In the DC area it got worse as the day went on. I went out around 9:30 and had to cut my walk to 2 miles. I probably should have stayed in.

You might consider going onto Amazon and ordering a respirator and some spare filters, in the event that 'going out' becomes more compulsory, for whatever reason. They're not very expensive, and they don't take up much room - but they can be very handy, for a variety of reasons.
I was a bit surprised to read that another Democratic Gubernatorial candidate, Sara Rodriguez, (Link having just earned Crowley's support, dropped out today. There are lots of Rodriguez signs in my neighborhood.

In Pittsburgh today and smoke coverage seemed similar. We did a river boat cruise today and the tour leader related a story about Pittsburgh history and used the word “pshaw”. My wife and I laughed.

Very good reporting of a complex subject.
Zelensky has to manage immediately below him a triangle comprised of:
-- a minister of defense (civilian political control subject to appointment by head of government representing national politics)
-- a military chief of staff (not necessarily a uniformed commander-in-chief). Effective military command has unified command at the top political level, not the uniformed level. Grant has to report to Lincoln.
-- a change agent managing the introduction of technological change into the structure (often the deputy secretary of defense in the US when the Pentagon is functionally effective)
Fedorov appears to have been at the wrong place in the triangle. He didn't have the political skills to manage the position power.
Who should have a sense of how to win is a good question. My sense is that is the core task of the head of government because the top leader has to internalize that vision so that subsequent decisions are congruent with achieving that core objective. Then the head of government has to keep that defense leadership triangle congruent and functioning towards the common goal. The top general's job is to both recommend and to execute, but the policy -- the encapsulation of the vision -- must come from higher up.
My takeaway is that despite the current difficulty the Ukrainian defense effort is a better managed endeavor than I had thought.

Well. The racoons ate my goldfish. So, oh well. Except, now, there are mosquito larvae floating in the pond. In the past, the goldfish would have hoovered them up in no time. But the racoons ate my goldfish. So, the mosquitos burgeon.
I bought those goldfish at a pet store, where they sell them, four for a dollar, to feed to other animals. So, I suppose I could just go buy another dozen of them, toss them in the pond, and let them eat mosquito larvae. Until they get big and fat, and the racoons eat them.
Somehow, I feel like that would be wrong. It would be a violation of my fiduciary obligation to the goldfish I buy at four to the dollar, in a plastic bag full of water with a beige rubber band twisted around the end. The deal is, they eat mosquito larvae, I protect them from racoons. Obviously, I could just let them get big enough to interest racoons, and then -- ta-ta! -- replace them, with younger goldfish. Remind you of anything?
Buy a couple of piranhas to go with them.
But that is not the way my mind is working. I certainly intend to buy more goldfish, to eat the mosquito larvae (whose welfare plays only a negative role in my calculations), but I am not comfortable with just letting the racoons eat them, and buying more.
I'm looking at two approaches. I could put some steel mesh down in the pond, so there is a region the fish can enter but the racoons cannot. That would be some work, and complicates maintaining the pond, but it seems like it might protect the goldfish.
And then, there is shooting the racoons. Which is, of course, illegal. Democrats empathize with racoons. Like racoons, dead Democrats eat no fish. So, there is such a thing as a "good Democrat".

I would argue that modern time began when England built the first timepiece accurate enough for ship navigation- in 1759. The British admiralty under the Longitude Act of 1714. offered a £20,000 prize for a clock accurate enough on the ocean to calculate longitude with accuracy. Land based clocks were very accurate. Add in the rocking and rolling and pitching and yawing of a ship at sea- and they weren't. Greenwich Mean Time was already a thing, and it was the difference between observed noon and GMT noon that determined longitude. Local noon was easily determined- the sun was straight overhead. Latitude was far easier to calculate.

We're outside Montreal for the month of July. One thing we've noticed, because it's unavoidable, is the large number of mobility scooters all over the place - everywhere we go, there are people (mostly elderly, but some not) tooling around on them, on bike paths, down the shoulders of roads, on sidewalks, in every shop. When we've taken public transportation, I will say we've only run into a couple, but we haven't taken that much public transportation here - takes too long.
Anyway. My husband wondered aloud why so many of them. As the recipient of two new knees, I answered from a sudden epiphany: it's because they can't get joint replacement surgery as quickly as I could.
My first question to AI was inexpertly worded: "In Canada, are mobility scooters considered a substitute for joint replacement surgery?" Of course it answered no - because mobility scooters just minimize pain and strain on the joints, whereas joint replacement fixes the problem. Yeah, thanks, genius. (The detailed answer, however, while touting the "generous government subsidies" that allow for so many people to have the scooters, did say that they were useful "while waiting" for the surgery.)
So I tried again: "In Canada, are mobility scooters used as a stopgap while waiting for joint replacement surgery?" And the answer to that was "Yes, absolutely. With some of the longest wait times for orthopedic surgery in the world..."
It then occurred to me that the scooters could be analogous to puberty blockers: ostensibly "buying time," but realistically starting the person down one particular path: once you have your house and car set up for the scooter, once you've been sitting instead of walking for months or even years, and knowing that the surgery rehab is going to be long and arduous, why not just keep using the scooter? I haven't tried to figure out how I would word that query yet, but it's been shorts weather up here since we got to Canada at the end of May, and I've seen no scars like mine.
Interesting tidbit I just read. The Canadian l̶a̶d̶y̶ woman who slapped and assaulted an American teen? Eligible for expedited removal because she's also a visa overstay. Well, I guess her husband can join her in Canada. Whoops! No, he can't. He's got a criminal record so Canada won't allow him in. Don't know the record- it could be a DUI. I have acquaintances who've been turned away at the border for that who were, until that point, totally unaware Canada didn't want them.
Is there anyone who feels sorry for the unfortunate couple? Anyone with suggestions of a welcoming country they could flee to for asylum from the draconian laws of the USA and Canada where actions have consequences?

Trump has the tariffs issue wrong. We already impose high tariffs on Canadian lumber. If we reduced them, Canada could harvest more of their trees and sell the wood to American builders, which would help bring down the cost of new homes in the U.S.
A few years ago, I was in Vancouver, BC, when wildfire smoke from Washington and Oregon was so thick you couldn’t see the sky. The haze stretched all the way to the northern end of Vancouver Island. Canada sent help — not whiney complaints.
I went out for my morning walk in Southwest Florida today and the Canadian wildfire smoke has made it all the way down here! I ended up only doing one 0.65 mile lap around the block outside, then went inside and walked the rest of my 1.50 mile workout in the house. AQI was 64. I looked at the AQI for my former workplace (I retired June 30th) and it was 126 there! Apparently, they were the local Ground Zero for the smoke.
Workplace was in south Fort Myers, about 22 miles away by car.

On Canadian healthcare. Before I retired, better than a decade ago, I had a physician client by Reno. He personally had the 2nd medical particle accelerator in NV. The other one was at UMC in Las Vegas - the biggest teaching hospital in the state. He took me on a tour. It was great, with 2’-3’ thick walls. Great with certain types of cancers. When he was bragging about his toy, he mentioned that there was just a single one in his native Canada. He came down to the US, because he earned far more money here. But still loves living in Canada, so plans to retire there. But stay on Medicare. He had a goldmine with his toy, and paid max Medicare taxes every year, so why not?
