Guests at a holiday gathering hosted by Conan O'Brien said they were unnerved when Nick Reiner repeatedly asked strangers "creepy" questions hours before his parents, Rob and Michele Singer Reiner, were found slain in their Brentwood home, police and prosecutors said. According to RadarOnline, attendees described the questions — "What's your name? What's your last name? Are you famous?" — as abrupt and repetitive, delivered without context and continuing even after people tried to disengage.... 'It didn't come across as simple curiosity — it felt driven and repetitive,' one guest said. 'You could see people growing uneasy.' Hosts later asked him to leave, according to two attendees....
Hours later, Nick Reiner made himself famous. The murder he committed is a famous murder. It is now the most famous thing about his long-famous father.
It shouldn't be possible to become famous through murder, but it very clearly is.
Recently many Americans watched "Death by Lightning," a Netflix series about the man who assassinated President Garfield. It's based on a book by Candice Millard, "Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President" (commission earned). I have read that twice. The story has a theme of fame through murder. Excerpt:As he waited cheerfully in Cell Two, Charles Guiteau felt no remorse for his actions, or even fear for his life. He was, in fact, happier now than he had ever been. Having long thirsted for fame and recognition, he found the intense interest in his life and the frenzy of activity that surrounded him at the District Jail not terrifying but thrilling. “I felt lighthearted and merry the moment I got into that cell,” he would later say.
Although reporters visited him on Murderers’ Row in a steady stream, they recoiled when they met him. Even the most seasoned journalists were sickened by the arrogance and enthusiasm with which he recounted his plans to murder the president. “His vanity is literally nauseating,” one reporter, Edmund Bailey, wrote. “Guiteau has an idea that the civilized world is holding its breath waiting to hear of the minutest details of his career.”...
Guiteau also began to make plans for his future. Although by now he was used to being alone, he felt that it was time to remarry, and that he should take advantage of his newly won fame to find a wife. Having offered his autobiography for publication to the New York Herald, he tacked onto the end a personal note. “I am looking for a wife and see no objection to mentioning it here. I want an elegant Christian lady of wealth, under thirty, belonging to a first-class family. Any such lady can address me in the utmost confidence.” Guiteau also used his autobiography to announce his candidacy for president....

His Choice, that bitch.
Per the prosecutor:
"He's no more insane than I am. There's nothing of the mad about Guiteau: he's a cool, calculating blackguard, a polished ruffian, who has gradually prepared himself to pose in this way before the world. He was a deadbeat, pure and simple. Finally, he got tired of the monotony of deadbeating. He wanted excitement of some other kind and notoriety ... and he got it."
Antifa... ther, and mother with empathetic inclusion, a considerate son and she was the moon.
It'll be interesting how Reiner will justify an insanity plea if entered. California doesn't have a death penalty (if its still on the books its not enforced), and he wouldn't get the chair in any case.
No doubt he'll be out of jail in 10-15 years.
Wikipedia has a picture of Guiteau's skull. God what horrible teeth. You have to wonder how he chewed his food.
His vanity is literally nauseating,” one reporter…wrote
Wow that’s saying something…
From stories (reporting?) this morning, Nick's attorneys are setting up an insanity plea, with his condition caused by some prescription meds he'd recently began taking.
It shouldn't be possible to become famous through murder, but it very clearly is.
One-word fame even: Luigi.
Correct me if I’m wrong (I have limited experience with this. Just one employee I had to fire) but isn’t this characteristic of someone on cocaine?
Luigi is a hot cannoli and handmade tale with a liberal license to entertain abortive ideation and take affirmative action.
"Hours later, Nick Reiner made himself famous. The murder he committed is a famous murder. It is now the most famous thing about his long-famous father. "
I know you want to play off Nick Reiner's behavior at Conan's party, but that makes him infamous, not famous.
"It shouldn't be possible to become famous through murder . . ."

If he is ruled "insane," Nick would still be allowed to inherit from his parents' estate. Follow the money...
It's said that Conan stopped some of his guests from calling the police. They thought Nick was just someone who walked in off the street. What a situation for O'Brien: he knew that Nick wasn't just some vagrant but the son of a famous director, but he didn't know that Nick would kill his parents. And what a situation for the guests: if they knew that Nick was Rob's son would they even have thought of calling the cops?

