I suppose about a month ago, my wife and I watched "The Story of Theodore Roosevelt" on PBS. It was a rare show that we both enjoyed. I thought it was pretty good and moved along at a nice pace - and neither of us knew that much about him. Of course it was done for (and by PBS) . . . so who knows? But, I thought it was worth the hour and a half.
Hegseth would never have passed T.R.’s IQ test though.
A relation of mine who was in the Navy caused TR to lose an eye in that fight club....
As to TR's IQ test, Hegseth's Princeton undergraduate and Harvard graduate degrees say otherwise, Jaq.

They (PBS) actually did a good one on Hemingway a couple years ago. Highly recommend.

The Edmund Morris bio is well worth reading. The first volume reads, in parts, like an adventure novel. I think Andrew Jackson might be more bad-ass than TR though. George Washington, however, so far exceeded them both in cunning and raw physical strength that he never had to project a bad ass image.

For a great part of his life, TR sought adventure. Did y'all know that post-Presidency, in February 1914, he explored a little-known Brazilian river called "Rio da Dúvida" (the River of Doubt)?

"Fight club" is today's theme (assuming Ben Shapiro's tough guy review makes him a bad@ss).
Richard Hofstadter liked to imply that weak, asthmatic TR was (over)compensating for something. Gore Vidal made the same argument in a more insinuating and bitchier way.
What about his scientific expedition in the Amazon around 1913-14 that the 2005 book River of Doubt detailed?

TR was a very mixed bag. A lot of filipinos think TR was a bad ass, not in a good way.
TR Jr was a true badass.

Its sad for the USA that we had a Roosevelt in the white house in January 1941 - and he wasnt TR junior.
As for TR, he had his flaws but he was honest straightforward and courageous. Had a TR like politician been in the Senate on J6, he would've gone out and calmed the crowd down. Instead, we had a bunch of Mitt Romney's, who peed their pants, hid in the basement, and screeched "We'll all be killed!"
Trump is also courageous. Who can forget his reaction to being shot? Its up there with Reagan joking as he got rolled into sugery with a bullet in him: "I hope you're all republicans".
A contrast. TR wanted us to get into WW 1, and when he got his wish, be begged Wilson to go and fight even though he was almost 60 and knew he'd probably die.
FDR also wanted us to get into WW 1. But he stayed home and pushed paper in DC. No fighting for him! But then FDR wasnt a hunter or boxer. He played Golf and liked sailing.
But...Pete Buttigieg.
TR was also a respected bird watcher. Writing at his Pine Knot retreat in May 1907, he noted in his journal sighting a small flock of passenger pigeons, the first he had seen in many years. That documentation may be one of the last reputable recorded passenger pigeon sightings recorded before they went entirely extinct. He was not only a man of action, he was a man of intellect.
