"Let me be clear. I don't think the homoeroticism is the weird part...."

Says Democratic Congresswoman Becca Balint (D-VT), talking about Pete Hegseth and testosterone:

"There are so many people in this administration that have some weird, like, intense homoerotic feelings toward men while also being incredibly homophobic and not just homophobic but, like, hate mongering, fear mongering about the LGBT community. Let me be clear. I don't think the homoeroticism is the weird part. The weird part is that they pretend that that's not what it's about. And so, Pete Hegseth was, like, the example of this, like the manly-manly rugged macho man, and I don't know if you know who Tom of Finland is. Tom of Finland — this is gay male porn that was drawn by a man, and, like, Pete Hegseth is the embodiment of that. So I feel like they must be looking at that as, like, their example of what men look like...."

I blogged about Tom of Finland back in 2014 in a post titled, "Finland issues stamps honoring an artist whose 'sleek sado-masochistic drawings with abundant amounts of beefy male nudity' portrayed 'a sensual life force and being proud of oneself'" ("The first quote in this post title is the way the NYT described the work of Touko Laaksonen, AKA Tom of Finland, and the second quote is from someone in Finland who chose the particular images for the stamps, who added: 'There is never too much [sensual life force and being proud of oneself] in this northern country'")(the only image at my post is of one of the stamps issued by Finland).

Balint gets pretty excited about her ideas in that clip, and that made me want to look up what she studied in college. Wikipedia says: history and women's studies (at Smith). I wonder how many college courses cover Tom of Finland.

I see there's a Tom of Finland Foundation, which has a mission "to promote Tom’s work along with other erotic art so that it receives the academic attention it deserves." It notes: "Tom’s work had a defining impact on the way Gay men throughout the world were perceived and more importantly, how they perceived themselves. Tom’s work has, therefore, had a ripple effect throughout Gay and Straight culture, influencing lifestyle, political tolerance, design, fashion and art." And, if Balint is right, the American military.

ADDED: Balint is trying to use homophobia against those who are or might be homophobic. She calls their homoeroticism "weird" — "weird, like, intense homoerotic feelings" — before denying that "homoeroticism is the weird part," and she may feel safe from accusations that she is homophobic because she herself identifies as gay. "The weird part," she says, "is that they pretend" that their interest in male bodies is not homoerotic.

Be warned. The Left is trying to make men who exercise, set goals, and adopt masculine roles “feel gay” as a way to embarrass them and reduce their societal influence. This persons view isn’t a serious critique, it is a political attack.

Leftist women are harem girls.

That is what democrat women want. This is who they are. They have warped twisted views about masculinity because they don't want to live in a world with good men. They don't want to be good wives.

They want harem life and that means a world run by men who lord over harems. That selects for the type of men Democrats vote for. Just look at the men Democrats vote for.

Among her excited utterances was, “Pete Hegseth is the embodiment of that.” It is unclear exactly to what “that” refers. But it feels like a homophonic slur, something that the false rainbow people like to use. For some reason calling straight men homos gives lefties the jollies.

It’s a strange phenomenon. Is homosexuality something to take “pride” in or something to mock? Which is it? That’s why our side prefers the “live and let live” ideal. It offers a more consistently affable atmosphere.

There are two messages in that. One is aimed at straight men, and it mostly misses because they aren’t the audience she understands. Pete Hegseth has never hidden his goals for military readiness wrt to fitness and health. Men have a unique ability to be strong and exert strength far beyond what women can do, as a general rule. Every soldier needs to be their strongest to survive and they need to depend on each other for survival. He wants them to go into battle, win, and come home. It’s not rocket science. She is just a political hack who cares more about the appearance of any military unit versus its readiness and ability to survive.

(1) Getting tested for low 'T' and then perhaps supplementing your body with doses of additional 'T' is not like cutting off your breasts or penis. It is not like taking doses of the opposite gender hormones- for the rest of your life. It is not changing your gender. In fact, it is NOTHING like what we generally know as 'gender affirming care'.

(2) I don't know why Democrats have this idea that the 'hiring' process for our military should be similar to the admittance process at their favorite university. One has the goal of producing young people who learn how to protest your use of an air conditioner. The other has the goal of breaking things and killing people in the defense of the country.

I prefer men with normally charged doses of 'T' doing that dirty work. I don't care about the 'T' levels of our local weekend protestors wearing their recently purchased Hamas gear.

And I'm tired of our politicians not understanding why we have a military, what their hard purpose is, and what kind of man or woman it takes to get that hard work done.

That's a messaging problem.

