Low reading rates? Students or teachers?

Banksy's latest is a real 3-D f'in statue, in the middle of bleedin Westminster.

Okay, come on, he's no longer a guerrilla artist. I'm sure he can't mold and cure resin himself, or operate the equipment for this tupe of installation.

There must have been a sizable crew involved in this - and the cooperation of the authorities.

I hope so - otherwise a jihadi just needs to put up a "statue" made of C4 to get a massive result. CC, JSM

From a BBC article, it's sounding like Banksy & Co followed the first rule of blagging: look like you belong there. They had a truck and a crane, they wore yellow vests, put out cones. I guess no one thought twice about middle-of-the-night construction to avoid traffic.

But that Waterloo Place is less than a mile from Buckingham Palace, and even closer to Horse Guards and Number 10. You would think the Met would put out a list of planned construction at each roll call and tell officers to make contact with the ones on their beat. And if only for curiosity out of being bored on midnights in a commercial area, you'd think some copper would have gone to take a look at any unannounced construction. Especially with the war going on and a history of elaborate terrorist attacks (Brighton bombing, anyone?). CC, JSM

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This beholder likes Banksy's work. I always think of him as the art world's Harry Tuttle from Gilliam's film Brazil.

Expecting "political edge" is overplaying what Banksy was about however. A lot of his pieces are just about humor. And there is often not great depth either to the humorous or to the political aspects of his pieces especially.

That's not a critique, although the snootier end of the art establishment loves to posit it as such. But it is to say that looking for some deep or meaningful 'message' is most likely pointless.

The animals sequence is most likely no more than a puzzle and answer "what the heck is he doing all these animals for?"... leading up to the reveal "oh look, they've all been let loose from the zoo". A bit of fun, with a vaguely anti-establishment vibe in other words. Enjoy the joke, and don't fret too much about deep meaning. If you think it needs extra levels of depth than that, then part of the joke is on you. That's the whole point.

Finished dpoing the DERBY this afternoon. Late scratches didnt affect numbers of the draw but if your handicapping moving stals on the gate is big. Horses running styles can be affected from the draw of their gate(FURTHER ADO 1st goes to the 17 hole(0-46 ) in all DERBY RACES, but then moves down to 16 hole making his running style a little more compromised with more scrunching and banging out of the gate . Favorite still in 1 hole(hasnt cashed in 40 years but definitely best horse in the field, not using him on top at all)Its $250.00 WIN #18 FURTHER ADO (ive calculated the compromised move of stalls and still like hi overall. Will be using him with the THE PUMA in $50 boxed exacta (i have been back and forth with these two.The rest will be gimmick bets in exactas and triples rounds out about $450 total wager . There are I believe at least 5 that can win and at least 5 no chance leaving it pretty wide open. Before Breeders cup in October morning I was able to front most of my wagers for the cup cashing n the Bandit(now thats a spot of Luck) Casino downstairs from Poker room and Racing windows. After today next event will be SARATOGA MEET IN AUGUST( not july cards ,they killed the sport by extending that meet from 4 weeks to 6 with cheap claiming races in July I stay away unless we happen to fly to New York to see family. Last years trainer winning the Derby Bill Mott HAS HIS SON IN NEXT STALL TO HIS RUNNER THIS YEAR which is really cool. DONT see this much in the Sport of Kings . No betting slips on this day pure vocal send ins!! Betting slips for novices, and they have a hard time figuring out what the heck is a triple part wheel back and forth and how to write it down :) Got to love it! Hey coming up with these new people in charge coming up to 40 trillion in US debt and nobody cares might as well send it in and pay for a new track Like Belmont Park and Pimlico INSTEAD OF SENDING IT TO THIRD WORLD DESPOTS. Watters also had Chris Hansen on, who did one of his pedo stings on a DC Metropolitan Police lieutenant who thought he was texting with a high-school boy. Really very surprised that the sheriff's office that actually does the work of these stings went along with putting the LT on TV. And very very surprised they let Hansen's "interview" continue after the LT said, on camera, that he was not going to answer questions without an attorney. Hansen countered with, "but you will listen to me!" The LT didn't answer anything, but he could make a lot of hay out of the Miranda violation. And the deputies were not surprised by his status - unfortunately he had done some video calls in uniform. So they had a lot of time to figure out how to handle him. And they didn't inform the MPDC command until they made the arrest. That's pretty damn disrespectful. And also dangerous to everyone involved.

Lou is gay and the former head of the DC FOP. He could definitely accuse these guys of entrapment and selective prosecution. Probably not win in court, but could still threaten enough damage to these types of operations that they might give him some sort of break.

That’s because no one in Trump world has the faintest clue about how the global modern economy works. When your country is run by an administration that thinks because you produce oil, you will not be hit by a global price spike, this is what you get.

This wider strategic failure with its enormous future economic costs is becoming apparent to a majority of the American public.

Men have the power to vote and turn this country around. The question is whether they’ll use it before it becomes irrelevant.

Peachy કહ્યું...

Most men don't vote.

Mason G કહ્યું...

Pew Research Center: "Men favored Trump by 12 percentage points in the 2024 election, while women favored Harris by 7 points."

More votes from men or fewer from women are needed.

Mason G કહ્યું...

U.S. Census Bureau:

"63.7% of men voted, compared to 66.9% of women."

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

I was surprised voting rates are as high as they are. In the last election: 67% of registered women (91 million) voted and 64% of registered men (83 million) voted. 121 million women eligible to vote. 115 million men eligible to vote. The strength that the men have is that more of them voted for Trump than women voted for Harris.

