Francesca Hong has a way of breaking into a question sideways and taking you on a journey that may make you forget what the question was in the first place.

Here she is answering the question from Kaitlan Collins: "Do you still believe that Thanksgiving should be canceled?"

Like Trump — who has his own circuitous way of talking, his "weave" — Francesca Hong has her special way of making the conversation her own:

"I'm a chef, and one of the first meals that I made was for the community when I was 16 was a Thanksgiving meal. But Thanksgiving is also a time that's incredibly painful for many people in our communities. And so I think there" — when she said Thanksgiving should be canceled — "I wanted to make sure that people understood that there are multiple views, but views can evolve. And the position that I'm running for right now, and I think my background as a chef will actually help me become a better governor that's able to bring more people to the table."

Brilliant!

A chef... bringing people to the table. I know, you're afraid of her and of the people who are going to vote for her. But if you could stand back coolly and observe, I think you should admit that this — along with Trump's weave — is beautiful American political rhetoric.

It's hard not to like Thanksgiving -- there are no obligations, no religious undertones and no gift giving. This is not a winning issue for Ms. Hong. And, of course, the vast majority of Native Americans celebrate Thanksgiving the same way all other Americans do, by eating a lot of food and watching football. Why are we pretending that this is not the case?

Either both are word salads or neither is... or all that rhetoric around "word salads" is just another way of saying hooray for my side.

Big Mike చెప్పారు...

Afraid? What made you pick THAT word, Professor? Does she ever explain WHY Thanksgiving is “incredibly painful for many people in our communities”? Which people? Why is it painful? Does she explain. Why not?

Go ahead and vote for her, Althouse. You know you’re just dying to. Just don’t expect respect.

Ann Althouse చెప్పారు...

It is evasive, but it's eloquently evasive. To say "word salad" is to say the words are randomly tossed together. That is clearly not the case. If you care about people making sense, pay attention to the sense you yourself are not making.

Bob Boyd చెప్పారు...

She wants to bring more people to the table. She wants to serve man.

@Spiros, right o ! She’s against Thanksgiving because she hates the Green Bay Packers.

I’ll admit it’s better than her usual “I’m evolving from the position I took 5 minutes ago” response.

rcommal చెప్పారు...

Being a chef qualifies one for a great vernorship? Well, maybe, I suppose. It depends on what you cook up.

She does appear quite calm, to me, not anxious. But who knows what’s bubbling up? She could be just simmering, beneath the surface.

Wilbur చెప్పారు...

Gotta go with Pat Henry here. Those last two sentences are little better than jibberish.

Who is "the community" for whom she cooked this dinner?

"Thanksgiving is also a time that's incredibly painful for many people in our communities." Who are these many people and why are the credubly pained at Thanksgiving?

She knew she's going to face questions on this and prepared this ridiculous answer for deflection purposes. She never answers the direct question whether she still thinks Thanksgiving should be cancelled.

Spiros చెప్పారు...

Hong blaming White Europeans for disease transmission among Native Americans is disgusting. Xenophobia and prejudice are always behind these stories about who is responsible for the spread of disease. Usually it's the Jews (or the Irish) but now, according to Ms. Hong, it's ALL White people. Thank you for educating us about White people's poor “lifestyle choices," our lack of cleanliness and, maybe, how a just and righteous God hates us and wants to kill us with super diseases.

She's an awful, crazy woman. And instead of listening to her racist garbage we should blame Ms. Hong's ancestors for the spread of infectious diseases from Asia to Europe? We should do so in hysterical and crazy ways. Just cry and scream all day about how the bubonic plague, influenza of various types and similar infectious diseases from Asia's filthy mega cities killed hundreds of millions of Europeans.

There are any number of things that you can stand back coolly and observe that are tragic for those involved, like a house on fire. Lawnerd చెప్పారు...

I am sick of progressives sharing their true thoughts then later saying that their thinking has evolved. Bullshit! Kamala did it now this one is doing it. I just wish Madison and Milwaukee would leave the rest of Wisconsin alone.

I will not stand back, nor coolly observe. Her rhetoric masks her true ambition: to seize the traditional narrative, to choke it until it stops moving, and replace history with propaganda. It's not beautiful; it's terrible, in every sense of the word.

Word salad is to disguise that you have no idea what you are talking about. There is no coherence or actual point being made.