The Menendez brothers have been in the news just a few months back, about possibly getting paroled.
That's the thing about notorious murder, they inspire other borderline deranged people.
Well, he's finally found a way to get off and stay off drugs. I've read that in many high security California prisons, it's very difficult to find a reliable supply of drugs. Let's hope he's incarcerated in such a prison......Let's also hope that in 10-12 years, when he gets out of prison, he'll find his way to channel his energies and his parents' money to a worthwhile cause. Maybe establish the Reiner Global Initiative to help Tren de Agua parolees find their footing and place in our society. Do something to make his parents proud.
Oh, I see John Mosby famously got there first. Well done, Sir!
Wikipedia list Guiteau's motive as "Mental Illness". Is that really a motive, or an excuse for having one?
William, you, Sir, are a treasure.
I really do not get the attraction of fame. It sounds absolutely horrible to be saddled with, and a life sentence of that crap. I wish a wasn't even noticed in my own home, let alone in public.

Rob Reiner would probably have not experienced the career he had, without him being the son of a famous man in Hollywood to open the door.
It looks like Reiner’s other children all work ‘Hollywood’ jobs, where the same doors no doubt opened on behalf of their father.
Nick Reiner could certainly see the Nepo Babies throughout the Hollywood scene. Between the Nepo Babies and the Connected* he knew how much of Hollywood worked.
(*the party was at Conan O’Brien’s — not a true Nepo Baby, but a Harvard Alum, and a kind-of Honorary Nepo Baby of SNL Big Daddy Lorne Michaels, as are Jimmy Fallon, Seth Myers, Bill Hader, etc etc).
Nick got his only movie made because of his Father.
And — despite that — his career went nowhere.
He was born on third base, and yet couldn’t score home on his own talents.
It must be its own peculiar weight, to know that you were given so much, and still failed, and were rejected by the same people that loved your Father.
I’ll give this up for Hunter Biden: at least he hasn’t killed his own parents. Yet.
I am Laslo.
I suppose the party guests got off easy. They would all call Ro Reiner a prince among men, but then they would say that about Woody Allen. Did Nick Reiner have a different opinion, and would it have been enough to motivate the murder of celebrity strangers? We may have a chance to find out.
Because Hunter was the bagman bringing home the money in the Biden family, and from what I've seen he was having damned good time at it too.
Remember the Bronx lady who was prosecuted for chaining her wayward teenage daughter to the radiator?
That sort of thing may be the only humane way for families to take care of their insane addict members. Just imprison them at home. The Reiners could have just reversed all the locks on that pool house, saved millions in rehab fees, and gotten a better result.
Unfortunately under the current system, that's the sure-fire way to put the parents in prison and the addict on the street. CC, JSM

Spoiler: Americans used to get famous for achieving things. Now we need content/entertainment . Say, how many more non stories like this are you and the NYT going to keep serving your readers about this creep? It's Christmas time; can't you at least hold off until the trial, or something fresh worth reporting happens? Is it his formerly good looks that keeps you tuning in? An obsession with true crime? Celebrity gossip?
Stop making guys like him and Luigi famous, prof? Respect the grieving family? Expand your mind. Don't deaden it? Yes you can. Never too late to make a change.
Maybe go for a walk around the block every time you're tempted to publicize stories like this?

so, the Reiners KNEW that their son was SO MENTALLY ILL,
that they COULDN'T leave him unattended..
SO, they brought him with (uninvited) to Someone Else's Xmas party;
where their son acted MENTALLY ILL..
Then; later that night, their MENTALLY ILL son, murdered them..

