I just want to say "thank you," to whoever recommended a stun gun to scare away mammals like stray dogs about a week or so ago. I bought a very simple one that looks like a pen. Haven't had to use it on a dog yet, but it drove the deer from my back yard from about 20 yards away today. Just the sound sent them running.

I'm surprised that I haven't seen any comments here about the new translation feature on X. It automatically translates posts into other languages and has been going for a few weeks now. My timeline exploded into a Japanese / American redneck BBQ culture lovefest. It has slowed down, but I'm now getting a lot of French, Dutch, and Arabic posts. It has widened my horizons and been very interesting. Apparently, Japanese meat suppliers are wondering why there is suddenly so much interest in brisket and pork ribs. The Japanese style of posting is very different from what Americans do.

SInce I'm on a Tom Waits kick, I read - or rather skimmed -through a biography of him. So much of it seemed familar. The nobody from California has some musical talent, gets discovered, signs with a record label, gets rich - he thinks. Oh, wait his great friend and record producer has been ripping him off. So, he has to go back and work hard to actually make some $$.

And of course, there's the usual drinking/drug problem which he eventually kicks.

I've come to conclusion that reading about musicians - at least the popular ones - is a waste of time. The interesting thing about them is the music. Obviously, classical musicians are different. Wagner, Richard Strauss, Mahler, etc. were interesting people in their own right. And you can say the same of Cole Porter or Richard Rodgers.

RCOCEAN II ने कहा…

Its hard to think of 50/60s American R/R or Popstar that wasn't ripped off by "Their great friend X" the record producer. From "The Colonel" and Elvis, to all the great black R&R pioneers to John Fogerty.

Dolly Parton stood up to Col. Tom Parker early in her career:

"According to Dolly herself, Elvis’ manager, Col. Tom Parker, negotiated Elvis right out of the song.

In 1974, Parton received the groundbreaking opportunity for Elvis to record “I Will Always Love You.” But Col. Tom Parker had a standing fee for Elvis doing any songwriters’ songs - that Elvis (and apparently Parker) would be given part of the publishing rights to the song. “Now, you know we have a rule that Elvis don’t record anything that we don’t take half the publishing,” said Parker…and I was really quiet,” Parton said in an interview with American Songwriter magazine. “I said, ‘Well, now it’s already been a hit. I wrote it and I’ve already published it, and this is the stuff I’m leaving for my family when I’m dead and gone. That money goes in for stuff for my brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews, so I can’t give up half the publishing,’ and he said ‘Well then, we can’t record it.’ I said, ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t give you the publishing.”

It took a hell of a lot for Parton, not quite the iconic figure that she is now, to stand in front of none other than the King of Rock and Roll (and his weaselly manager) and tell him flat out no, you’re NOT going to record my song. Of course, she would be vindicated in 1992 when Whitney Houston made it a part of the American songbook, and Parton has probably made tens if not hundreds of millions off her and Houston’s versions. So I’d say things worked out pretty well for Parton."

I closed the browser window that had the link and don't have the time to hunt for it now. Ugh

Before the web and self-publishing, Hollywood film and music economics involved selling your soul for fame. Given the costs of production and distribution, this lasted across the 20th century. They had the casting couch, the raw deals for Creedence Clearwater and many more, etc., etc. Harvey Weinstein was the last pure example of that culture, but only the last of many.

John Cougar Mellencamp is a good example of how tough that industry was: Young guy couldn't afford to print or distribute his music. Found a sleazy promoter who wouldn't take him unless he changed his name to "Cougar." Slowly, slowly after a solid career over years he returned to his actual name.

Now, throw in the emotional instability and drug abuse common in the creative class --> they sell their souls for a bowl of oatmeal and regret it only (when or if) they sober up. Aerosmith traded their fortune for a decade of intoxication, and may have died happy if not for being pulled out of drugs with the Run DMC collaboration.

Justabill ने कहा…

Jerry Reed also refused to give up any publishing rights to Elvis.

Its a mystery to me how "Music" which should be an escapist fun industry attracted so many Gangsters, Crooks, and Grifters. And how they got their hands on "the means of production" and couldn't resist trying to rip everyone else off, even when they were making money. It reminds me of Madoff, who was super-wealthy but couldn't resist defrauding investors.

I don't think many of the Blues, Rock and Rock, and Jazz artists of the 40s and 50s even knew what "Publishing rights" or "Copyrights" meant. They were just happy to get some money for playing music.

Best example of a guy who got screwed by someone in the record industry was Sixto Rodriguez. He was a Detroit singer-songwriter who released two albums in the early 1970s that barely sold in the US. He returned to his working-class life unaware that in apartheid-era South Africa his music had become a massive underground sensation, selling hundreds of thousands of copies. For nearly 30 years he had no idea of his fame, while rumors circulated in S.A. that he had died dramatically. In the late 1990s, two South African fans tracked him down, leading to huge sold-out tours in South Africa in the late 1990s. There’s a documentary Searching for Sugar Man available for rent on Amazon. Very much worth seeing.

