause of accidents on the roads; 'human error'... as HAL would say.

Not only did the orange disk not pop, but there’s no orange popping in the trees, either. Usually here is SE Wisconsin, a few of the sugar maples are turning orange by late August, and by the autumnal equinox, many of them are. But this year I’ve yet to see a single one.

The traditional, now former kings of media, demand a place in the Whitehouse. They can’t explain what critical irreplaceable function they play in society, sole role different than hordes of other people. They have cameras. Other people have cameras. They have a network. The internet is the world’s network. They have experts. Lots of experts available all around. They have opinions. Lots of people have opinions. They have arrogant famous people. No shortage of those - they’re a dime a dozen. .

What exactly does CNN do that a Whitehouse or any other societal organization needs and can’t do themselves? CNN is almost as useless as a political debate moderator.

If capitalism is such a beautifully decentralized system that works regardless of whether politicians understand it, why does it so quickly give way to government intervention when the market produces politically inconvenient prices?

Now we have Republicans calling for a diesel export ban because fuel prices are hurting voters - despite analysts warning that restricting exports could actually make prices worse. And the administration is pursuing cheaper potash from Belarus while squeezing Canada, America’s dominant potash supplier.

Markets are powerful allocation mechanisms. But they don’t operate in a vacuum. War, sanctions, tariffs, subsidies, regulations and political decisions profoundly shape the “decentralized” system. That’s a rather less romantic version of the invisible hand.

So, we decided to do this approach because we really like her pictures and want to encourage her.

And while Althouse can spend or invest this fabulous sum of money any way she desires, it would be great if she held a giant party for the Althouse community with a secret special musical performance.”

I'm reading Gotham A History of NYC by Edwin Burrows. Here's an interesting and instructive anecdote from that history. Around 1800 there were a series of yellow fever outbreaks that reached near plague proportions. One year, five percent of the population died. The epidemic got politicized. The Federalists (the conservatives of that era) though that the epidemic was caused by all those damned immiigrants. The Democrats thought that the plague was caused by the ineptitude do the Federalist management of the city. They believed that the Federalists should work to remove the miasmas that were part of the city.........In fact yellow fever was caused by a mosquito. I suppose they were both right. The mosquitos came from the West Indies. There breeding ground was in the miasmas, ie the swamp lands and stagnant water pools in NYC.......Everyone staked out their position vehemently. I guess the Dems had the better argument in that after they drained the swampy Fresh Water Pond, there was a decrease in yellow fever cases.......It's perhaps just as well to also consider that yellow fever was only finally eradicated after funding by the Rockefeller Institute discovered a vaccine for it.

In 2023 Karine Jean-Pierre revoked African journalist Simon Ateba’s press pass because she considered his questions “disruptive.”

After suing he was told he could stand in the back of the briefing room, and was never called on despite being the only African journalist.

None of these legacy propaganda outlets put out a statement in support of his first amendment rights or boycotted Biden in solidarity.

Missouri already held its primaries using the 2025 Congressional map.

The new map is expected to give Republicans another seat in Missouri by splitting Democrat Emanuel Clever’s 5th Congressional District located in Kansas City.

A federal judge restored the 2025 Congressional map a few hours after the Supreme Court rejected a bid to block the Missouri Supreme Court’s decision to throw it out in another lawsuit.

The Eighth Circuit refused to issue a stay, so the defendants rushed to SCOTUS.
SCOTUS paused the federal judge’s decision, restoring the 2022 map for the midterms.
Key word: pause. SCOTUS did not reject the case. A stay meant that the lawsuit could proceed in the appeals court.

You have that backwards, Markets become skewed because third parties intervene. Free markets always work.
