Civility bullshit?

From Peter Baker, in the NYT: "Insults, Expletives and Fat-Shaming: Vance Trolls Critics on the Right and Left/The vice president has dispensed with the decorum and restraint of his predecessors to directly take on opponents and journalists on social media with sometimes profane and often personal jabs" (gift link).

It's only "civility bullshit" — for the purposes of my blog tag — if the person calling out incivility would take a different position if the purported incivility were coming from someone on his own side.

I like the inclusion of Vance's self-defense: "I tend to err on the side of openness. That’s probably a generational thing, right? I come from a very tech-forward generation." That is, if you don't get me, maybe that means you're old. And: "I think one of the good things about social media is that it actually exposes you to unfiltered raw opinions, and that’s one of the things that I need to hear as a political leader."

And I had to laugh at this quote from a law professor: "Vice President Vance’s willingness publicly to disparage others in personal terms stands apart from the behavior of modern vice presidents during the last half-century.... [I]t departs from the norms associated with the office and undermines the goal of promoting rational public discourse."

Notice the lawprof specified "modern vice presidents." Is that designed to keep us from looking for nasty quips in the complete quotations of John Adams and Aaron Burr?

Has anybody every paid as much attention to any VP, while they were VP, in the last half century with the possible exception of Dick Cheney (also a Republican, I might add).

Kamala Harris (D)
Mike Pence (R)
Joe Biden (D)
Dick Cheney (R)

Yes, JD should embrace his Appalachian heritage and start challenging his detractors to duels. Hains Point at dawn!

And he could further emulate Burr by conquering his own little country somewhere. What better training to be POTUS?

He could show up for a debate with a bullet hole in his frock coat and a pocket full of death warrants from his banana republic. His interlocutors would say nothing but “I agree wholeheartedly with Vice President/Caudillo Vance.” CC, JSM

Peter baker pushed the lies and falsehoods of the Russiagate story for years. He's also lied and attacked Trump on a daily basis. Now, he's going after Vance.

I guess that means Vance is better than I thought.

And please can we stop bringing up Adams and Jefferson. I cant think of any modern VP in the last 160 years that slung mud like that. At some point you have to stop pointing to things 200 years ago, and saying "Well, is not outside the norm, why in 1806 Adams Called Jefferson a "Negro Lover and burr was shot in a duel".

"Is that designed to keep us from looking for nasty quips in the complete quotations of John Adams and Aaron Burr?"

It's also intended to keep us from reading the remarks of Vice-President Joseph Robinette Biden, particularly those directed to girls under the age of consent. The most reliable Democratic voters can't read English or speak it intelligibly; therefore, they have no idea he held any elective office before he became the fraudulent 46th President of the United States. In fact, a sizable minority of reliable Democratic voters can't name any vice-president, current or past.

From the beginning, Trump attacked the Fake News. I saw it at every rally I attended and it was probably about six. That was his brand.

The Fake News definitely needs to be attacked. Jake Trapper is a perfect example. He’s a Dem partisan. He pushed the Russia hoax for years. Totally wrong about Covid. How much did that mistake cost the US? We can’t even measure the number. And he covered for Biden’s senility.

I had coffee today with my Jesuit high school class. In my little conversation today was a former state senator, two Ivy Leagurers and a big time business owner. They all disliked Trump’s rude manner. I, of course, disagreed. I say fuck that! Push back against these lying Deep Staters.

Once the campaign starts in earnest people will go over Vance's social media accounts just as they are going over Graham Platner's, Francesca Hong's and Adbul El-Sayed's now. Will they find anything as surprising or shocking or damning? Probably not. Whatever contrast Baker is contriving to establish between Vance and other vice presidents, his tweets and posts are probably less offensive than the average commenter's political posts. Until the race heats up, is anybody really paying attention to Vance's tweets?

The thing that pisses me off about the NYT, CNN and the rest of them is that they hold themselves out to the world as being reasonable and objective reporters of facts when they are no such thing.

One of the first marvels of the computer was the insult generator.

"1983 (The MS-DOS Era): One of the earliest known standalone computer insult programs was an MS-DOS program called "Insults", released by the Modern Advisory Institute out of Utah. It laid the foundation for algorithmic, randomized string-combining text burns on personal computers.

Late 1980s (The Mainframe Era): Programmer Ron Hardin built an insult generator utilizing text-processing scripts on the Cray supercomputer at Bell Labs.

1998 (The Web Era): Software engineer JJ Berry created AutoInsult v1. It digitized the popular 3-column "Shakespearean Insult Kit" into a Windows application before expanding into modern, automated web formats.

Its shows (and there are many examples) of what a cuck Nixon was. He didn't want to attack the press, so he gave that to Agnew. It wasn't until Dan Rather was mocking and sneering at him at press conferences that Nixon finally fired back.

Of course in PRIVATE Nixon was full of contempt for the press. And people will say "What about his press conference in 62?" Well go look at it. All Nixon does is whine about unfairly he was treated, and and pathetically declaim: "You wont have Nixon to kick around anymore".

RCOCEAN II ayon kay ...

Its amazing how often this trick has been played. Some Republican is slightly to the right. The Leftwing MSM goes batshit crazy and starts calling him "New Hitler". We on the Right rally to his defense. Then we find out that "Our guy" the "True Conservative" is in fact is just a moderate Republican that's 10 percent more conservative than the typical DC "Reasonable Republican". And that he just wishes the press had liked him more!

Some "law professors" never studied history. V.P. Cheney shot a hunting companion. Richard Nixon --VP under IK cursed like a trooper in private. LBJ--VP under JFK would talk with reporters and cabinet members while sitting on the toilet. Truman--VP under FDR threatened a reporter who had criticized his daughter's musical performance, saying, "If I meet him, he's going to need a steak for his eye and a supporter below." Joe Biden--ah the field of Joe's invective or senile babbling is too big to describe. Maybe he can "put that law professor back in chains".

loudogblog ayon kay ...

"Vice President Vance’s willingness publicly to disparage others in personal terms stands apart from the behavior of modern vice presidents during the last half-century."

That is totally backwards of what the traditional role of the Vice President has been in American history. Until Trump came alone, the Vice President was seen as the attack dog for the President. The Vice President would attack the other side while the President could keep his image of being a "nice guy" intact. Trump and Pence's personalities flipped that relationship upside down.
