"GLP-1 drugs may be rewiring circuits involved not only in appetite but in emotion, desire and beyond."

WaPo reports. Gift link. Excerpt:
Tens of millions of people are now taking the medications worldwide, turning what began as an obesity and diabetes treatment into what could be modern medicine’s largest unplanned neuroscience experiments. Scientists are studying GLP-1 drugs — medications that mimic the hormones involved in appetite, blood sugar and digestion — for how they affect not only eating behavior, but also addiction, cognition, neurodegeneration and even motivation and pleasure....
On social media and at doctor’s offices, some users have reported a type of brain fog and others something broader and harder to define: a strange emotional flattening. People describe less pleasure, less motivation, diminished interest in hobbies and even reduced sexual desire. Those accounts are beginning to raise deeper questions about what, exactly, these drugs are changing. If GLP-1s alter the brain systems involved in reward, craving and motivation, researchers wonder, where is the line between quieting a person’s destructive impulses and reshaping personality itself?...

It's not surprising that a drug that suppresses the appetite might not limit itself to the appetite for food.

The drive for easy solutions never ends. Those with pre-existing impulse control issues (e.g., obese) may have a net positive outcome? Living experimental condition.

Oh geez. The problem with this drug is that it quiets self-destructive impulses and therefore changes one's personality. Well then, it must be banned, and in place, perhaps offer MAID.

Anyone who reads the WAPO or NYTs to learn something is a fucking retard.

GLP1s have been around for decades and used in other countries. There is extensive research on them.

Yes they affect neuromodulators. This is known. They reduce spikes and drops in dopamine.

The US media and US health system is run by evil people who are lying to you about everything. They are dosing people with 10 times the normal dosage of GLP1s.

It is insane to watch this kind of crap wash up on a major publication. The journalists at the WAPO are morons. The people who read it and believe it are the dumbest people on the planet.

I wonder if there's an effect on ticks that bite those prescribed. Reduced sexual desire in ticks would be highly beneficial. Let's turn those Alpha-Gal Stacy ticks into Beta-Gal frigid feminazi ticks.

This story should be cross-indexed with stories about how much we are learning about gut bacteria and how they help regulate our bodies. Changing diets changes the gut. But to what effect?

Never forget doctors insisted stress and spicy foods caused ulcers, it was repeated as gospel, until a scientist proved the bacteria theory by giving himself a peptic ulcer. What are the other unknown unknowns?

Most of the side effects are from people taking 10 times the effective dose.

You can almost always get the benefits and fewer side effects if you take the doses that have been used in other countries for decades.

All drugs that affect the brain reshape personality to some extent. That's not a question. The questions that matter are, what do GLP-1s affect?, is the effect negative (and if so, how much)?, and are the effects reversible when the drug is discontinued or used at a lower dose?

The mention of 'emotional flattening' with GLP-1s is fascinating. It really highlights how interconnected our hormones and brain chemistry are. For managing such complex metabolic shifts, I’ve found that consulting experienced thyroid doctors near me is vital for comprehensive endocrine care.

In the sci-fi movie, Serenity, the Government does an experiment on a colonized planet to quell uprisings. They seeded the planet with a drug called PAX. It made the population so unmotivated that they stopped doing anything and almost all of them died of total apathy. But for a small percent of the population, it had the opposite effect and created cannibalistic, rage filled humans called Reavers.

GLP-1s are all well and good, but the GLP-3 (Retatrutide) is much more effective and it will be out soon. I tried it on a very low dose to get from my normal weight of 145 down to a very lean 135 because I thought it would give me a bit more speed with my running, and it worked a treat for dropping the last few pounds, but at the cost of raising my resting heart rate to 55 bpm and just making me feel a bit weaker when I ran. I assume this was just because I was undernourished and not directly because of the drug. It had no effect my libido or other appetites. If I were overweight I would absolutely take this stuff because it works, but for me it was a stupid idea.

Tom T, you don't need a doctor to get these drugs. They can be bought very inexpensively online with no prescription. Just look for peptide suppliers.

Easy peasy, Tom. Go on the Penn Gillette potato diet for 2 weeks. Follow it up by doing the Dr. Longo fast mimicking diet for 5 days. After that, go for A low carb high fiber diet with plenty of protein and lots of fermented foods tailored to your new calorie needs. If you plug in your height, your weight and your age and an honest assessment of your actual activity level, AI will give you a pretty accurate daily calories need to maintain your weight. Be patient. It'll take 2 or 3 months for your gut bacteria to improve and rebound. After that you won't have any more cravings as long as you don't binge sugar pasta pizza or alcohol.

Good point, Atlantic endocrinology.

