I am reading all the comments from people attended the White House Correspondence dinner. Who didn’t attend the dinner? It seems every pol, hack, writer, comic, cling-on east of the Mississippi was there.
It’s been reported Brian Stelter has applied for a Purple Heart for PTSD.
So the mentalist who was performing at the WHCD at the time the assassination attempt occurred was scheduled to be on Kimmel's show tonight. Not any more. Wonder how that went down.
Trump signed an Ex Order paying them, while everybody waits for the Dems to wake up to the fact that no matter what happens, their favorability is not coming back while Trump is in the White House. They are in the shit house for the duration.
Even Fox now is trying to say, in a friendly way, that the correspondents' dinner was under-protected. Personalities like (Lisa) Kennedy and Buck Sexton who were there are talking about how easy it was to get in and all over the hotel, right up to the metal detectors. Hannity and some of the talking heads are saying it should have been an NSSE - National Security Special Event, like the conventions. Bringing up Allen's renting a room in the Hilton, then using it to get ready for his attack, then walk down the stairwells to the ballroom area. Speculating that if there had been not just one Caltech weirdo, but five or more IRGC-recruited dudes with grenades or suicide vests, the bumrush technique would have worked.
Yeah, all that is true. But if you start putting NSSE-style protections in place for an event like this, when do you stop? Always a judgment call. I like my idea of building more physical obstacles rather than making agents play human Pong, trying to intercept the guy. CC, JSM
Melania and Camilla both looked and acted briliantly. If I was British and older, I'd definitely wear her suit with the subdued floral stripes and perfect darts. It's especially age-appropriate. And very lovely. I'm sure each flower has an historic meaning. She married that dolt and is more than making a go for it. Her wedding dress and especially the hat were also classy. She is filling the role she chose modestly.
Oz Perelman was able to predict the name of Karoline Leavitt's baby, but he wasn't able to predict a dude was about to come running at them with a shotgun? Oy. CC, JSM
Also everyone is forgetting that Trump didn't announce he was attending the dinner until March 2. That's really not enough time to plan an NSSE. And definitely not enough time to find another venue if, as some of the talking heads suggested, the USSS inspected the Hilton and said 'nah, this will not work.' Basically the event was planned as President-less, and then all of a sudden the USSS was required to bolt security onto arrangements that could not be changed.
And it's still not in the USSS mindset to turn to the President and say "look, sir, if you go there, you're going to get killed. I can't stop you from going, but you can't make me take you there. Here's all my government property. Enjoy the dinner." I don't think it will ever be, and it probably shouldn't. But you also can't blame the USSS for trying to sprinkle sugar on the crap sandwich. CC, JSM
But yes, I have been in most of the DC ballrooms and your assessment is accurate. Kind of supports my point that there's not much you can do unless you take over the entire hotel. Even the DC Convention Center wasn't really built with security in mind. CC, JSM
I assume the reason that the entire GOP and MAGA world is slavishly pushing the ballroom nonsense is not that they agree that the ballroom is actually important but they understand Trump is flailing and needs a win, even a pathetic one.
On Gutfeld, Kennedy just copped to swiping three bottles of champagne from the dinner as she left. She said the networks pay for all the champagne ahead of time, so it's not stealing. She then distributed it to other frazzled survivors. CC, JSM
Before the battle of Omdurman, young Churchill went over to a Royal Navy gunboat in the Nile. The officers were cooling champagne bottles in the river, and they gave him one. Same sort of thing. CC, JSM
I assume the reason that the entire GOP and MAGA world is slavishly pushing the ballroom nonsense is not that they agree that the ballroom is actually important
What's the "ballroom nonsense"? Are you trying to contend that a tent is more secure than a purpose-built building? That a tent and latrines is the more dignified option? That the United States should be proud to ask guests at major state events to traipse across wet grass to reach their seats?
Or is the problem that this president's success in seeking private donations for a major public works project highlights the lies that prior presidents both told and believed about the need for tax money for such things? Sort of like the lies they both told and believed about closing the border, for instance?
You never know with baseball. The Red Sox started the season in one of their worst funks ever, with 9W and 17L. Dropping 3 in a row (at home) against their eternal rivals, the NY Yankees. A blow to Red Sox Nation. So, last Friday night, after the teams 4th consecutive loss, the front office fired the manager and his handpicked coaches. Saturday, the Sox scored 17 runs and won two more games after that. The shakeup worked. 😲
