The Times helpfully notes "US law mandates half-mast for ten days following the death of a vice-president," rubbing it in that Trump is shutting up about Cheney.

Is Leavitt’s reaction any more stone cold than Trump’s media enemies exploiting the death of one of Trump’s political opppnents?
It's no secret that Dick Cheney vociferously opposed President Trump's re-election. It would be hypocritical for Trump to come out and praise Cheney upon his passing. As I noted yesterday morning, it was a "Nil Nisi Bonum" kind of day; if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. If Trump manages that, I'll be satisfied.
It would be a fitting tribute to the former vice president if we all were to tell Patrick Leahy to go fuck himself.

Clyde's statement is weak. Merely opposing Trump for president is not enough of a reason for a snub. Plenty of political opponents bury the hatchet when one of their opposite numbers passes away.
Dick Cheney is different. He was an evil greedy bastard who was The Mastermind behind the 20 years of the war on terror that resulted in trillions upon trillions of expenditure and millions of deaths all for nothing. That's the justification for the snub, not the lack of political support for the election of your lord and savior.

As others have said, it is appropriate for Trump and the White House to not say anything regarding the passing of Dick Cheney. I don't think folks in the media emotionally appreciate this given their levels of two-faced fakery, but kind words that aren't really meant and that are widely known to not be meant don't offer comfort to anyone.
Dick Cheney wasn't Hitler or Stalin. However, he was directly responsible for approximately the same amount of murder and mayhem perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire against the Armenians. Just because he got away with it doesn't mean he's not a war criminal. F*** him. Good riddance to bad garbage. I hope he suffered saw it coming and was very very afraid.

Watched the clip. The question is silly. The funeral arrangements are made by the family. The stuff about "laying in state" is worked out before their death, and I don't recall VP's getting that honor... looked it up, Hubert Humphrey was the last VP (not counting George HW Bush) to lay in state. Flag status is a statutory law thing.
I see Thune was also asked about Cheney laying in state. These people asking the questions are pushing their own agenda. Mondale wasn't given that honor. Every other VP just before or after became President or is still alive. Do you think they would be asking this question about Dan Quayle?
Let's say for the sake of argument that Trump had at least liked Cheney. Let's say, then, that he'd praised him in Trumpian fashion.
Can we have any doubt that the media reaction upon hearing it would have been anything other than "Trump lauds Darth Cheney, architect of death in the Middle East"?

Cheney's not lying in state because Congress feared that the man who survived five heart attacks would suddenly sit up and start ordering them around. Hubert Humphrey was safely dead when he lay in state, and if he hadn't been, he would have been looking for orders about what to do, rather than giving them.

The Bush-Cheney policy post-9/11 was a disaster. Why? Because they used the Bin Ladin- planned attack as an excise to attempt to change things in the ME, but they knew not how a change would happen. A neo- colonial police action in Afghanistan turned into a 20 year effort to nation-build in Iraq and Afghanistan. And they dropped the ball on finding and killing Bin Ladin (thanks, Obama). McCain was given a big sendoff because he was a 25 year plus Senator and DC loved him. The Hump was a senator for over 24 years and was still in the Senate when he died.
Cheney was VP and served in the House through 1989. That was 36 years ago. Agnew and Mondale no state funeral. Gore wont get one. Truman and FDR's VPs didn't get one. Most of VPs since WW 2 got big send offs because they were Presidents. Nixon, Ford, Bush, LBJ, BIden.
Hubert Humphrey had class. He personally called up Nixon and invited him to the funeral. This is when Nixon was in disgrace after Watergate. Compare that to McCain and Trump. Or McCain's treatment of Palin.
I, for one, asked AI how wealthy Dick Cheney's family was upon his death, and the answer was about $150,000,000. Not bad. Makes me think the family can afford an "FU" directed at the current president.

The only public appearance by Cheney in several years that I saw was his absurd prerecorded screed against Trump in 2024, I think, in which he declared that The Donald was the greatest threat to the USA in history.
I wondered at the time if he was still of sound mind or if he was possibly being controlled by his horrible daughter.
Has anybody seen another appearance? Something live?