Stream of consciousness is due to your brain working overtime and being flooded with thoughts so fast they come out unorganized and out of sequence. Eventually to be coalesced into coherence.

If Thanksgiving was replaced, I think the new holiday would be a time that's incredibly painful for many people in our communities. What would Hong do about that? Cancel it?

The idea of creating a sovereign wealth fund similar to Alaska’s as a method of funding universal base income or universal high income didn’t originate with Trump. Major players in the AI industry, like Andreessen, Diamandis, Musk, etc., originated the idea. You are wrong on the most basic level. This is not an idea being forced on private companies. The idea came directly from venture capitalists and high level tech execs.

Cool. What do you think about it? What do you think Elizabeth Warren will do with the "sovereign wealth fund."

Hong wants to eliminate Milwaukee's very successful school voucher program which has helped poorer inner city kids escape the failing Milwaukee Public School System. The program started in 1990. In 1998 the WI Supreme Court ruled the vouchers could be used for religious schools. Today, 30,000 kids from Milwaukee take advantage of this program. IT WORKS.

If you live on the West side of Milwaukee, you can get a voucher and pay for tuition at St. Agnes Catholic School just on the "safe side" of 124th Street. It's an amazing school and a huge upgrade from MPS, and it's only a few miles from your house in a safe neighborhood.

The lower grades are well populated, and of course thins out after you get above grade 4. However, for the kids there, the student to teacher ratio is incredible. Some classes 10 kids to 1 full time teacher.

I dated the music teacher there for a bit. Went to the fall and spring music concerts she led. The vast majority of students were African-American or Hispanic-America coming from Milwaukee.

Francesca Hong and her communist Teachers Union supporters want to take the voucher program away from these families and kids, and trap them in MPS, and Milwaukee's perpetual poverty.

That's how you make poor people forever dependent on the socialist state. Evil really.

But, at least she's a chef!!

Some of our commenters need to watch the All-In Podcast and Moonshots. The assumption behind a sovereign wealth fund is that working for a living will become optional in the next 3-5 years as AI/robotics makes goods and services close to free. So, we become capable of producing everything in abundance, but we then have no method of distributing goods and services. A fundamental change in economic systems. What’s being suggested isn’t communism. It’s providing displaced workers with income so that they can purchase the tsunami of goods and services that AI/robotics is already beginning to produce.

No way it's that fast. Many things are already produced by robotics, but mostly in large, high-volume production. The vast majority of people work in "small" businesses that produce things in low volume. Eventually, robotics will be easier and cheaper to implement, but right now it's not practical for anything but highly repetitive tasks. We'll get there, but not that quick.

Hong likes to compare herself with Milwaukee's socialist mayors. The most famous being Dan Hoan who was mayor from 1916-1940. But she is and the Mandami led Democrat Socialists are NOTHING like them.

During the Great Depression, Dan Hoan was on the cover of Time Magazine, because Milwaukee actually had a balanced budget. Bills were paid. Infrastructure was built. Milwaukee was a dirty city run by the steel, tanning, and beer barons. The socialists built roads, implemented public health standards and made other necessary improvements.

Much like Teddy Roosevelt and Huey Long in Louisiana. When Huey Long took office in 1928 there were 300 miles of paved roads in Louisiana. When he left in 1932 there was 2300 miles.

Government has its place in regulating industry and building infrastructure. But Hong and her supporters want to bring back the unnecessary high speed rail debate between Milwaukee and Madison. (It's only and easy hour and twenty minute drive). It would break the bank.

Hong won't build a damn thing. Lucky for her, the general liberal voting population is historically ignorant and know nothing about some of the successful "socialist" leaders of the past.

But they are not the same. Not even close. Hong is probably too stupid to understand this.

White people are naturally lower in cholesterol and can be barbecued, roasted, or boiled. Any way you serve them, they make a tasty meal. Remember Al Capp's Shmoo. “I do hope the commies that get elected crash and burn quickly so we can end this experiment.”
Except they don’t.
I keep hoping the progressive experiments fail quickly enough that voters course-correct, but that’s not how it works in practice. Look at California - a genuinely magnificent state with every natural advantage, and Democrat rule has made housing unaffordable, homelessness a crisis, and the middle class an export. Once the Democrats entrench themselves protecting the machine is the priority and the state keeps sliding. In comes no ID voting, mail in voting, vote counting that continues until the Democrat candidate wins, etc. and the graft continues ad infinitum.
