"La la la la."

That's the call from the press as Trump arrives at Versailles Palace.

Is that how reporters try to get a leader's attention in France? I don't think so. I think they would normally use "Mr. President." So is "La la la la" like shouting "Hey!"? No, I don't think that's the case either. I'm understanding "La la la la" as a more random filler sound. I consulted Grok: "'La la la la' functions more like rhythmic, attention-grabbing noise or an extension of the French interjection "Oh là là!" (often elongated for emphasis)."

The symbolism of Trump signing unconditional surrender in Versailles. At least he persuaded the Iranians not to make him do it in a Railway carriage , near the town of Compiègne.

Perhaps it is a comment on the behavior of France’s First Lady, who has repeatedly relied on Trump to steady herself, reaching for his arms and hand while obviously avoiding touching Macron. She apparently takes great pleasure in piling on small humiliations to her husband in public.

The “la-la-la-la” is just the French photographers’ way of getting his attention - like saying “hey - look over here” so that they can get his picture.

Oui

Whiskeybum ayon kay ...

It is not an interjection - Grok is way off here. “Oh là là!" Is like saying “Unbelievable!”. It’s more of a request - they are saying something more like “face this way!”

I've spent a combined many many months in France as student, tourist, visiting friends. I have never once heard anyone say the cliched French, "Oh la la".

@MJB, oh she touches Macron alright...his face...with dainty little fists of fury.

Brigitte needs to take a cue from a certain powerful black woman and stencil a rocket on the front of that evening gown. I'm thinking a SPCX Falcon Heavy.

Mike (MJB Wolf) ayon kay ...

True. She’s a slapper too. But this trip it’s her behaving as if Immanuel Macron is radioactive and Trump is her rock. This kind of interpersonal drama is not uncommon but strange to see in this setting.

MadTownGuy ayon kay ...

In French, "là" (with an accent) translates to "there" or "here" depending on the context. It is primarily an adverb used to indicate a specific location or point in time. The most common English translations include:There (e.g., Regarde là-bas -> Look over there)Here (e.g., Je suis là -> I'm here)Now (e.g., Pas là -> Not now / Not right now).

AI confirms my thought. I think they're saying "here," or "over here."

'Oy ! !' The first time I heard a Brit use that to get attention on a drilling rig, I was flabbergasted and thought it was really funny.

Aggie ayon kay ...

"...She apparently takes great pleasure in piling on small humiliations to her husband in public...."

She likes to remind him who's in charge, and everyone else, too. I saw a video clip yesterday of the photos being taken of Macron and the Italian leader, Meloni, and Brigitte was wedging herself between them, determined to be in the picture - and it looked like she wasn't even supposed to be up there. Meloni's facial expressions were really something.

For Brigitte, Emmanuel will always be that little boy he taught to be a penist.

Mike (MJB Wolf) ayon kay ...

Meloni’s eyes are legendary. She earned favor by being the only leader with enough compassion to retrieve Joe when he’d wander off. IMO she showed more care than the fake doctor Jill.

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

Brigitte looks great. That gown is stunning. A+

Howard ayon kay ...

She's dressed like a maid in the Upstairs Downstairs show from the 70's

Howard ayon kay ...

"Y'know the thing about Brigitte...she's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When she comes at ya, doesn't seem to be livin' until she bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white..."

bagoh20 ayon kay ...

She does look great... for any age.

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

. . . perhaps a French maid? If that’s your fantasy, that’s your fantasy.

Howard ayon kay ...

How is osteoporosis and frozen Botox face attractive?

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

I don’t know Howard, you tell me. You’re the one fantasizing about upstairs maids.

You turn your head toward the sound... the reporter was doing what he could to draw trump's attention... duh.

Howard ayon kay ...

Ouch, Eva.

rehajm ayon kay ...

she's got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes

…well done Howard. You know it’s all psychological: You yell le brochet de mer, everybody says, 'Huh? What?' You yell le requin we've got a panic on our hands on le 14 juillet…

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

Why? There’s nothing wrong with fantasies. That wasn’t meant as a put down.
Also if Brigitte has had cosmetic surgery, kudos to the doc. Her face doesn’t look as if it’s been botoxed or injected with fillers or stretched. She just looks really good.

Howard ayon kay ...

My fantasy is a smart wholesome athletic outdoorsy woman with the girl next door average good looks without makeup or plastic surgery. Brigitte's face is what one thinks about to prevent premature deloading of the essence of one's precious bodily fluids.

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

This reminds me of a scene I saw years ago in Paris.
I used to take long walks, wandering without much of a plan. One day I turned onto a narrow street - long corridors between buildings, dim even in daylight. The women were everywhere. The younger ones stood near the front, composed and watchful. Farther back were older, harder faces, mesh stockings torn, looks more direct.
I was one of the only women passing through. I kept moving, doing my best Jane Goodall impression - observing closely while pretending not to notice where I’d ended up.
Then this small, perfectly framed moment unfolded. A young, striking prostitute stood in a doorway. A Japanese man in a suit, briefcase in hand, approached her. She tossed her hair back, turned, and gestured for him to follow.
The look on his face - surprise opening into boyish delight - was immediate and unguarded. It lasted only a second, but I’ve never forgotten it.

bagoh20 ayon kay ...

I don't know many 70 year old women that look that good, but I don't live in France, and only dine at Versailles on weekends.

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

Your fantasy sounds like Camilla, the King’s wife. To each his own.

Howard ayon kay ...

Now you're just trying to make me throw up in my mouth, Eva.

RideSpaceMountain ayon kay ...

I'm picturing a Howard and Brigitte Romcom called The Treaty of Versigh. It'll be like Downton Abbey, but with twice the maids and a chateau without a 2nd floor.

Aggie ayon kay ...

I dunno..... I'll say that she looks better than she normally does, but she still looks like she's already been embalmed.

Smilin' Jack ayon kay ...

“Is that how reporters try to get a leader's attention in France? I don't think so. I think they would normally use "Mr. President." So is "La la la la" like shouting "Hey!"?”

It’s French for “Yo!”

Lazarus ayon kay ...

Europeans use their words for "here" and "there" differently from English speakers. It sounds like it's just one guy yelling "La la la la" in the crowd which suggests that it's not all that common. The other guy yelling "par ici" (this way or over here) may be using a more common expression, but most of the shouts are "President Trump!"

Brigitte is very thin and that does something to make up for the age difference between the Macrons.

"La la la la peace song."
"La La Peace Song," unheard hit of 1973/4.

hanuman_prodigious_leaper ayon kay ...

Mommy... Is Trump here yet?

s'opihjerdt ayon kay ...

The actual definition of "hey!" is "listen to the sounds that are coming out of my mouth!" So it would seem that lalala does mean hey.

Eva Marie ayon kay ...

Now, every time you think of your girl next door, you’ll picture Camilla in her undies. Sweet.

It's better than just yelling "Hey!" to get attention. It's louder for one thing. And nothing in nature sounds like it. I learned that over 50 years ago at Outward Bound.

Aggie ayon kay ...

Dude, when a hairy 300lb toolpusher with a Cockney accent bellows it out, the comic effect is magnificent.
