"On this occasion, I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing, Mr. President..."

"And I'm sorry to say that we British of course made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814."

It's funny now.

Who will be around in 2213 to joke about the destruction of the World Trade Center?

I see the King's comments about burning down the White House as an echo of Trump's comments about Pearl Harbor.

I don't see the Trade Center massacre as ever being fodder for mirth between Americans and Islamic radicals.

Who will be around in 2213 to joke about the destruction of the World Trade Center? Probably the mullah in charge of West Pakistan (the former Great Britain).

Madonna, circa 2017, what say you about the destruction of the White House?

Is that really an accurate equivalence, moral or otherwise?

Chuck is just mad. What Trump did in Iran has done more to emasculate the British than any other group on the planet. Lloyds of London is the biggest loser of the last several months.

Charles is just a little bitch and so is this country.

Christopher B કહ્યું...

I think the joking is possible because the War of 1812 is recognized as a bit absurd by both sides, and is certainly far overshadowed by other conflicts.

No, you don't see it correctly. These is no connection between the two events.

To be fair, when the British burned the White House it was uniformed troops and they torched a government building after everyone had fled. The WTC was non-uniformed men who intentionally targeted civilians. I don't see anyone making quips similar to this about the WTC a century from now.

And yet, the White House, and our Republic, abide. Can HRH Charles say the same?

Well, you used more words. I guess that's a step in the right direction.

BTW, the British burning of the White House was retaliation for our burning Government buildings in Canada. And further, we declared war on the British in 1812. Partly it was over their impressing American sailors. But it was mostly because we wanted to steal Canada. Thank God that failed. Imagine us being burdened with Quebec for 200 years.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

Of course, someone wrote it for him, but Charles delivery was excellent. Brit humor at its best.

RCOCEAN II કહ્યું...

Neither the British nor ourselves hold grudges. We don't expect everyone to remember. Or to get upset at things that happened in the past. We move on.

Imagine if Americans in 2026 were running around saying "Never Again" any time some one mentioned burning the White House. Or put people in jail for "Questioning the Burning".

The fact that
@realDonaldTrump
had Revolutionary War soldiers in full colonial uniform on parade when King Charles arrived at the White House today on the 250th anniversary of American independence is legendary.

Peak 1776 energy. No notes.

In 1814, the British burned DC. And to think, after all this time, we never had the decency to thank them.

A century from now? Shit, I think if 9/11 happened today, Jon Stewart would be on television that night cracking one-liners about the people jumping from the burning buildings. Hilarious! After all, in the minds of Democrat Party members, they were just "Little Eichmanns".

Sometimes you see something like this and you just realize: King Charles is doing a very nice job reminding us that Britain has a new prime minister every 18 seconds, most of them become immediately unpopular and fail to deliver much, and there's relevance in taking a longer term view in terms of country-level relationship and dynamics. And that Keir Starmer is an ass.

Great speech, well delivered, and Trump appreciates class, humor, and grace even while he himself rarely demonstrates two of those characteristics.

hombre કહ્યું...

Sorry. That was President Mohammed Jeffries.

The Jews, of course.

Just kidding! The Jews, like the rest of us, will have long been assimilated into the proletariat of the Sino-American Peoples Republic, and divisive fake history like Tianamin Square and 9/11 will have been erased from the history books. Persistent troublesome sects like Islamists will have suddenly and quietly decided to become organ donors.

No one died when the White House was torched by the British in 1814. Hence, any comparison to the destruction of the World Trade Center with the deaths of thousands of people in 2001 is complete nonsense.

British humor can slip in the knife without the subject even realizing they have been cut, such as here comparing Trump tearing down the East Wing to the British sacking Washington, DC and burning down the White House.

I also loved the joke, “if it weren’t for us, you’d be speaking French” joke, a sly reference to the mother country coming to the aid of its America colonies in the French and Indian War. It may also be a tell that, deep down, Brits think it ungrateful we revolted a dozen years later.

I suspect the Brit’s also feel Trump ungrateful for pulling back from the alliance after they gave him Brexit in his first term.

Oh so King Charles is a snarky teenage girl, laughing up his sleeve at "The Yanks". Teehee, Trump thinks I'm making a clever joke - but its really a snark about his real estate development. Teehee.

The British had agreed to stop impressing sailors from American ships prior to war being declared.

"The British had agreed to stop impressing sailors from American ships prior to war being declared."

True, and that has an odd symmetry with how the war ended--with Jackson's victory at New Orleans occurring after peace terms had been agreed (but not ratified).

I have begun to think that the French Rev and Empire are what kept the Brits from a return match to squash the new republic like a bug. Then again, the same dynamic of Franco-British animosity might have operated just as it did in 1776-1783 even if the Bourbons kept the throne.