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

@Mason G: there are more registered women voters. 75% of 121 million. Men 72% of 115 million.

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

Again the strength of the male vote is that they vote at a much higher rate for Republicans than women vote for Democrats.

Mason G કહ્યું...

From Pew Research, through Perplexity:

"A reasonable estimate is that the U.S. has roughly 125 million eligible women and 117 million eligible men, so women outnumber men among eligible voters by about 8 million."

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

Since 1980 (every presidential election): Women have voted at higher rates than men.

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

Plus the cheating of course which depressed the male pro Republican vote.

Eva Marie કહ્યું...

Actual male Republican vote is probably higher by a few percentage points.

Mason G કહ્યું...

Women seem to support the party doing the cheating to a greater extent than men do.

I bought a "cultivator" at Lowe's. It's a mini-tiller. It has a two-stroke engine, and it drives a little steel cage that tears up the dirt. Rather feebly. But I have to say, it gets the job done. It howls away, and grinds away, and when it hits rock it jumps a foot in the air, but if you let it work, it will turn some hard-scrabble into plantable garden.

So, I'm out in the yard, tilling a space for bush beans, and I find that a song is playing in my head -- Ode to Billy Joe. I'm remembering the swooping organ, and the matter-of-fact, laconic vocal. Really, an excellent song, if you are old enough to recall, and still altogether enigmatic.

"And brother said he recollected when he and Tom and Billy Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show."
Billy Joe was no doubt a friend of "Brother", and she was Little Sis. They put a frog down her back. Good joke! Until Little Sis gets a little bigger, and one day, you make another joke, and she just looks at you. And whatever she is now, she's sure as Hell no joke. And she's looking right at you. She's not looking away, Billy Joe.

So, it's a well-made song. But why is it suddenly in my mind today? Ah!

"There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow.
And Momma said it was a shame about Billy Joe anyhow."

In my case, it's more like five more square feet, but yeah, something in my mind was comparing my trivial undertaking with this little tool, to the "five more acres" in the lower forty. I found myself pondering, what it must have been like, to bust sod behind a foot-deep plow hauled by a mule. All day, in the sun.

Eva Marie-

I have to say I'm not clear on the point you're making. You said:

"Men have the power to vote and turn this country around. The question is whether they’ll use it before it becomes irrelevant."

If more votes are needed from men in order to turn the country around, that would appear to indicate that the country is currently going in the wrong direction because of too many votes from women. And it's up to men to deal with this.

What happened to the "strong, empowered" woman who needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle? Is there a reason that women who understand the problem can't explain it to other women?

They don’t need a man, in particular. They need men generally. They vote themselves socialism, then use the state to steal the fruits of men’s labors, at the point of guns, in the hands of police, etc. this is a good part of the welfare state - women voting themselves enough welfare that they d ont have to work.

Bruce Hayden કહ્યું...

It looks like we survived May Day 2026. May Day is also International Workers’s Day. What’s funny is that real working people weren’t the ones protesting. Rather they were the retired, and unemployed and underemployed mostly millennials. Soros and NGO funded protesters. Led by octogenarian and late septuagenarian actors like Hanoi Jane, Beth Midler, and Bob DeNiro.

Hanoi Jane being one of the leaders gives away the game. May Day has long been the Day that communists show solidarity, and in communist countries show off their military might, with military parades, etc. Now, the solidarity is s hosing off how far the left here and in Europe has adopted communism. And who is funding this? Billionaires like the Soros family, but more importantly, by the biggest communist country - China. And China is doing this to destroy the west, and convert them to communism, to subordinate us to their dominance.

john mosby કહ્યું...

Growing up in Chicago in the 70s, May Day was an obscure joke. Commies would paste up flyers near university campuses, and some scalawag would paint "DARE TO WAVE THE RED FLAG" on an expressway overpass (which the Daley government would paint over within days - these were the days when, if you got a patronage job, you were expected to do the actual work). And that would be it.

What changed? Not the actual support of communism in the population. I am starting to like Fetterman's Law: billionaires attacking billionaires. CC, JSM

Something that might be relevant to your discussion.

If there is hope, wrote Winston, it lies in the proles.

If there was hope, it must lie in the proles, because only there in those swarming disregarded masses … could the force to destroy the Party ever be generated. The Party could not be overthrown from within … Rebellion meant a look in the eyes, an inflexion of the voice, at the most, an occasional whispered word. But the proles, if only they could somehow become conscious of their own strength, would have no need to conspire. They needed only to rise up and shake themselves like a horse shaking off flies. If they chose they could blow the Party to pieces tomorrow morning. Surely sooner or later it must occur to them to do it? And yet-!

The other thing here is that the polling for the GOP is likely to get much worse as we get closer to the election given that the economic effects of Trump's "Little Excursion™️" against Iran are only starting to hit the U.S. and likely won't recede for some time.

Republicans in the House were reportedly warning Trump that they could lose 60 seats based on current polling. That may end up being a best case scenario.

One factor to watch is the impact of gerrymandering. Under normal conditions the electoral maps are drawn up in such a way that helps Republicans win an outsized number of seats relative to their actual vote share. However, in a massive wave election, the gerrymanders could be a liability resulting in the Republicans losing more seats than they otherwise would have.

The one thing that might help the Republicans minimize damage is that the current leadership of the Democratic Party is also historically unpopular.
