Ankle monitors in the news.

1. "How a Sabotaged Ankle Monitor Ended Bolsonaro’s House Arrest/Shortly before he was expected to start serving a 27-year sentence, Brazil’s former president took a soldering iron to his tracking device" (NYT): "Mr. Bolsonaro, 70, wasn’t trying to flee, his sons, allies and lawyers said. Rather, he felt unwell because of his medications." This happened "days before he was expected to begin a 27-year prison sentence for trying to stage a coup." "A day before the ankle monitor episode, his lawyers had asked the court to let Mr. Bolsonaro serve his sentence at home because of health problems, which he attributes to complications from a stabbing attack in 2018. His poor health, which includes frequent attacks of hiccups and vomiting, 'makes his safe stay in a prison environment impossible,' his defense said on social media.... At a hearing on Sunday, Mr. Bolsonaro told the court he had burned the ankle monitor because his medications had caused 'hallucinations' and 'paranoia' that the device might be used to eavesdrop."

2. "'Slender Man' attacker Morgan Geyser found a day after cutting off monitoring bracelet" (CNN): "A woman who stabbed her sixth-grade classmate to win favor with a fictional internet character named 'Slender Man' more than a decade ago has been taken into custody, a day after cutting off her monitoring bracelet and leaving a group home where she’d been living, police said.... At age 15, Geyser pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted first-degree murder in a deal with prosecutors to be placed in a mental institution instead of serving jail time.... In January, a judge ordered she could be released from the Winnebago Mental Health Institute, where she spent nearly seven years.... Geyser is currently living at a group home in Madison, [Wisconsin] on the same street where she was last seen...."

3. "Innocent woman, 26, set alight on Chicago subway 'by serial criminal, 50' freed on ankle monitor by soft touch judge in horrific echo of Iryna Zarutska murder" (Daily Mail): "Cook County Judge Teresa Molina-Gonzalez (pictured) allowed Lawrence Reed, 50, to be released on an ankle monitor after he assaulted a social worker in August.... Reed is accused of setting fire to [Bethany MaGee, 26] around 9.24pm on Monday, which is outside of the hours he was allowed out of the house while on the ankle monitor."

4. "Charge against Melodee Buzzard’s mom dismissed, ankle monitor removed as FBI hunts for missing 9-year-old/Ashlee Buzzard no longer faces false imprisonment charge as FBI searches for 9-year-old Melodee" (Fox News): "... Brewer said Buzzard locked multiple deadbolts after he entered and appeared 'agitated and tense.' He testified that she sat across from him with a box cutter visible on a nearby tray. When he said he was uncomfortable and wanted to leave, he claimed she blocked the doorway and locked the front door.... The court... dismissed the felony charge for insufficient evidence and ended Buzzard’s pretrial supervision.... She is also no longer required to wear an ankle monitor."

Soon, the Ankle Monitors will be a branch of the sharia police.

Bolsonaro used a soldering iron “out of curiosity” to remove the ankle tag. Not exactly falling off in bed…

You can understand why Trump wouldn't want presidents to be liable for coup attempts. But in the end the price of coffee mattered more.

Congrats, prof, on having a full TDS loon as a mascot. Kak really should be posting on the “For you…” thread on X. I call it the Arkham Asylum of social media.

A woman behind me in line at the grocery store had an ankle monitor on. She was reasonably attractive and not out of my league. I’m a happily married man, to quote a Duane Allman song, but if I weren’t I might have chatted her up for coffee. This is a question for the guys: would an ankle monitor be an automatic no?

I'm at the point where I think our judges need to be wearing ankle bracelets. They are killing this nation from within.

By the way, Slender Man is out there.

If ankle monitors don't define criminality, how does removing them affirm it?

Temujin, don't tease us! Tell us more about Slender Man being out there. Have you seen him? inquiring minds want to know.

Maybe not if you're the kind of guy who likes the birds with broken wings?

You know, a Travis McGee type. I always wanted to find one of those. Unfortunately, I'm not a bird with a broken wing; I'm more that bird with the really irritating call who wakes you up too early and won't let you get back to sleep. So I found a man who is adept at tuning out that which need not be attended to. His calibration on that point is not perfect (which prompted me to exclaim yesterday, "Apparently sometimes even when you participate in a conversation, you're not actually listening!"), but it's very good.

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean you are wrong. Especially in Lula's Brazil.

Geyser now identifies as a man. I'm legit surprised that the story didn't switch her gender.