I think they just read off whatever powerpoint is sent to their inbox without much thinking involved. The Iran shock is going to drive inflation sky high, and ballroom talk will be a negative.
Meanwhile -- Republicans are preparing another bailout for farmers using taxpayer dollars, aimed at addressing the increased costs and trade disruptions from Trump’s tariffs and his war. Taxpayers are effectively subsidizing the fallout from these policies
If you are a small business owner, work for a small business or know a small business owner you might want to know that websites have to be ADA compliant - for the sight and hearing impaired. If your business is in California this is particularly important. In CA lawsuits mills are particularly predatory. But it’s important in other states as well. For details just ask your friendly AI. This only applies to business and not personal sites.
According to Rod Dreher this is a world we've lost:
"It’s a world in which Jew-haters, neo-Nazis, and bloodthirsty Communists remain firmly on the margins, not regularized by mainstream figures and publications with massive platforms. It’s a world where you can go to a cocktail party in the nation’s capital and never once hear a Holocaust joke.
It’s a world in which conservatives are morally decent and liberals are not maniacs who want to kill or maim the rest of us".
LOL - this is Mr. True Christian Conservative. Only Rod could turn another Leftwing assassination attempt on Trump into an attack on phantom "Neo-Nazis" and people making Holocaust jokes.
LOL. This is how you know it’s cut and paste or AI generated because there’s absolutely no sense of how silly that statement is, coming from someone who supports the left.
He later claims that Republicans and Democrats wont attack the "extremists" on "their side". LOL - that's all the Republicans want to do. They love attacking anyone on their Right, and getting that sweet MSM attention and approval.
The problem which Rod Dreher always wants to fuzz up and obfuscate is this: The problem is the Democrats. They have a motto "No enemey to the Left" and as shown by the Kimmel joke (and lack of concern and sympathy for the Trump adminstration figures being targeted for violence) have zero desire to attack "their side".
That's the main problem. But Rod wants to talk about Weimar germany and "nazis" when the we're really in 1936 Spain.
"there’s absolutely no sense of how silly that statement is, coming from someone who supports the left."
No kidding. Where was this concern for the taxpayer while millions of illegal aliens were allowed to stream across the border and given who knows how much free (read: taxpayer paid-for) stuff?
Yeah, all that is true. But if you start putting NSSE-style protections in place for an event like this, when do you stop? Always a judgment call. I like my idea of building more physical obstacles rather than making agents play human Pong, trying to intercept the guy. CC, JSM
We shouldn't have to have the president under constant threat of being killed by Democrat traitors.
The problem isn't that the President isn't protected well enough.
The problem is the Democrat traitors.
They need to be dealt with. There is no reason to let them keep acting like this.
Take your damn talking points and shove them up your ass. You have nothing substantive to contribute. Anyone can take any issue and find a negative thing to say about it, it does not show intelligence or skill. You and your ilk are evil. You root for us to lose so you can say how bad America is. I am amazed that you could even show up and say such asinine shit day after day with no idea just how irrelevant and pointless it is. You pretend that your side is angelic while ignoring the violence, and hate that your side spews regularly, the spying, the illegal activity, the the eliminative rhetoric. You offer nothing for this blog but pointless ramblings, and you offer nothing for this country but destruction and violence. You have no vison but hate, not purpose but division. Go away.
I don’t believe it to be irrational or unreasonable to conclude that a certain number of commentators and comments on the high traffic blogs in the US are foreign intel ops, just stirring up dissension and division to weaken our democracy and social fabric.
"I assume the reason that the entire GOP and MAGA world is slavishly pushing the ballroom nonsense is not that they agree that the ballroom is actually important."
I assume the reason that KKKak keeps ignoring and staying silent (like every other leftist) about rapist Eric Swalwell is that his own web browser cache has some media depicting his favorite "cuddle with a struggle" pastime...
Andrew Kolvet @AndrewKolvet · 9h Greg Gutfeld just delivered the single most succinct and cutting indictment of the leftwing media's complicity in Saturday's WHCD attack:
"This guy did hear voices. They were Ted Lieu's, they were Brandon Johnson's, they were CNN's, they were The View, they were MS NOW."
"I think this is a helpful assassination attempt because it is the first one that shows you can be radicalized by liberal smugness."
"He wasn't a crank. He was not deranged. Don't buy into that narrative ... He was just following orders."

