Got a tick in May 1994, right after I got sober. Got Lyme disease. Got rid of it by December. Thank God. I've seen what it can do to people. (I've told the longer story here before)

I don't think you can outrun ticks.

Just take a shower when you get home, put your clothes in the washer, and tie up your hair in a tight bun before you go out. Bandannas and hats sprayed with anti-tick spray are usecul.

Ticks are an army of interlopers.

Ticks will have you when and where they want you.

I spent the last fortnight doing extensive yard work in Maine. Despite the full set of preventive chemicals and body coverings, several ticks made it past my defenses and had to be tweezered off. Now I get to wait for the telltale signs of Lyme Disease.
Worse than ticks are brown caterpillar moths with the ability to inflict rashes and itching far exceeding poison ivy.
Back in Los Angeles now. You shouldn't take your comfort for granted. I don't.

Here we have ticks sensing our body warmth like drones and dropping on us with their babies from above; lazy copperheads curled in the paths for maximum sun. Worst are the new wasps, two kinds, causing amazing pain and MRSA-like sores deep into skin. Pollen and leaf mold join forces. I have parted ways with the outdoors and long for treeless tundra, as with every awful summer.