Conan O'Brien is most responsible for their deaths.
He was encouraged to call the police and have the schizophrenic Nick removed from the party and put in a mental hospital.
But O'Brien refused to call the tops, telling guests: "It's my house. It's my party. And I'm not calling the cops on him."
As a direct result, Nick was free to murder his parents.
Hollywood Privilege.
Your velvet words of purple tint,

FLC: "Hollywood Privilege."
Not sure if you are being ironic. It would be Hollywood Privilege if Conan had called the police to have the ruffian removed - you can only do a 5150 hold if the person's a danger to themselves or others, or gravely disabled. Wandering around a party asking odd questions should not cut it. Especially in a state where it's just fine to wander around a public space pooping on the sidewalk and screaming at passersby.
I suppose the cops could just treat it as a trespassing case, but the Reiners would have left if asked.
If you start locking up Hollywood people for looking and acting weird, where would it end?
Hmmm....(cue Bart Simpson crafty scheming gif) CC, JSM
I've always thought that people who murder their parents should be treated lightly as they are unlikely to do it again. People with more than 3 violent felonies should be incarcerated for life.
I forgot to mention the loud argument between Rob and Nick. That might have been the trigger for partygoers thinking something bad was going to happen.
But if the average person walked in on an argy-bargy between Rob Reiner and his son, which one would look weirder and more unbalanced? Be honest now....
Once again, some groups just be loud. Can't be using that as an excuse to lock them all up. CC, JSM
Nick could throw himself on the mercy of the court as an orphan.
Prospective sketch for tonight’s Saturday Night Live…
ROB REINER: Conan? This is Rob. I just wanted to tell you that the wife and I are really excited about attending your Holiday Party tonight!
CONAN O’BRIEN: I’m glad that you’re coming! I’ve taken great consideration to make sure that the Holiday Spirit isn’t TOO Christmas-y.
ROB REINER: Diversity is Our Strength.
CONAN O'BRIEN: Yeah. We’ve got some magnificent Hanukkah candles, a tree with vintage Ruth Bader Ginsburg ornaments from 2018, and even a little Kwanzaa display by the first-floor guest bathroom.
ROB REINER: Wonderful! I gotta tell you, though — it’s been a tough time, right now.
CONAN O’BRIEN: Really? How so?
ROB REINER: It’s our dog, Sally. She got in a fight with a raccoon recently, and we think she now has rabies. She wants to attack EVERYTHING.
CONAN O’BRIEN: I’m sorry to hear that. I imagine having a rabid dog at home must be terrifying.
ROB REINER: Oh, it is. Which brings me to my next question.
CONAN O’BRIEN: Yeah?
ROB REINER: My wife was hoping that you wouldn’t mind if we brought Sally along with us to your party.
CONAN O’BRIEN: You want to bring a rabid dog to my party?
ROB REINER: We’re afraid to leave her alone at home.
CONAN O’BRIEN: I’m not sure about that…
ROB REINER: We just figured that way we’d then be able to keep an eye on her.
CONAN O’BRIEN: Well…
ROB REINER: It might do her some good. Socialize, you know: get her mind off of her rabies.
CONAN O’BRIEN: I just don’t think bringing a rabid dog to the Holiday Party is a good idea…
ROB REINER: Between Sally’s rabies and that damned Trump ball-room, I am at my wit’s end.
CONAN O’BRIEN: I’m sorry, Rob, but I don’t think I can have a rabid dog at the party. We have some guests coming that are so frail from the weight-loss drugs that the slightest breeze could blow them over. Their bones would break like potato chips.
ROB REINER: So Arianna Grande is coming?
CONAN O’BRIEN: We’re hoping; we’re hoping…
ROB REINER: My wife is going to be so disappointed at the news. The veterinarian had already told her that the dog needs to be put down.
CONAN O’BRIEN: Maybe that’s for the best?
ROB REINER: She’s a really good dog when she is not tearing at human flesh.