If the media and democrats don’t like the ballroom, I’m sure a tent and several latrines could be set up just for them at any WH event once the ballroom is built.

I also don’t believe it to be irrational or unreasonable to believe they're just garden-variety assholes.
This shooting strikes me as very unusual though on the surface it is almost banal - if you can use that word about attempted assassination. Banal. I'm 100% in agreement with those commenters who are pointing out that this shooter got his manifesto points off liberal talking-heads talking-points. Same old, same old and, just as conservatives predicted, finally, deadly. Deadly, The man had a shotgun which was going to blast everyone in his path once he got to the dining room. Who was in his path? The media. All those yappy, TV faces, blasted with scatter shot. Made as ugly as the "narratives" they've been telling. And the media can't discuss their danger. The media keep talking about how an assassin was going after Trump - again. But this assassin was ready to use a shotgun; thus he was ready to massacre anyone in his path; at the White House Correspondents dinner those in his path would be mainly media. So this is a different kind of assassination attempt. But an attempted assassination along with an attempted media massacre is the final, logical outcome of the anarchistic, destructive narratives the media's been pushing. The media have created a man ready to shoot everyone. Secret Service, Cabinet members, President and Vice-President, yes but also Jake Tapper. He was there and in as much danger as JD Vance; Brian Stelter was there and in as much danger as Pete Hegseth. Evil. Media figures in as much danger as Donald Trump! In danger! from a man who believed everything they said and who consequently would shoot them down if they got in his way. The banality of evil.
Dave Can you explain what is happening to you in Oklahoma. The only explanation I've seen offered was behind a paywall, so I didn't see it. I'm assuming you've been effectively criticizing a Dem power structure and are now are enmeshed in some sort of Empire Strikes Back scenario. Perhaps for legal reasons you can't characterize or discuss the actual issue. But maybe you could link to an article on topic but not directly discussing whatever you can't discuss? Sonetimes people get caught in advanced issues, that is, issues or complications which are so new that they seem unbelievable. But then it turns out that many others are caught in similar situations and so understanding advances. So that's why I'd like to know what is happening - it might be happening to a lot of people and, of course, also I wish you well but have no idea what to do.
"Is it true that all the action/shooting was on a different floor than where the dinner was?"
Yes, but there was an open staircase down to the ballroom level. Allen had made it to the top of that staircase when he was stopped. This WaPo link might work.
I wish I lived in OK because then maybe my First Amendment rights would be respected.
Below is something I wrote for my OPPD Director’s race campaign page. The two attorneys who are out to get revenge on me are John Thomas and Hanna Jensen. They follow me here on the Althouse blog.
One thing not written below is that these two members of the Nebraska Bar did not file a single criminal charge against a speeding driver who hit - and nearly killed - two Crofton school girls in a marked crosswalk.
I have a very low personal and professional opinion of attorneys John Thomas and Hanna Jensen.
I will file a public Answer and it will contain the info below.
DDB
Sarpy County voters.
You may have read a story about me in the Omaha World-Herald about a grievance filed against me by the Counsel for Discipline.
It boils down to the fact that I criticized the Knox County Sheriff, an elected official, about his failure to do his job and that failure presented a substantial risk to public safety.
The Sheriff is not in compliance with an 1866 Nebraska law that uses the word "shall" four times and mandates that all deputies sign a statutory oath and that it be filed with the County Clerk.
The upshot of this failure to comply with NE law is that arrests made by Knox County deputies, in my legal opinion, are not authorized and that people arrested by deputies could file a motion to dismiss.
This very defense worked for the former FBI director and current AG of the state of NY. Their defense lawyer, the great Abe Lowell, filed a motion to dismiss alleging that the US Attorney was not properly appointed. A federal judge dismissed the two cases.
Both the Sheriff and two attorneys in the Knox County Attorney's office are mad at me. I learned, during my appointment as Special Knox County Attorney, that the Sheriff's office was listening in on the closed and private sessions of the Knox County Board. This was made possible because the then deputy Knox County Attorney cancelled a $29 privacy switch. I found that she and her law partner lied to me, under oath, as part of my investigation. As I'm required to do, I reported their dishonesty to the Counsel for Discipline.
I continue to defend Knox County in a federal case in which Big Wind wants to install 155 wind turbines in Knox County. So far, I've been very successful. But I know for a fact that the former Knox County Attorney favors wind energy. He's mad about me on that issue too.
I'm totally innocent. I have a First Amendment right to speak and write about elected officials. The fact that the Sheriff wasn't in compliance with NE law is public information. Any criminal defense attorney could have checked with the County Clerk about the filing of the deputies' oaths. I also had the written consent of the Board of Supervisors to do what I did.
I was so concerned about this public safety problem that I contacted four county attorneys that I know and told them to check the records with the County Clerk.