“a firmament of parts” conjures up a junk yard, which still exist, but the sale of parts has mostly moved to the internet. eBay is the new 'firmament of parts'. Speaking of ordering stuff, I ordered something via Temu for the first time and my credit card fraud antenna was activated. I had to say YES to my bank asking if it was me. It was me. Let's hope the rest goes smoothly.

wildswan ने कहा…

The WHC shooter had a shotgun and a hand gun. Seems to me that he intended to blast his way through the dinner-goers until he got close to Trump Then he'd use the hand gun. He was trying to assassinate Trump, yes, but he didn't have careful Day-of-the-Jackal-type plan to assassinate one person. He planned a massacre in the midst of which he'd get to Trump. But why did he think that he was morally justified in a massacre? He thought that way because the media taught him to think that Trump was so evil it didn't matter who you killed trying to get to him. And so he shows up ready to slaughter his way through the media to get to Trump. What goes around, comes around.

Readering @9:16 - I think someone here did allude to the capacity of the ballroom versus the number of event attendees last night. And indeed that does mean that THIS event couldn't have been held there (and another ballroom denier pointed out, again correctly, that it is unlikely they'd be renting it out for private events in any case).

But the security problems of a venue like this seem to me to be dwarfed by those that are simply unavoidable when you hold an event in a tent, so the arguments for the ballroom as a significantly more secure venue for the events it WILL house remain valid, it seems to me. So then the critique comes down to Trump's (inappropriately, according to the critics) taking a few seconds last night to point out that the ballroom will be a much more secure venue, which - I think it might have been Howard, herein, who called THAT correctly: Always Be Closing.

Eva Marie ने कहा…

'Twas I, but I was not arguing against the need for the WH ballroom. The shooting at the Hilton highlights the need for a more secure WH venue for events held there, given the number of crazy leftists out there who will try anything. But a President is going to be at other venues and needs more competent security than was in place at the Hilton. Trump and others were just lucky that this was one crazy and not ten or twenty rushing the Hilton ballroom.

I got my wife a zapper for Christmas a few years ago because she's not comfortable carrying a gun. (and while she's had some training, I'm not comfortable with her carrying a gun, either.)

Not too long ago, there was a character approaching her in a parking lot. Not yet threatening, but approaching.

She simply pulled out the zapper, hit the buzz - and according to her - the guy suddenly pretended to be interested in something else.

But when O’Donnell, during an her "60 Minute" interview recorded at the White House on Sunday, quoted from the accused gunman Cole Allen’s apparent manifesto — “I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes,” she read — Trump, who’d been relatively subdued in his responses, flashed a familiar anger.

“I was waiting for you to read that because I knew you would, because you’re horrible people. Horrible people,” Trump said. “Yeah, he did write that. I’m not a rapist. I didn’t rape anybody.”

O’Donnell interjected, “Oh, do you think he was referring to you?”

On Tuesday, May 12, 2023, the Manhattan jury of nine men and three women found the former president liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll and awarded Carroll $5 million in damages. In August 2023, Judge Kaplan dismissed a countersuit and wrote that Carroll's accusation of rape is "substantially true". $88 million was added to the judge's award.

The 1990 Divorce between Donald Trump and Ivana Trump was granted on the grounds of cruel and inhumane treatment but the two may have reached a settlement but Ivanka used the word "rape" in court. Nearly 3 decades later, it is still being talked about. One big reason is the divorce involves a sexual assault accusation Ivana made against Donald. Ivana has since walked back on those comments and even endorsed Trump for President, but now the New York Times has requested that the New York Supreme Court unseal Trump’s divorce records to set the record straight.

David Stom at HotAir has a long posting on the third assassination attempt on Donald Trump. About two-thirds the way in he quotes a couple of tweets from two attendees who indicate they were verbally and physically assaulted by the protestors outside the event. There were a whole lotta lefty nerds really upset that Trump was going to be allowed to attend nerdprom (after complaining for years that he wouldn't) and I think I read something to the effect that Cole had a similar view that anybody willing to break bread with Trump was complicit in his (supposed) corruption. That seems to be implied by the often quoted sentence from his manifesto.

An aside, in the same section, those same attendees noticed three teen-age girls scrolling social media reports of the assassination attempt as they made their way out of the Hilton and expressing regret Trump hadn't been killed.

As a former Marathon runner I find this amazing but like all things(the mile) is was due to be broken. 1ST 2ND AND 3RD amazing,,,Kenyan runner Sebastian Sawe obliterated the world record at the London Marathon on Sunday with a scorching-fast time of 1:59:30, reseting the limits of human endurance and speed. He became the first person to break the two-hour barrier in an official race and ran the fastest marathon time in recorded history, besting Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 by over a minute and Eliud Kipchoge’s INEOS exhibition from 2019, the only other instance of anyone running under two hours at the distance conducted under controlled conditions, by 10 seconds.
Sawe wasn’t the only runner to make history in London. He was followed by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, who crossed the line in 1:59:41. The third-place finisher, Ugandan Jacob Kiplimo, also bested the previous world-record time at 2:00:28.

It's about the red/orange/yellow orb itself. To me, it's more interesting when I "know it's there" v. actually seeing it, i.e., an artfully posed, framed and lit shot of a 'Camel Toe' might kindle desire while a brightly lit ECU of a Vulva will more likely have the opposite effect.

Just sayin'. Carry on :-)
