We left Montreal today - off to Quebec City for a few days, then we'll split up for a bit to check in with California family, Pennsylvania friends, and our youngest, about to start his first post-college job in Austin. Our supposedly dying dog is still with us, still walking a brisk hour a day and eating everything in sight, though her lymph nodes are beginning to be palpable again and her urine might as well be water for how dilute it is - her steroid remission may be drawing to a close. The knee replacement weight I gained and then lost some of is back with me thanks to the many microbrasseries and cidreries we've been fortunate to find - had enough of poutine quite a few weeks ago, so the culprit is definitely the alcohol. We have three new sets of contacts in our phones from the wonderful conversations we've struck up in these places, though, so maybe the temporary (I hope) weight gain has been worth it.

And, in the town where we're staying right now: "The Jerusalem Cyclorama is the largest panorama in America and the only Canadian example of a circular historical panorama mounted on stilts." So we have that to look forward to!

Retirement travel is a mixed bag at present.

Watching the Josh Turek and Barack Obama ad on TV was so refreshing after the chaotic war, debt, affordability issues and inept people in charge of what th epicture looks like now with a guy in charge ata 32% approval rating and even white males (first time since NERO was King) are underwater on support for the old orange guy who is stuck in a neocon war He cant find his way out of after starting it with no clue. Its like stepping into another world Yup its not all drudge and hate and name calling and the pied piper syndrome everywhere, you can tend to forget that. Golden arches, refecting pool, the ballroom,,Kennedy center, and in mean time clusterf&^k elsewhere. These are the upcoming WIN bets to place,,1) comey case throw out, total horse crap,,,2) PIRRO case thrown out,,(fake pool story) Pirro should be sanctioned she is an incredible loser with a record to show that) ,trump always lies and his is immune from all so that don't count 3) Jack Smith just a plan wiin, like ABBREGO GARCIA AND THAT clusterf&%k that had to be dismissed for vindictive trying,, ah yes Barack and the special olympics wheelchair basketball star,,,how refreshing..flush the rest...

I watched a wonderful movie that I'm sure some here would enjoy if they liked the Maurice Chevalier movies that Althouse recommended some months ago.
Title is Waltzes From Vienna aka Strauss's Great Waltz, a 1934 comic-opera directed by Alfred Hitchcock. It's so funny, clever, charming, and lovely to look at and the characteristic Hitchcock style and direction is evident, except it's employed in comic service instead of a thriller.
The subject is young Richard Strauss junior, Schanni, and his struggle to create his music against the wishes and criticisms of his father, the eminent Viennese composer. There is a romantic subplot involving Schanni and his girl, a baker's daughter, and an elegant and beautiful countess who supports Schanni and schemes to help him and help herself in the bargain.
The dialogue is worthy of an Oscar Wilde play, the sets and costumes are marvelous, and of course the music and soundtrack are great. The direction and camera work is so inspired, amusing, and original it could only be Alfred Hitchcock.
Charming and delightful, just an enjoyable movie. They don't make them like that anymore.
PS, I watched the colorized version because the occasional glitches and patches of green and blue don't bother me, and the sets and costumes are so enhanced by the color, and I'm someone who is a great fan of black and white films.
Highly recommend this old movie for sweet and elegant entertainment to watch with a spouse, paramour or older children.

US borrowing costs hit 19-year high as Fed defies inflation fears ~ FT

The Fed under its new chairman Kevin Warsh kept short-term politics steady while giving up control of long-term interest rates to the market. Probably is not going to work out.

Powell, in the background just letting Warsh get more rope

Bureau of Economic Analysis is altering how it measures several components of a price gauge watched by Fed ~ WSJ
"A statistical revamp Is about to lower inflation, at a critical time"

This is an attempt to tell people that inflation is not increasing. Housing, food, health insurance, and energy prices are in fact rising for consumers. Wages are not rising to compete with rising prices.

Why not design a new measure that always measures inflation as 2%? Then the Fed can start cutting rates. Who cares about reality anymore? Well, ordinary people standing at the meat counter in their local grocery store still might.

What we really learned today is that the GOP is flailing ahead of the midterms. They appear to have decided—somewhere in a back room—that their best shot at holding Congress is to reignite old conspiracies and COVID hysteria in order to distract from their failures on Iran, surging prices for basic goods, the end of Medicare subsidies, the Epstein files, and rampant corruption.

My sister just told me she's picking up a used Airstream to pursue the joys of camping in style. Camping is something we grew up with as kids, and we all love it, even though what we experienced was basic tent trailer camping. She's going to hit the road and explore national parks with her recently-retired hubby.

I’m off to Quebec City myself today. If you like art and have a sense of humor about it, check out the Museum of Bad Art. It’s free and all the art is found—sometimes in dumpsters. It’s mostly kitsch, but bad kitsch—like it tried and failed to be Dogs Playing Poker. It’s a fun 30 minutes and it’s near the old city, so if you’re doing tourist stuff, you’ll be in the neighborhood anyway.

Quebec City weather iffy for our entire stay 😕.

I've never been here before; my husband visited in college with a French family he met through living in the international dorm - in the dead of winter. It was his first time out of the country, besides TJ and Ensenada, and he was enchanted despite freezing his... ears off. I'll be interested to watch his reactions now.

We have been in Quebec for the entire month of July and have had zero issues with communication, even though the accent is apparently quite a challenge for the France-French-trained (the sum of my French instruction has been Duolingo beginning in June, but my husband has seven years of high school and university French plus a deep love of the language). We were in a very small village about 30 minutes from the outskirts of Montreal for most of the time and spent the majority of that time in the countryside, where we'd been warned by Torontans that, even if they spoke English, the residents would not deign to speak it with us - but the opposite has been true. Especially if they see the Texas plates on our car or ask us where we're traveling from, they are eager to speak as much English as they have with us, and give my husband a chance to work on his French too.

We've encountered no anti-American sentiment, at least that anyone has been "out" about. Yes, anti-Trump sentiment, but we're used to that... except for one older man in Montreal who accosted my husband as he was parking the car one day, demanding, "Are you really from Texas??" Then, "Are you Republican?" which my husband cautiously affirmed. The man exclaimed, "Thank God for Trump! And thank God for people like you who support him! That's what we need here!" My husband was... bemused.

Humperdinck @6:47 - I'm having doubts that Ms. Keaton would have the ability empathically to tune in to me if I were (for some reason) her Client.

That is the Torontonian's experience. If they thought you were Canadian, they would have been less friendly. I'm American but I've lived in Toronto for a long time, so I'm not sure where I land on that divide.

Glad you're enjoying your trip.

Were the Fauci hearings a dud? Prior to them there were still a lot of people who didn't understand that the whole covid hysteria was whipped up out of nothing. People who have no clue about things like statistics and mortality rates and, well, numbers.

They do understand that someone who received a presidential pardon who subsequently pleads the 5th amendment to all questions in a hearing is a liar who should never have been believed.
