I'm speculating that the secretary was likely referring to not the actual button, as opposed to key, but the automatic cutting of the engine at stoplights, etc. (Otherwise, it does some seem to be a "petty" pet peeve, but who cares anyway? We all have them, don't we?)

Anyway, it got me curious, and now I'm back to "everything old is new again" (though with a twist). I started looking into it, admittedly via AI, and the first pushbutton, dashboard starter was in the 1912 Chrysler Model 39, to replace the crank, which could be dangerous.

The "key ignition" was introduced in 1949. Prior to that, many cars used a key to engage the electrical system, but actual starting involved stamping on a floor button to crank the engine. (And before that there were actual cranks, of course.)

So, I'm left wondering: What would Secretary Duffy's great-grandfather (great-great grandfather?; I don't know how old Secretary Duffy is, off hand) think of this new innovation?