CONAN O’BRIEN: Wouldn’t your son Nick be there at home to keep an eye on Sally?
ROB REINER: Yeah, well: about Nick. That brings me to my next question about your party…
I am Laslo.
If you start locking up Hollywood people for looking and acting weird, where would it end?
Rob Reiner is said to have told Conan that he was frightened of Nick and what he might do.
He was a THREAT to others and both the Reiner's knew it. He was very obviously a threat; seeing as how he murdered 2 people just a few hours later.
He wasn't just acting weird. They had a knock-down drag-out fight at that party and Conan O'Brien will end up being sued for refusing to call the cops, leading directly to the murder of Rob Reiner and his wife.
They shouldn't have brought a killer to a Christmas party, but once things got out of hand, both they and O'Brien had a duty.
The shirked their duty. And now two people are dead. O'Brien should be made to pay.
Very tragic. At least Rob doesn’t have to live with knowing his son was charged with murder.
It seems to me that the long game being played by their lawyer, and the reason why it might be more logical than altruistic for the family to pay for Nick Reiner's defense is this. They're planning to subsequently sue the bejeezus out of the "$70,000 per month" mental health clinic doctors who allegedly changed his meds then left him to his elderly parents' care once the drugs made him even crazier than he was. And then they plan to sue the manufacturer of those psychiatric meds that turned an up-to-then relatively harmless drug-addicted probable autist into a murderous psychopath.
This isn't about saving poor little Nicky. It's about what comes after proving he was made legally insane enough to dodge two murder raps, and who was really responsible for that. You know, the ones with the deep pockets.
One might wish to have had the same outcome for this double murderer as the triple murderer from Portugal. I refuse to use either of their names.
Here's Nicky.
Conan: The Coward of the County.
They dispatched the man who tried to kill FDR in '33 in five weeks. I wonder if someone remembered Guiteau's nuttiness and sped things up.
If he were a "friend" (donor or rich peer) of Dummy Donny, he'd be out as soon as the indictment against him could be voided by the White House.
In honor of Charlie Kirk, I am resolving to change my approach in dealing with bug-eyed lefties.....oh wait....with folks with whom I have philosophical disagreements and I am going to gently suggest to Cookie that he provide Grok the following prompt:
"Does the US president have the authority to pardon a rabid murderer, the son of a bug-eyed foaming-at-the-mouth leftie, who was indicted for the state crime by a state DA?"
Just trying for some constructive dialogue here.
- Krumhorn
Conan should be made to pay? What kind of law clerk were you, formerly? No one was injured at Conan's party, he is clearly not responsible for this.
John Mosby, Miley is much more famous than her father. Billy Ray even got his recent big break on Old Town Road because Lil Nas X saw him on Hannah Montana.
FLC, Conan owes no one a duty of care for the actions of a guest after leaving his party. And I have not seen anything indicating that Nick had a previous history of violence or arrest record.
With Reiner's wealth, he could easily have arranged for comprehensive private security in order to ensure their safety as he and his wife slept. With a bit more cash, he could easily have rid himself of the problem entirely. Perhaps, he could have turned to Marcellus for assistance in rounding up some hard, pipe-hittin' types.
- Krumhorn
I've always thought that people who murder their parents should be treated lightly as they are unlikely to do it again. People with more than 3 violent felonies should be incarcerated for life.
Would this count as one or two violent felonies?
It's sad to have to be always armed, safety off, around your grown child.