What the Dems have written in the sand is, "If you can read this you're a gay Nazi! Fuck You! Now land and be my lover and stay here with me forever, and get what you have coming to you, you stupid asshole! AHHHHHH!!! AAAHHHHHH!!!"

That's more than a messaging problem.

Hegseth's dating/relationships/marriage track record is pretty definitively hetero. With the - frankly excessive - number of women involved it's hard to see them all as "beards". If you want bad guys to fear the US military, projecting the image that they are selected for high testosterone levels is not a bad idea. Inclusiveness, now that was the bad idea. For combat forces that is.

I don’t believe I’ve ever come across a person more insecure about their masculinity than Hegseth. Ever.

During the 17-day drive toward Saint-Lô in Normandy, the Allies suffered roughly 40,000 casualties to advance about seven miles. Many of those casualties were inflicted by teenage conscripts fighting for Hitler. War has never cared about youth, good looks, or photo ops. If we ever find ourselves in a shooting war with Iran, the battlefield won't be grading uniforms, haircuts, or jawlines. Bullets are the ultimate equal-opportunity employer. Handsome soldiers, homely soldiers, Ivy League graduates, and high school dropouts all become casualties the same way when strategy fails. So perhaps we could retire the "pretty soldier" aesthetic and return to the old-fashioned metrics: competence, training, discipline, logistics, and leadership. History has always been far more impressed by winning than by looking good on television.

I think it's interesting that the left seems to recognize "homoeroticism," a sexually idealized view of gay men, but can't seem to muster up a single sexually ideal gay man as a spokesperson for its platform. The other thing about "homoeroticism" is that it strongly implies The Closet, yet they *also* can't muster up a sexually ideal "straight" (quotes to imply possibly closeted) man. Back when Don’t Ask Don’t Tell was being turned into Come on In, the web comic Terminal Lance, drawn by Jewish Basque USMC combat vet Max Uriarte, had a series called “It’s Already Gay.” Each strip pointed out some longstanding military tradition that maps pretty well onto longstanding gay culture. Like perfectionist clothing and grooming standards, rigorous fitness, literal grabass in communal showers, etc.

So it’s a chicken/egg question. Does latent homoeroticism achieve full release in military culture, or is homoeroticism just an extreme version of admiring and emulating the traits needed for military success?

Admiral Bill McRaven once gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas, often referred to as the "make your bed" speech.

One of the tales in his speech was about one of the tasks performed when undertaking the tests to become a Navy Seal, which I will quote here:

"Over a few weeks of difficult training, my SEAL class which started with 150 men was down to just 42. There were now six boat crews of seven men each. I was in the boat with the tall guys, but the best boat crew we had was made up with little guys, the munchkin crew, we called them. No one was over five foot five.

The munchkin boat crew had one American Indian, one African American, one Polish American, one Greek American, one Italian American, and two tough kids from the Midwest. They out paddled outran and out swam all the other boat crews.

The big men in the other boat crews would always make good natured fun of the tiny little flippers the munchkins put on their tiny little feet prior to every swim, but somehow these little guys from every corner of the nation in the world always had the last laugh swimming faster than everyone and reaching the shore long before the rest of us.

SEAL training was a great equalizer. Nothing mattered but your will to succeed. Not your color, not your ethnic background, not your education, not your social status. If you want to change the world, measure a person by the size of their heart, not by the size of their flippers."

Link: https://www.rev.com/transcripts/admiral-william-mcraven-make-your-bed-commencement-speech-transcript

It's an interesting tale because it helps dispel the idea that the tallest are necessarily the ones who will perform the best in the boat activity.I think the notion that testosterone levels are going to be the biggest factor in how soldiers perform in the military is also a dangerous notion. Not to say that physical fitness isn't important, but there is so much to it -- you have to have many more skills than being physically fit.

john mosby చెప్పారు...

A bit more seriously: you need fitness even in the postmodern military. Technology always seems to translate into more gadgets with batteries to carry around. Risk-averse generals wrap troops in Kevlar which may kill them via heatstroke and heart attacks unless they have a high level of fitness. Hegseth seems to be emphasizing functional fitness tests: ruck marches, sandbag throws, etc, that try to replicate battlefield tasks in a measurable, easily logisticable way. He doesn’t want fat cattle grazing around his bases, but he is simultaneously getting away from the tyranny of BMI and the types of fitness tests that advantage skinny pretty long distance runners. If you can haul combat gear to a time standard but you still have a dadbod, you’re okay with him.