Healthy gut microbiome is essential for proper thyroid function, largely because it helps convert the thyroid's primary hormone into its active form and supports the absorption of necessary nutrients. The gut-thyroid connection works in several specific ways:Hormone Conversion: The thyroid gland primarily produces the inactive hormone thyroxine (\(T_{4}\)). About \(20\%\) of this \(T_{4}\) is converted into the active form triiodothyronine (\(T_{3}\)) directly in the gut by intestinal bacteria.Nutrient Absorption: Healthy gut bacteria enhance the bioavailability of crucial micronutrients like iodine, selenium, and iron, which are the building blocks the thyroid needs to synthesize hormones in the first place.Immune Regulation: Roughly \(70\%\) of your immune system is housed in the gut. An unhealthy gut with inflammation or an impaired barrier (often called "leaky gut") can trigger autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto's disease. You can read more about this relationship through the detailed guide on the American Thyroid Association or the breakdown published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

There are cheaper options that will not have the same side effects.

Start with Yerba mate. Theobromine and theophylline are solid nueromodulator regulators. Caffeine is in there too but the theobromine flattens out the spikes in dopamine you get from caffeine alone.

The thing people need to start learning about is dopamine addiction and moderation.

What is it about food that makes you happy when you eat it? Why do you reach for that soda instead of going for a walk?

This is all controllable.

But the sugar factories and drug vendors and wheat/corn/big ag want everyone ignorant stupid and fat for obvious reasons.

Before going on GLP1s go look up the vagus nerve and the difference between the hormones released from your stomach and hormones released from your mouth.

You want the hormones released from your stomach when eating.

What's interesting about dopamine is that it is destructive when created via drugs, alcohol, binge eating and binge-like behavior like gambling doom scrolling etc. When you create high levels of dopamine via A proper diet, vigorous exercise accomplishing worthwhile goals. An active and healthy social life, it becomes a miracle cure for mental and physical health.

It's interesting that WaPo is treating this like it's a surprise, since the basic data along these lines was publicized during the clinical trials and was covered by other news organizations when the drugs were commercialized. It's also interesting that so many people have forgotten it, assuming that they heard about it a long time ago.

Going to push back on this a bit.

Our animal brain was not meant for high levels of dopamine.

We grew up as a species with misery pain hunger the occasional dead animal we just ran down to eat and copulation.

The only thing we had to give us more than a bunch of serotonin while chewing on some animal was sex and there probably wasn’t as much of that as people think.

We are built like most animals to be miserable and enjoy it and be addicted to having sex.

Animals don’t think about looking good or going to the gym or completing a project. These are all very very very new things to our brain chemistry.

Slaving away at a 9 to 5 in order to impress a chick being the norm and having her keep the cave clean til we got home is probably why we were so much happier in the 50s.

Then the 60s fucked everything up. I think free sex is more biologically damaging than you would think on the surface.

@Birches: My wife was getting a bit pudgy and it affected her self-image and self-confidence in the bedroom. She's felt friskier since she lost 40 lbs on the semaglutide. If it affects you the same way, you'll be skinnier AND hornier, and your husband will be in heaven.

You'll save money on booze and wine too, my wife has completely lost her taste for it since she started treatment.

That said, I concur that most men would agree that a plump but eager woman is way better than one who is skinny and frigid. You can always go off these things, I don't think the effects are permanent.

Does having high levels of natural dopamine due to a good diet exercise and a great attitude give hunter-gatherers an evolutionary advantage?

Yes, having high natural dopamine—driven by physical activity, an ancestral diet rich in tyrosine, and community connection—provided early humans with a significant survival edge. This Dopamine and the origins of human intelligence study outlines how dopaminergic expansion and physical exertion enabled endurance tracking and hunting on the savanna.Specific evolutionary advantages include:Endurance and Drive: Dopamine, along with endorphins, acts as the brain's internal reward. It provided the motivation and pain tolerance needed for "persistence hunting," which involved jogging after prey for hours The joy of steps: why humans are built to get a high from being on the move.Working Memory and Motor Planning: High dopamine circuits are responsible for cognitive flexibility, working memory, and tracking spatial environments Dopamine and the origins of human intelligence, which were vital for remembering where food and water were located across changing seasons.Resilience and Social Cohesion: A positive attitude and strong social structures in hunter-gatherer bands lowered stress hormones, further optimizing energy use and health What Can Hunter-Gatherers Teach Us about Staying Healthy?.

Hunter gatherer tribes were also egalitarian and meritocratic.

Then we domesticated grain and everything went to shit.

But it was the relative wealth of a few and role specialization that turned us into an eventual space faring race.

It was just hard on low status men.

I've been on Ozempic since Jan 3. I also use the NOOM app to track progress, track eating, etc. I have experienced very few side effects - no GI issues, got gas a few times, maybe one day of diarrhea which could have come from something I ate. I have more energy, more interest in life - virtually the total opposite of what was described. I have also lost 50 pounds. I know two others on GLP drugs. Both are very happy with the results. One did change from one drug to another as the first one he was on did upset his stomach. No issues after the change.