I hear there are a lot of drugs passed around at Hollywood parties. I wonder if anyone helped Little Nicky get a buzz.

Not sure what it’s like outside of PA, but all of our state mental institutions are essentially closed. The patients have been either returned to their family or turned loose on society. The libs have won this battle …. let’s mainstream these highly mentally disturbed individuals.

What's creepy is the obsession with the murders and murderer.

Interesting in every comment section here and elsewhere, easy to distinguish people who have real life experience with insane friends or relatives as opposed to those that mean well when they suggest therapy or better parenting would solve the problem.

Someone on X posted a timeline graph of asylum rate and incarceration rate since 1950. A big X. What shocked me was calculating the HUGE number of people in hospitals before the mid 60s--over a million! When the US was under 150 million. Assuming the chart was accurate and I read it correctly.
Did they want those people bothering the rest of us, or did they want to spend the money elsewhere? Some were probably deluded into believing medication could fix them.
the message at the time, carried by media, like ken kesey and geraldo rivera, that institutionalization was oppressive, when it may have been a necessary evil,
i think we can conclude the real purpose was to pester us, and lead to a more low trust society,
No one was injured at Conan's party, he is clearly not responsible for this.
Conan was asked to call the cops, at his house, when a murderous guest known to him to be a lifelong drug addict began a heated argument inside his home. People BEGGED Conan to call the cops and have Nick placed into protective custody.
He refused. That was a tort. He will be sued eventually, and should be, by everyone at the party, for failing to protect Rob and his wife when he had the opportunity to do so.
"And then they plan to sue the manufacturer of those psychiatric meds that turned an up-to-then relatively harmless drug-addicted probable autist into a murderous psychopath."
Unlikely. Big Pharma already enjoys broad civil immunity for off-label use of its products.
If the problem of drugs that make people psychotic is Beth's bailiwick, she should start with greenhouse pot and proceed from there.
Sorry Kirk, I'm not at liberty to say.
IANALOEAFLC, but I'll play.
How is not calling the authorities on an addict-asshole who has committed no crime a tort?
Hey rhhardin, your poem doesn’t rhyme - “Camus” is pronounced “Caa-mu”; does NOT rhyme with “famous”.
Common mistake though. In one of Harlan Ellison’s famous (or should it be infamous?) TV reviews for the Los Angeles Free Press, he told of an early writing job of his on the early-60s TV show Ripcord, where one of the guest stars was playing a Hemingway-like character; this character was being interviewed about his being one of the last of the great writers from the Lost Generation, and the script name-checked several writers, including Camus, and the actor playing the interviewer pronounced it “Cay-mus”. Ellison blew up, the production team refused to reshoot or even loop the correct production, and Ellison didn’t write much for Ripcord anymore. Ellison apparently was a major asshole but wrote beautifully and told great stories.
Ellison was prickly and this was way before Cameron basically borrowed one of his scripts for the terminator,
"Narr said...
"I really do not get the attraction of fame."
Well, I got used to it, and so can you."
Narr bragging about his legs again.
FLC is an idiot
"He refused. That was a tort. He will be sued eventually, and should be,"
Maybe if there was some kind of Dramshop law and Conan was serving him booze or drugs.
"I really do not get the attraction of fame."
Me too, but I'm sure it changes once you have it. Then you need it.
Gozer: Are you a god?
Ray (nervously): No.
Winston Zeddemore (yells): Ray, when someone asks you if you're a god, you say, 'YES!'"
I wonder if one of his parents enticed him to go with them to the party by telling him there would be a lot of famous people there. (Pretending it would be interesting or a way to network instead of coming out and saying they don't trust him to be left home alone and would rather go to the party than stay home with him.) Going around asking if everyone was famous could have been a way to needle that parent.
FLC,
How in the world could some third party who was at an event where neither they nor Reiner were harmed, possibly have standing to sue some other person who hosted the event at which no assault took place?
You make us all happy about the "Former" part of your handle here.
@Mary Beth
That sounds very plausible and I think would fit the behavior of Nick at the party.
Some psychos can be helped. Some can be crazy and functional, some need to be locked up.
This is clearly true. The problem lies in determining which are which. I'm feeling very fortunate that in my own circle, so far it's been pretty easy: the few disturbed have been obviously benign with no pattern of escalation.
By the way, welcome back, Robert Cook! I'm glad you're all right. (Also I sigh at this first comment in, what, a month or more, but I'm still glad you're ok.)

I asked AI if Robin Leach ever feature the infamous in his famous show Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous. They never did a show like that.
better parenting would solve the problem.
Parenting has nothing to do with organic mental illness like schizophrenia. This is something Sigmund Freud pulled out of his ass while sitting in an armchair. He tried for most of his career to cure schizophrenics with a “talking cure” and never once succeeded.
However, for many decades, he did succeed in driving a wedge between children and their good, loving parents in millions of families. Thankfully it eventually became apparent that Freud was a fraud, and the elite left-wing “intelligentsia” who made a fetish of his horseshit were gullible fools. Even today his stupid myths and confabulations — penis envy, Oedipal complex, castration anxiety, phallic symbols, anal fixation, etc. — permeate the thinking of educated morons.
"Narr bragging about his legs again."
Jealousy is such an ugly emotion.
"it’s time to institutionalize your son."
From what little I know of his behavior and a similar local situation I don't think that a forced commitment was an option legally.
They could have had him removed from the house at some point but they didn't.
My wife knew Harlan Ellison fairly well as she used to run SF conventions and he was a frequent guest.
My ex from my brief, youthful first marriage was a big fan, especially of Ellison's collected TV critique columns under the title The Glass Teat. He (Ellison, though also my ex) was a gifted writer, but came off as quite the jerk.
And speaking of that (people being jerks, that is), I think it's possible to misconstrue my prior comment as my having intentionally referred to Robert Cook right after talking about disturbed people. I sincerely did not mean to do that. It would have been a jerk move on my part and I try to avoid those.
Then the Reiners took it for the team, in a sense, took their son off the streets, where he could have harmed the strangers. No such thing as white and black.