Uniformity and toy-soldier stuff: yes, it is important. The Geneva Convention requires us to have uniforms. Gear should be worn in a uniform manner so that you can find your dying buddy’s first aid kit, or your dead buddy’s ammo, on him in the dark. Washing and pressing uniforms kill lice and other nasties that plague (sometimes literally) densely packed military installations. Haircuts and clean shaves make gas masks and helmets fit and work properly. Teaching recruits to take pride in their uniforms is the first step in teaching them to take care of the equipment their lives depend on. Parade ground drill is an efficient way of moving people around in non combat environments, and it teaches you how valuable and difficult coordinating big groups can be (counter column or wheel, anyone?).

All of this stuff can be taken to extremes. I hate units that effectively made troops buy a second set of gear for layout inspections, for example. Completely defeats the purpose. And rehearsing drill movements beyond the point where people stop walking into each other is time better spent on your core specialty, whether that’s bayonet fighting or baking.

Hegseth seems to be going for the functional stuff, not the toy soldier stuff. CC, JSM

Just a wordy version of "If you have a problem with homosexuality, you must be gay".

So, she's been think about this a lot... So she's gay and likes thinking about men having a homoerrotic engine driving their pursuits of masculinity. It sounds a bit like straight guys enjoying watching lesbians have sex with each other.

"Finland issues stamps honoring an artist whose 'sleek sado-masochistic drawings with abundant amounts of beefy male nudity' portrayed 'a sensual life force and being proud of oneself'"

Why can’t we have stamps with lesbo porn? Trump should issue some, just to win support from the women’s studies majors.

The left demand we purge the military - every branch - and re-fill with leftist weirdos.
The left demand we de-fund the police, and re-fill with obedient Walzian Soviets.
The left demand we defund and dismantle immigrations and customs - 40% of are Mexican Americans - thus proving leftists are all racists.

Eva Marie చెప్పారు...

She uses “weird” three times. The word doesn’t resonate with me, and I don’t think it resonates with most conservatives - but I think I know who it does connect with.
“Weird” is a status insult. It only wounds people whose identity is bound up in social acceptance - people who’ve been taught that their lifestyle is who they are. For them, being called weird isn’t an adjective - it’s an eviction notice from the culture.
That’s why the Democrat promise underneath the word is: we’ll defend you from this label - as long as you stay on our side. It’s conditional acceptance dressed up as unconditional acceptance. Drift in thought or vote, and the shield drops. Ask the gay conservatives, the Black Trump voters, or the lesbians questioning gender ideology how that works out.
Plenty of conservatives live so-called alternative lives. But their lifestyle is an attribute, not the load-bearing wall of their identity - so “weird” bounces off. The insult only cuts the people the attacker has already made dependent on her approval.

The military has fitness standards for a reason.

The guy upthread who thinks just because we have rifles means nobody has to march, or dig in, or carry a wounded guy, or survive on low rations...

WTH are you babbling about?

Even in WW2 we had fitness qualifications.

Hitler Youth didn't need them because they weren't going to advance.

This is just more 4chan filtering up into the cultural gestalt. I think the current thing is to explain how being into girls is actually gay. It's quite funny in a way, until it ends up coming out of a person with some authority's mouth.

Wow is that how we do the possessive on that construction?

A person for whom everything is about sex thinks that everyone else thinks the same way? No, it's just you.

I imagine she would have been at least called on her bullshit in the past, and that's what's changed in the current age.

**"Fascism is the frenzy of sexual cripples"- Wilhelm Reich**

The left just cannot let go of the ludicrous Freudian delusions, can they? This overlaps with their obsession with penis size among gun owners. Psychoanalytic "armchair science" hasn't been relevant to anyone except monomaniacal leftist ideologues for fifty years.

Meanwhile, the real scientists who actually collect data have found that right-wingers have more satisfying sex and plenty more of it than leftists. Moreover, gun owners have been found to possess slightly larger organs of generation than non-gun owners, although the difference is small and probably not statistically significant.

Trump supporters this week have credulously asked how it was possible for Iran to respond militarily after we "destroyed" all of their missiles. I have a feeling that a lot more people are going to be asking similar questions about oil and gasoline prices and supplies in the near future.

The US has at last figured out how to win -- testosterone shots for the troops.

Unfortunately, this is a war, not a physical fitness test. Trump's Secretary of Defense Hegseth apparently doesn't know the difference.

Tell me about a more one-sides war than this. We lost as many men just leaving Afghanistan under the last CIC and the result was the opposite of destroying their weapons and economy, but I understand your need to get everything backwards and wrong until name change day. It's a brand you're working hard to maintain.
