U.S. and Iran Trade New Rounds of Attacks in Fight Over Strait of Hormuz ~ WSJ

Passage through Hormuz can't be a serious problem. Remember JD Vance told us in June the U.S. "has all the cards."

Point of clarification. My birthday was a couple days ago, but sons and their families came in for the celebration starting late Friday. All four grandkids were here yesterday and overnight — the oldest is 4 years and a month, and the youngest is 2 years and 3 months, so they’re mostly able to play together.. Since we have toys in the basement from when their daddies were little, the kids never run out of things to play with — (and mischief to get into). I was born to be a grandfather, and I’m loving it.

It shows what contempt McConnell and his wife had for the voters in Kentucky. Nothing but radio silence for 3 weeks, and then when the Kentucky Governor writes an offical letter asking McConnell to tell us what's going on, he waits another couple days before replying.

Back in November of last year, my father developed blood clots from a car trip from Tampa to Georgia. We were lucky that the clots didn’t travel up beyond his lower midsection of his body. He was in a lot of pain and discomfort. He couldn’t even talk. Anything he did caused agonizing pain. We drove him to the hospital and they admitted him right away. Several nurses then doctors came in asking questions until they determined to do test that would definitely show what was the cause of the pain. Doctors told us ‘no more long car trips for him’. ** Lindsey Graham has faced persistent, unproven rumors and colleagues' jokes about his drinking habits over the years, though he has never publicly admitted to having a drinking problem. The speculation largely stems from:Colleagues' Comments: In a 2026 book, Senator John Kennedy wrote that Graham has a "penchant for alcoholic beverages" and is a "hard-drinking wild card," though some observers interpreted the remarks as a joke.Public Appearances: Graham has occasionally faced online speculation and viral rumors about intoxication during interviews or press conferences due to slurred speech or unusual mannerisms.Quips About Alcohol: Graham himself has frequently joked about drinking, such as in 2015 when he stated that he enjoys a drink so much, he thinks drinking more could solve the problems in Washington, and that politicians should drink together to reach bipartisan agreements.**

These people are ridiculous.
They have lost all tethers to a sense of self. Their entire identity now relies on this treasonous hate of America. They make up fantasies of how horrible America never was to justify their need to "fight tyranny." They have no identity but this. And they cling to it with a death grip, because they have nothing else.
None of it is true. Not the fantasy about America about which she is shrieking, not her identity of believing herself to be some "hero" in a movie about an oppressive government, and not the resulting congress-free, senate-free, President-free, childish (and completely chaotic) future she sees for this country.
She is an infant.
She and others like her will not get their way. Not even close. If you have a modicum of common sense, it's time to let your line in the sand about tolerance be made known.
Myself, I have a limit to tolerance.
I have a limit to patience.
I know there is a limit to free speech.
If your plan is to tear down the United States of America, if your plan is treason, I will not tolerate you, I will have zero patience for you, and I will not defend your right to free speech.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear about Sam Neill. He's done some great work over time. He was fun in the Jurassic Park franchise, and I really enjoyed him in Netflix's Peaky Blinders (I recommend that series, btw). One of the reports I read noted that he had decided to go by "Sam" because there had been too many Nigels in his classes at school. I don't know why, but that amused me and I loved that tidbit. Anyway, RIP, Sam Neill. Thanks for the enjoyment!

[start virtual italics]Trump says that states need to raise taxes and pay for *Medicare* and Medicaid because we need the money to. fight Israel's wars. [end virtual italics].

I haven't seen this yet, and I will go look for the exact quote and context. So, caveat... . That established, what I will say at this point is that Medicare is a federal program into which we as taxpayers have contributed . I get that it's a pay-as-you go system (as opposed to an investment,/true trust fund system). But that's still the case. It seem to me suddenly transferring the system to the states will be...tricky, don't you think? Again, I haven't looked into this, so I can't make a more informed comment/analysis. But that's my gut.

I'm more touchy about Social Security. Again, I understand that it's a pay--as-you-go, etc. etc. etc., and I recognize that there's going to be a need to make adjustments just a handful of years. However, it can be galling--to everyone, of course. However, if you're someone like me who, along with my husband, were self employed for the overwhelming majority of our work life, we were paying both sides of Social Security, etc. etc. There was no "employer contribution"; we had to fund that other half ourselves. I can confidently say--due to the success of our pretty much entirely self-funded retirement accounts--that we personally would have done far better had we invested that money ourselves.

I don't honestly think that would necessarily be the case for your average SS recipient, because it does require foresight, a certain level of financial discipline, and a lot of delayed gratification. No offense, but all of those things aren't necessarily distributed throughout our population. I offer as evidence the mean (also mode and median) retirement savings that average Americans (including older one) possess.

Again, tricky.

Regards,

Lori (reader_iam)

rcommal કહ્યું...

One really gets an appreciation of the SS system when one writes checks for decades for both sides of the required SS contributions. As opposed to just have one side of the equation just getting deducted from one's paychecks. It makes it very real and very concrete.

I also wonder about the impact on certain individual states with a large percentage of seniors, including those who retire to states in which they did not spend most of their lives. I'm specifically thinking of Florida, for example, where I currently live. I would think it would be quite the lift if Florida suddenly became responsible for Medicare for all of the seniors living here. How would that work? Again, because I haven't researched, I can't claim to know nor offer a solution. But "tricky" is probably an understated word choice.

The Gulf and Strait conflict(s) pertain to ancienct regional rivalries between the Persians (Iran), the Arabs (other), and regional tribes. The commercialization of oil and external Great Powers proxy funding masks over the history.

Still, the Strait will always be a point of contention, be it simple piracy, commercial shipping, fishing, or a new tin-hat warlord seeking to rule them all.

The current conflict follows the dynamic introduced with Jimmy Carter, plus a long pregnant pause. Don't be shocked when this conflict returns decade after decade.

Did you know that we used 9-11 to justify seven wars that we and Israel wanted to fight anyway, and the last one, Syria, we put an al Qaeda terrorist in charge of the whole country, and Trump sprayed perfume on him at the White House.

If you think that the United States must dominate the entire globe, and to accomplish it by spending, what is Trump asking for now? That's right, $2 trillion, doubling our defense budget, then I guess that you are OK with bankrupting Medicare for the purpose, or we could live peacefully with Iran, whose "acts of terror" have been against US military interventions on the other side of the world from us that we did for Israel, and have been aimed at military targets, BTW.

Being a veteran is certainly no guarantee of virtue: Graham Platner, Lee Harvey Oswald, Timothy McVeigh, . . . And of course we only have Achilles' word for it that he is a veteran: nobody knows whether you're really a dog on the Internet.

I've asked before why so many assholes use "cunt" as an insult, and never received a reply, so I'll ask again. It's a necessary organ, without which none of us would exist. And it's an organ from which the vast majority of us derive great pleasure, either from someone else's (straight men), from one's own (straight women), or both (gay women). The only people who really loathe and fear it are the small percentage of gay men who are intense misogynists. Is Howard one of them? Not that there's anything wrong with him being gay, if he is, but there's a great deal wrong with intense misogyny.