If you have to walk on eggshells around your son
From what I've seen and inferred, Rob's family first walked on eggshells around him. They may have preferred it when he neglected them for an obsession.
Huggie Bear says word on the street is that Joe Biden is a really horrible, corrupt, vile creep, Peachy.
I think nick resented his parents because he was financially dependent on them. He felt like a victim of their “abuse” and justified his angry, hostile behavior toward them. It’s very sad to realize that children killing their parents is a reality today. Clozapine. Unstable, mentally ill children. Give them clozapine. Help parents to stay alive , give them options to institutionalize their violent children. Otherwise they get institutionalized in prison. Maybe it’s the same thing. I don’t know.
Muh plums!!!!!

I find this: "they wanted Conan to call the police" bizzare. Its a fucking "Holiday Party". The Reiners brought their son, their son was acting bizzare. Conan - as the host - should have told the Reiners to take their son home.
What the police have to do with it? In any case, anyone can call the police. Conan wasn't the only one with a phone.
ha ha ha
never heard of him!
Guiteau quit school to join the Oneida Community, a religious sect that practiced "free love." He was rejected by the ladies while he was there. And Guiteau's nickname became "Charles Gitout."
Another irony is that Garfield's wound was not serious by modern standards. He would have gone home in a couple of days. The doctors killed him by constantly poking and prodding into the wound with unsterilized hands. (The recognized need for sterile medical care happened in the USA about a decade later).
Guiteau went with a temporary insanity plea at trial. He represented himself at first (basically arguing, "I'm sane now, judge."). The judge insisted that he have counsel.
Guiteau argued that he was legally insane, not medically insane. And he had big fights with his lawyers over this.
The defense hired Edward Charles Spitzka, a leading "alienist," who testified that Guiteau had "the insane manner" he had so often observed in asylums. He diagnosed a "congenital malformation of the brain."
The prosecutor argued that Guiteau was a big faker. "He's no more insane than I am."
Guiteau became something of a media sensation during his entire trial for his bizarre behavior, which included his cursing and insulting the judge, most of the witnesses, the prosecution, and even his defense team, as well as formatting his testimony in epic poems which he recited at length, and soliciting legal advice from random spectators in the audience via passed notes. He appeared oblivious to the American public's hatred of him.
At one point, Guiteau argued that Garfield was killed not by the bullets but by medical malpractice; "The doctors killed Garfield, I just shot him."
Guiteau sent a letter to the new president in which he argued that Arthur should set him free because he had just increased Arthur's salary by making him president.
After the guilty verdict was read, Guiteau stepped forward, despite his lawyers' efforts to tell him to be quiet, and yelled at the jury, saying, "You are all low, consummate jackasses!"
I'm pretty sure the eye rhyme (famous/Camus) was a joke.
Hours later, Nick Reiner made himself famous. The murder he committed is a famous murder. It is now the most famous thing about his long-famous father.
It shouldn't be possible to become famous through murder, but it very clearly is.
1) He's not famous; he's infamous.
2) His notoriety will be short-lived.
3) Rob Reiner will be famous for decades.
The attorneys are going with an insanity defense. Already they are rolling out the argument that he was schizophrenic and his medicine was changed.
A major problem (I think) is that Nick was a notorious drug-user. And using drugs undermines any argument that he not responsible for his actions.
I've always thought that people who murder their parents should be treated lightly as they are unlikely to do it again.
You realize, I suppose, that if we give a get-out-of-jail free card to people that kill their parents, we will have a lot more people killing their parents?

I thought TBH was a gay guy. He's often over the top like a flamer.
All Nick needs to do is have a poor cousin say Nick confided to him of lifelong sexual abuse by his parents. Imagine the sympathy in the media. Imagine the Netflix documentary.
"It shouldn't be possible to become famous through murder, but it very clearly is"
Decades of mass shooter manifestos did not make this clear? Nearly every one seems to be a "pay attention to me so I can be famous" stunt.