Apparently, if one is skilled enough, there is a way to remove an ankle monitoring device by using a soldering iron to jump the enclosed wires, before cutting it off.

I read that somewhere.

Apparently, that was up on one of her social media accounts. It is being displayed to illustrate the naivety of young women.

Over at neo's place, she posted about "anarchotyranny" - a system in which those predisposed to obey laws are hit with more and more of them, greater and greater demands on their individual liberties, whereas the lawless live unfettered in a might-makes-right world that depends only on how little they care about things like "norms." This system benefits the powerful because the more anarchic the lawless places become the more restrictions they can justify on the lawful enclaves.

I just don't see what the endgame is. In this scenario, it seems to me that eventually you must inevitably have a showdown between the powerful who have facilitated the growth of this system, and the strongest of the lawless element. Point, I suppose, is that in this scenario, the powerful do not see themselves as part of the lawful enclaves.

It seems to me that this is much truer of both the Democrat "elite" and the so-called "globalists" than of Trump or his supporters, including (I think) Republican "elite" who are on board with him. And yes, I'm aware that I'm subject to confirmation bias, like everybody else. But who supports releasing violent criminals into the community, and who doesn't?

Ankle monitor = performative prop for progressive judges. Chicago attempted murder by arson is horrific, and true indictment of violent crimes empowered by progressive-liberal social-justice zero cash-bond walk-away-from-felony-charge chicanery. This Chicago criminal had 70+ felony arrests; two weeks previously, violently attacked nurse in mental-health facility where he supposedly resided, arrested and released, then set fire to Chicago City Hall last Sunday night, and set fire to this young woman one Monday night. Horrific crime is shared responsibility of Cook County failed court-system, where judges are more concerned about welfare of felony offenders than we law-abiding innocent folks compelled to serve as next available victim of those offenders' violent crimes.

“Opening our national borders, restricting gun ownership, providing shelter for illegal aliens, condoning urban lawlessness, refusing to punish criminals, and punishing self-defense all represent the left’s campaign to undermine the rule of law and create anarchy, chaos, and fear—leaving confused citizens clamoring for change. The left also seeks to create a constituency of moochers dependent on the welfare state, who will eventually demand socialism to provide for their needs. This is sometimes referred to as the Cloward-Piven strategy.

The ankle monitors should come with stun-gun power with GPS boundaries. Otherwise, you just aren't serious about using it as a kind of detention.

As a member of the moron horde, naturally I have family and friends who have worn or are currently wearing an ankle monitor.
Some things I've learned about them as a result:
You can't "discombobulate the fucker" by sprinting from trailer house to trailer house to score some pot from the guy at other end of the court. Metal siding doesn't make you "invisible to the cops".
The Flintstones 'ankle monitor lizard' episode is even more hilarious if you're wearing an ankle monitor and it happens to come on.

Note: An ankle monitor automatically means she is in one of the top two ticks on the y-axis.

Cook county judges = leftists. The funniest instance of their "soft on crime" approach was two men got into a fist-fight. when one was knocked down, the other took out a knife and stabbed him to death.

The Judge's verdict: No jail time. Mutual combat.

RCOCEAN II said...

This is the Liberal/left lawyer position. Blacks/Browns shouldn't be put in jail. We need room for white people convicted of "insurrection" or "hate crimes". Crazy that 'muricans put up with it.

It seems that an awful lot of our justice system is based on the honor system. People are given ankle monitors, but nobody bothers to enforce it if the monitor is removed or if the person goes his own way. Illegal immigrants are given final deportation orders that they just ignore. Something needs to change.

The Buzzard case in the last article is weird. The ankle monitor part is kind of a sideshow to the ongoing case, in which the formerly ankle-monitored lady's daughter is missing, after a cross-country odyssey during which, inter alia, mother and daughter wore wigs to help disguise themselves. The traditional suspect - the other parent - died long before any of this, so it's not a simple case. The mum may be genuinely paranoid, and so prone to things like falsely imprisoning her friend, because of the daughter's disappearance. Or she may have disappeared the daughter because she's paranoid. Or the paranoia may be an act to lay foundations for a mental-illness defense if she does eventually get prosecuted for disappearing the daughter. Or some other combination. Very strange. CC, JSM

I had to wear one years ago for a DUI. Not proud of it, and I certainly didn't go in public without it being incredibly inconspicuous. It can be done, even people at church didn't know. Baring it brazenly seems a marker.
