There is also the literal version of that song, a wonderful examination of the absurdities of 1980s music video:

Total eclipse.
Bonnie Tyler has died: "Bonnie Tyler obituary: gravel-voiced singer of Total Eclipse of the Heart/The most successful Welsh female singer since Shirley Bassey did not have her first hit until 25, but went on to sell 100 million records" (London Times).

"Turn around, Bright Eyes"--and RIP.
She needed a hero.
Her first big hit was "It's a Heartache," which was in 1978, but as the professor rightly notes, Bonnie was pure 80s. Her music was the exemplar of the aphorism "so bad it's good." RIP.
I love the literal version and haven't watched it in years! Thanks for the memories!
If Total Eclipse of the Heart sounds like the type of song Meatloaf might sing, it's because it was written by Jim Steinman, who wrote the Bat Out of Hell album and other Meatloaf records.
RIP Bonnie. Shirley Bassey lives on, at 89.
Tom Jones is the most successful Welsh male singer. Just saying.
Totally agree with Jamie about the literal version. For a stretch a few years ago, it seemed impossible to find and I gave up on re-enjoying it. I always thought it was brilliant and a hoot. Thanks Althouse for including it.
On “It’s a Heartache” she sounds like a female version of Rod Stewart.
Thanks for the literal version. That's the first thing that came to mind when I saw the "Total Eclipse" posted.
When the literal version came out, other content creators tried literal versions of other songs, but none were as clever as this one. "Mullet with headlights".
One good thing about having had only one hit or a handful of hits is that people will remember you as you were back then, so for me she was always in her thirties with wild Eighties hair. If you want to disappear it helps to be from another country. I didn't know she was Welsh and appeared in Eurovision contests after her glory days. I assumed she was from Mississippi or the Carolinas or something.

Meh. She wished. Closer to Bette Davis.

The literal videos of Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels” and Air Supply’s “Making Love out of Nothing at All” are pretty good.