Two lawyers are trying to get revenge on me. One attorney lost his job and the other attorney was suspended for two years. Another thing you should know is that the attorneys drafted the grievance against me but had the Sheriff sign it as if it was his own work-product.
Politics can be a dirty business. But I'm confident that I will be fully exonerated.
wildswan, your question about Dave Begley's situation is an important one. Regardless of the particular details in his case, I believe it's yet another case of those in government trying to outlaw private citizens from public comments (and thus, exposure) of their negligence, dereliction of duty, or outright criminality/fraud. The parties in power are trying to intimidate and ultimately stop citizens from exercising their free speech rights in creating such exposure.
The Nick Shirley case in California is a perfect example of this, where the State itself is attempting to pass laws to criminalize such exposure of their fraud. We need to strongly push back and to support legitimate whistleblowers.
I created “chaos” in Knox County because I wrote on FB that the Sheriff is “shockingly incompetent” and that people arrested by a Knox County deputy potentially had a get-out-jail free card. That’s it.
Chaos! Exercising my First Amendment right to criticize an elected official has resulted in a raft of grief and expense for me. I still can’t believe this.
"...increased costs and trade disruptions from Trump's tariffs..."
I'm old enough to remember when Trump's tariffs were going to crash the stock market. Kak's PowerPoint was harping on it daily. We all know how things have gone since then.
I also recall that soybean prices were a yuge issue. Remember that, Kak? Trump's tariffs were going to make soybean prices skyrocket, or plunge, or go sideways, or otherwise cause major chaos and disruption, etc.
So I checked on what has happened to soybean prices since March of 2025. Guess what?
They have bounced around between $400 and $475, and are currently 18% higher than in March 2025. But in March of 2024 the price was $487; in March of 2023 the price was $628, and in March of 2022 the price was $720.
Is it good news for farmers that soybean prices are up or down? Or bad? Is it good for consumers? (It would certainly seem that prices coming down from $720 to $470 would be good for consumers and bad for farmers, but what do I know?)
I don't know. What I do know is that commodities prices change constantly due to all sorts of factors. And that Kak and his PowerPoint are just spewing whatever BS comes to hand.
“ A social studies teacher at Kaukauna High School (Wisconsin) has been caught openly lamenting that the latest deranged assassin didn’t manage to take out President Donald Trump.”
This is what he wrote on X: “ I am not impressed with recent presidential assassins. It’s f-king embarrassing. Booth, Guiteau, Czolgosz, Oswald must all be spinning in their graves! MAGAA (make Americans great assassins again)! Sad!”
"His manifesto is also too literate and not "Antifa" enough for anything MAGA types would know how to write."
"The ballroom stuff is just a political party pushing a coordinated message to achieve a tangible goal, something that will be unfamiliar for the mostly-Democratic members here. Trump said make this about the ballroom and they did."
Kyle Becker @kylenabecker · 54m Can you imagine what would happen if a conservative had made a similar 'joke' about Barack Obama as Jimmy Kimmel did about Donald Trump?
We don't have to imagine. Because in 2013, a RODEO CLOWN simply wore a Barack Obama mask and the announcer joked about him running from a bull.
That was enough to become a "national scandal."
Here is what happened to that clown:
• The clown was permanently banned from performing at the Missouri State Fair.
• The Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association (which ran the event) issued a public apology, and its president faced backlash (he later resigned amid the fallout).
• Fair officials required sensitivity training for future events and reviewed their contract with the association.
• The clown reported receiving death threats and significant public backlash; he later petitioned (unsuccessfully) to lift the ban.
Today's coffee & covid: "...But if you turn off an Iranian oil well, the entire apparatus seizes up. The subterranean pressure collapses, the machinery breaks down, and the well can never be restarted...."
Ugh. Wrong, all wrong. Think of an oil or gas well as a very straight garden hose. At the wall spigot, the pressure is usually on the order of 30 psi. What is the pressure at the open end, when the water is running wide open? 0 psi, or atmospheric pressure. Where did the 30 psig go to? It was lost due to friction, the friction of the water moving through the hose.
Same is true of the well. The highest pressure in the well is at the sandface. As soon as production starts, the reservoir begins to draw down. Over the life of the well, pressure depletes from the reservoir, but not instantaneously, throughout. A pressure gradient establishes itself, moving outward from the well over time. Shut the well in, at any time, and the pressure begins normalize within the reservoir. The well testers call this a pressure buildup, and measure it exactingly - it's a method of characterizing the reservoir's extent and flow potential. Not a collapse.
The Iranians are just continuing to buy time, stockpiling as much oil as they possibly can, so they can recover more quickly when the blockade ends. Nothing more. Their production is not put at risk by shutting the wells in.
Sorry I mixed Oklahoma and Nebraska. In Dave's case, I just wonder if there is some reason why the oath was not being administered - such as, to take a ridiculous possibility, the fact that some people are adhering to Turtle Nation and don't want to swear allegiance to American procedures. And whether this indifference to required oaths is widespread.

