"The right to publicly carry weapons is a centerpiece of Second Amendment advocacy and has emerged as a key issue in the shooting of 37-year-old ICU nurse Alex Pretti...."

"Bill Essayli, Los Angeles' top federal prosecutor and a Trump ally, received fierce blowback from gun-rights groups over his Saturday claim that there is a 'high likelihood' law enforcement will be 'legally justified' in shooting someone who approaches them with a gun. The National Rifle Association responded on X that this sentiment was 'dangerous and wrong.' Gun Owners of America condemned Essayli's statement, writing that the Second Amendment 'protects Americans' right to bear arms while protesting—a right the federal government must not infringe upon.' Essayli claimed that condemnation 'mischaracterize[d]' his statement...."

From "Gun rights groups challenge shooting of legally armed Minneapolis man" (Axios).

And here's Jonathan Chait, in "What MAGA Really Thinks of the Second Amendment/Now Americans know" (The Atlantic)(gift link).
Until very recently, conservative rhetoric has valorized gun ownership as a bulwark against tyrannical government, to the point of fetishization. Conservatives defended Kyle Rittenhouse as a hero for bringing a rifle to a chaotic protest in Wisconsin during the summer of 2020, as well as armed bands of protesters who marched into state capitol buildings during the COVID lockdowns....
The administration’s immediate use of the terrorist label should be understood not just as a hyperbolic accusation of intent, but as an umbrella term it applies to political opposition generally.... The administration’s allies, not all of whom wish to directly endorse summary executions, have played along with his logic, treating protesters’ reaction to the crackdown as though it were its cause....
Democratic Party leaders in the state have urged residents to record activity in order to produce a record of these acts. That is why Pretti was holding his phone, not his gun, when he intervened to protect a woman being tear-gassed by CBP agents, who then killed him.

The phone, not the gun, is the weapon the administration fears....

"The truth is a majority of Americans want illegal aliens deported and Democrats are dependent on illegal alien voters and census counts."

Yes we do.

And Yes. Pretti found out you don't fuck around with a loaded gun when the people who you are protesting are better armed than you are. He did something very stupid and paid for it with his life. As stupid people often do.

The protocol when confronted by the police and you are carrying a weapon is to inform the police that you are armed and have a permit. They will ask you to keep your hands in plain sight.

Stephen you seem to have a problem with the term "Illegal". They aren't law abiding if they are illegal.
Crime has dropped to such a degree we are experiencing crime at a level not seen since 1900. What is the one variable that's changed?

I’m old enough to remember the Democratic National Convention having a zone where you were allowed to protest and they made it far away from anything that would disrupt the convention.

Now Minneapolis has a self declared autonomous zone. The people claiming it as their own territory proudly admit they’ll use violence including murder against anyone that doesn’t immediately conform to their will. If Walz or Frey really opposed not just the tactics but purpose of ICE, why do they tolerate these people running this autonomous zone?

I’m failing to see the grassroots nature of these protest. They seem to be by people who only find their arguments convenient in the moment rather than defending long held beliefs.

Leland, I can’t speak about Minnesota in general or even much besides S Mpls, but these are grassroots protests here. If you were here you would know it.

Howard projecting. He joins his people in celebrating the death because it can be used against his enemies. Maybe Howard will get lucky today and ICE will kill someone else.”

Exactly. It is all about political power. And testing out their riot mechanisms. The democrats will riot every year before elections from now on if a republican is in office. They are honing their craft.

How disgraceful that the corrupt Walz regime forces the National Guard to serve milk and cookies to the neo-Nazi leftists who are harassing Federal ICE agents. on demand and on command.

People here illegally - often partaking in the Democratic's illegal tax payer fraud schemes - must be protected by the corrupt left's self-anointed street thug anti-democratic army.

And should they come into contact with law enforcement, they become the most docile, compliant, and courteous people, making clear they are armed and assisting the officer in safely disarming them. They do not conceal their weapon from the police, nor do they engage in conflict with them while concealing their weapon.

Exactly. I've interacted with traffic cops multiple times over the years while armed. The first thing I say after giving them my documents, including the CCW, is "Sir there is a [black 9mm pistol/silver snubnose revolver/AR15 rifle/etc.] located [on my right hip/in the armrest beside me/in the glovebox/in a case on the back seat/etc]. What would you like me to do?" I keep both hands on the steering wheel, with the interior light on if it's at night, and I don't even point to where it is being stored or carried.

Once the cop asked me to pull it out of the holster, pinching it with thumb and forefinger, and hand it over so he could pull out the magazine and rack the slide to clear it. Every other time they've said, "Just leave it where it is and don't touch it."

Cops know that people who have gone to the trouble of getting a carry permit commit crimes at a vanishingly small rate. Significantly less frequently than sworn law enforcement officers themselves, as a matter of fact. We go out of our way to avoid dangerous situations, and would not dream of fighting them or resisting arrest.

Quick observation on the incident.

There is talk that the gun Pretti carried went off when the agent removed it from him. This lead the other officer to believe that Pretti had the gun and was shooting.

In either case, it means that Pretti was carrying a gun with a chambered round. Check with your concealed carry advocates and you will find that this is really stupid and against all rules of concealed carry.

I don’t understand. Kak said that the nurse perp was unarmed and was shot for using his camera phone.

No it's not, at least not any more. It used to be the case that those carrying a revolver would leave the hammer down on an empty chamber, because early revolvers could discharge accidentally if dropped on the hammer. Carrying one in the chamber is routine with modern pistols, and even modern revolvers that have a transfer-bar safety to prevent this from happening.

It's noteworthy that this guy was carrying a SIG 320, which was long thought to be a very fine pistol from a reputable manufacturer, but is now widely believed to have a propensity for discharging unexpectedly, even while holstered without a finger on the trigger. If that happened while it was being unholstered by one of the ICE officers, it would be a very sad happenstance that could explain the whole affair. The odds are very high against it, but I'm guessing this dipshit nurse was not overly capable of cleaning and maintaining his firearm, so it's not out of the question.

What is "really stupid and against all rules of concealed carry" is going to a protest armed where you expect to commit crimes, and where you expect for there to be violence against the cops.

Standing in the stereo and directing cars to drive into and disrupt an ICE operation is a crime. Pretti was doing that before he went over and picked a fight with the cops.

Suicide by cop

I checked, but what I found out was that OldManRick knows nothing about current concealed carry advocacy nor current handgun safety design.
