"Unless I am free to do what I do better than anyone else, bring this Institution back, physically, financially, and artistically, I have no interest in continuing what could only be a hopeless journey."

Said Donald Trump, quoted in "Trump’s Kennedy Center plans were blocked by a judge. What happens next?/The ruling has thrown the Washington institution’s immediate future into a state of uncertainty" (WaPo)(gift link).

IN THE COMMENTS: Fred Drinkwater said: "The name change was a deliberate 'last straw' intended to provoke this judicial response."

That really does make the most sense. It was insanely hamhanded. I'm going to assume he didn't want to fix this place, and the best — or most entertaining — way to avoid blame for letting it rot was to bait a judge into preventing him from saving it.

ADDED: There's a new piece up at WaPo now, "Trump’s name may come off the Kennedy Center. He could still destroy it. The Kennedy Center saga encapsulates all of the needless destruction of the Trump administration. The center’s troubles may not be over yet." That's by Philip Kennicott. Key insight: "The worst thing Trump could do right now is nothing, simply remain chair and let the center languish. He could decline to authorize budgets or renovations, leave the calendar empty or pocket plans for recovery. The center would be stuck in perpetual suspended animation.... His angry messages since the court ruling prove without a doubt what has been obvious all along: He never cared for the center, for the arts or culture...."

It's nice that Trump wants to renovate the Kennedy Center, isn't it. I support that, because he is very good at getting stuff like that done. But there are two things that he should not be allowed to do with it.

If you've ever seen the interior shots of the grotesque rococo decor in his Trump Tower apartment, you know that he should not be involved in the design of the Kennedy Center redo (even though we all know that he would be in the thick of it).

And then, “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts”! Has there been a more egregious and clumsy manifestation of this man's Narcissistic Personality Disorder? Uh, just no.

I thought it was a dumb idea to put Trump's name on it in the first place. I don't know that it was Trump's idea originally, only that the name change was decided by a committee that was appointed by him. Coupled with the bevvy of performers backing out histrionically, for maximum awkwardness, I'd say dump it and forgo the restoration; let it molder and rot with minimal maintenance. Some would say, a fitting legacy for JFK, but I wouldn't.

I would say it's a fitting legacy for the petty-minded that would put up such obstacles, and I think that is the nature of the trap.

Addendum to the JFK legacy.

To my mind, the greatest thing JFK did was to start the battle for Black civil rights. He succeeded at the University of Alabama against George Wallace. On our trip to AL last week, we visited the "stand in the schoolhouse door." I was really moved. A great success and Alabama is better for that victory.

But consider that in 2026, many Dem states continue to take the Confederate position that federal law is not supreme. Just this month, the DOJ sued MN seeking to enjoin the MN AG from continuing his climate change lawsuit against oil and gas companies.

And, of course, MN thinks ICE has no authority to enforce federal immigration laws in MN. I heard a student in my daughter's law school class claim that the Twin Cities suffered a "federal occupation."

I'm not sure Trump was doing 4D chess and provoking a judicial overreaction. He understands that politics is downstream from culture, and he wants the governmental cultural instruments to reflect real American majority culture, not elite culture. Look at what he did with PBS, VoA, etc. His lawsuits against the MSM and his use of Truth Social and Musk's X are part of the same effort.

So I think he really wanted the KC to reflect what most Americans like. Look at his KC Honors, for example. I don't know why he wanted to do the physical renovation first. I go there all the time, and there are some run-down bits, but nothing to scare away all the high-ticket payers. The private security force has also always been good at keeping the homeless down to single-digit numbers of well-behaved people who sit quietly and watch the free concerts or read. Somehow they know not to go there to fall asleep or scream at the voices.

So Trump could have just focused on booking non-lefty acts. If you book them, the fans will come.

Maybe that's what he'll do with a ban on the renovation and his name off the building, and the do-nothing Congress refusing to take it over.

Not 4D chess, but Art of the Deal ask for the sun and settle for the moon. CC, JSM

Enigma ने कहा…

The Kennedy Center was built in 1971, and as of a few years ago, it hadn't been updated or maintained since. They had dated econo wood decor typical of that era, threadbare upholstery, a stained exterior, a truck-damaged, sagging, and cracked cantilever section over the Rock Creek - Potomac Parkway, etc.

Google Street View shows the wear and tear very well.

A fundamental issue is that it was wedged into an unsuitable riverfront location flanked by a dozen roads and next to the literal Watergate condo complex. That space is suitable for limited access housing and demands cars in a city that relies on the Metro. It has poor access from everywhere. One must ride slow and crowded shuttle busses from the Metro, or walk far longer than dressed-up guests want to walk in sweaty or wet weather.

The suburban venue "The Music Center at Strathmore" in Bethesda is far better in every way (strathmore.org) -- and one block from a Metro station too.

Wait a minute.

From the first article: ..."A federal judge issued a ruling this week temporarily blocking key parts of President Donald Trump’s effort to transform the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, throwing the institution’s future into a state of uncertainty.... Trump has made the planned overhaul of the cultural center a priority for his second term...."

From the second, hyperventilating article: "...Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio member of the center’s board, brought the case, and she was thrilled.....Audiences and artists who might have held their nose and participated in the organization’s programming felt obliged, on principle, to avoid any patronage or contact..... The Washington National Opera was forced to part ways with the center, and the National Symphony suffered a continuing severe loss of ticket revenue.....the legal judgment halts the looming closure, at least temporarily. ...So, Cooper’s ruling won’t in itself save the Kennedy Center. Only Congress can do that, and Congress can only do that if Trump gets out of the way.....

So a member of the Board of Trustees sues the board? And a judge steps in to halt the renovation that Trump has planned? Because he wants to destroy the JFK Center?

It would appear the whole kerfuffle is about Trump's name being on it, and they're willing to let the place crumble if it just means his name isn't on it.

This one sounds a lot like the 'All Bases Covered' strategy: Trump, the War Criminal when he attacks, and Trump Always Chickens Out when he doesn’t.

I guess they think they're being smart, and maybe they are, compared to the others - in their group.

However, it's time to let it go.

I'm glad he'll have the Trump Ballroom to be a permanent burr under the Left's saddle. It will not be torn down, and strained attempts by the Democrats to force everyone to use whatever bullshit name they give it in future will fail.

But I don't care about what name the Kennedy Center ends up with, and I really would prefer not to have a living person's face on our currency and coinage, particularly if they are still in office. Trump has a lot of other fish to fry besides these entertaining sideshows and vanity projects.

Get to it, Mr. President! You don't need to worry about monuments. There's an aircraft carrier with your name on it, some red-state airports and streets and schools, and perhaps a coin or bill if Republicans get the hegemony I expect due to demographic realities. The name of Trump will still be spoken ten thousand years from now, in the same breath as Caesar and Napoleon, especially if we have to fight a historic and devastating civil war against the enemy Democrats to protect ourselves from their vicious communist tyranny.