“ Taxpayers are effectively subsidizing the fallout from these policies”

Go away.

Greg Gutfeld just delivered the single most succinct and cutting indictment of the leftwing media's complicity in Saturday's WHCD attack:
"This guy did hear voices. They were Ted Lieu's, they were Brandon Johnson's, they were CNN's, they were The View, they were MS NOW."
"I think this is a helpful assassination attempt because it is the first one that shows you can be radicalized by liberal smugness."
"He wasn't a crank. He was not deranged. Don't buy into that narrative ... He was just following orders."
Greg nails it.

I think I'm sophisticated 'cause I'm living my life
Like a good homo sapiens
But all around me everybody's multiplying and
They're walking round like flies man
So I'm no better than the animals sitting
In the cages in the zoo man
'Cause compared to the flowers and the birds and the trees
I am an apeman
I think I'm so educated and I'm so civilized
'Cause I'm a strict vegetarian
But with the over-population and inflation and starvation
And the crazy politicians
I don't feel safe in this world no more
I don't want to die in a nuclear war
I want to sail away to a distant shore and make like an apeman
I'm an apeman, I'm an ape, apeman, oh I'm an apeman
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voodoo man, oh I'm an apeman
'Cause compared to the sun that sits in the sky
Compared to the clouds as they roll by
Compared to the bugs and the spiders and flies I am an apeman
In man's evolution he's created the city
And the motor traffic rumble
But give me half a chance and I'd be taking off my clothes
And living in the jungle
'Cause the only time that I feel at ease
Is swinging up and down in the coconut trees
Oh what a life of luxury to be like an apeman
I'm an apeman, I'm an ape, apeman, oh I'm an apeman
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voodoo man, oh I'm an apeman
I look out the window but I can't see the sky
The air pollution is a-fogging eyes
I want to get out of this city alive and make like an apeman
Oh come on and love me, be my apeman girl
And we'll be so happy in my apeman world
I'm an apeman, I'm an ape, apeman, oh I'm an apeman
I'm a King Kong man, I'm a voodoo man, oh I'm an apeman
I'll be your Tarzan, you'll be my Jane
I'll keep you warm and you'll keep me sane
We'll sit in the trees and eat bananas all day, just like an apeman
I'm an apeman, I'm an ape, apeman, oh I'm an apeman

If the media and democrats don’t like the ballroom, I’m sure a tent and several latrines could be set up just for them at any WH event once the ballroom is built.
Is it true that all the action/shooting was on a different floor than where the dinner was?
I don’t believe it to be irrational or unreasonable to conclude that a certain number of commentators and comments on the high traffic blogs in the US are foreign intel ops, just stirring up dissension and division to weaken our democracy and social fabric.
I don’t believe it to be irrational or unreasonable to come to that conclusion.

Can you explain what is happening to you in Oklahoma.
Heh heh heh...

“the air pollution is a-foggin’ up my eyes” is what I remember.
wildswan, your question about Dave Begley's situation is an important one.
Keep fighting, Dave!
That is good, wendybar. This situation has been a logical outgrowth/result of manipulation and Commie politics.

But in March of 2024 the price was $487; in March of 2023 the price was $628, and in March of 2022 the price was $720.
https://ycharts.com/indicators/us_soybean_price_world_bank#/
Is it good news for farmers that soybean prices are up or down? Or bad? Is it good for consumers? (It would certainly seem that prices coming down from $720 to $470 would be good for consumers and bad for farmers, but what do I know?)
I don't know. What I do know is that commodities prices change constantly due to all sorts of factors. And that Kak and his PowerPoint are just spewing whatever BS comes to hand.

Can you imagine what would happen if a conservative had made a similar 'joke' about Barack Obama as Jimmy Kimmel did about Donald Trump?
Where was the "he's just a comedian" crowd then?
"He's just a comedian."

Good luck on this, Dave.
If you need some things,"taken care of", I know some guys.
