"Texas becomes the first state to allege that taking [Tylenol] while pregnant can cause autism, despite unsettled scientific evidence."

I'm reading "Texas AG Paxton files Tylenol lawsuit, taking cues from Trump, Kennedy" (WaPo)(free-access link).

Excerpt: "For decades, scientists have been studying whether acetaminophen is linked to autism and ADHD. But sorting out a connection has proved elusive, researchers say. For example, many pregnant individuals take acetaminophen to reduce a fever, which itself could affect a baby’s development, according to the FDA."

How mystifying is that? The rule should at least be against use when pregnant unless it is necessary to reduce fever that is high enough to affect the development of the unborn child — a rule to be applied by doctors.

By the way: "pregnant individuals."

All science is unsettled, but that doesn’t prevent lawsuits. How many lawsuits are based on climate science?

When all this drama about Tylenol blew up, I read the warning label on Tylenol bottle. It says that if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult your doctor before taking it.

Obviously it’s not 100% safe for pregnant women. This is not in doubt. People have the right to know if there is an issue with the medications they are taking and then they can decide if they want to take it.

The health and development of children is irrelevant. The main goal is The Resistance! So what if some kids suffer the rest of their lives. Cracked eggs, making omelets, etc.

Shot: ..."comes barely a month after President Donald Trump repeatedly warned pregnant women not to take Tylenol — despite a lack of evidence....."

Chaser: ..."Risk Summary: A clear association of drug use and birth defects, miscarriage, or adverse maternal or fetal outcomes has not been shown with human use; animal studies have demonstrated adverse events at clinically relevant doses...."

I eagerly await the first lawsuits treating the objectively dishonest use of the word 'evidence' to prove a negative.

Once we look back at the "woke" era, especially in terms of the trans/non-binary social contagion--because that's what it is--one of the most damning aspects is going to be the complete capture of our medical journals and professional associations.

When my wife was pregnant, years ago, couples went around saying "we are pregnant." So, maybe I was one of those pregnant individuals. Except we were a couple. Hmm. . . . Should I have avoided taking acetaminophen?

Yeah, cuz they're probably taking Tylenol and it's turning their spooge into autism juice. It won't hurt you if you take it orally though. I'm not a scientist, but AI and shit...

Yeah. Of course. Groups don't get pregnant, individuals do. What's your point?

The point of science is not to be settled. The point is to do research. Science is never settled, but the weight of scientific findings often creates a general consensus. Until an inspired researcher disrupts the consensus.

My first question is "Why isn't Ken Paxton in jail?" Fraud, wire fraud, abuse of power and real-estate fraud.

If you lived in Texas, you would be angry about using taxpayer dollars for lawsuits that are at best publicity seeking. The most that can be said about the data is that there seems, in some of the studies, to be a statistical correlation. However, the emphasis is "some", which is certainly not a robust finding. It's not possible to see how a disinterested reading of the studies produces a statement "acetaminophen causes autism".

The advice to pregnant women has not changed, use acetominophen, or any other medicine sparingly when pregnant. Not using acetominophen can result in elevated temperatures in the pregnant woman, possibly result in fever, which is generally bad for the pregnant woman and her fetus.
Autism is a very complex disease and may be several diseases lumped together. There appear to be many contributors to increasing the risk of autism, not just one. The rising rates of autism are generally thought to be due to more awareness and better surveillance.

Far better use of Texas's tax dollars is working on water quality on the border with Mexico and better pre-natal care.

One sure way to fuck something up is to get lawyers and politicians involved. The Tylenol episode is a good explainer of our health care system, in which there are two ways to get rich: Create medicine, or sue the people who create medicine.

Leave it to Ken Paxton to waste everyone's time and taxpayer money. He's suing the brand name company but generic acetaminophen is available in every drugstore and is included in many OTC and prescription medications such as cold remedies, sleep remedies and pain meds like Percocet and Norco/Vicodin.

Think of this as the "Paxton for Senator" lawsuit. The substance isn't important.

Jamie said...

It's not possible to see how a disinterested reading of the studies produces a statement "acetaminophen causes autism".

It's very possible, however, to read the relevant studies, disinterestedly or not, and conclude that there may well be a causative relationship. And I'm here to tell you that a lot of doctors tell women Tylenol is fine, just fine, to take for anything that you might have taken it for when not pregnant. I'm also here to tell you that there are specific developmental windows during pregnancy during which anything that disrupts any part of fetal development should be avoided, and we don't understand fetal development fully, (better all the time, but still so much to learn), so it's not by any means out of the question that there is/are such developmental window(s) during which acetaminophen should be avoided.

I had pneumonia when I was 7 months pregnant and ran a fever of 105° - at that level, my OB was definitely concerned (like, she sent me to the ER, and I have no idea what they gave me as an antipyretic). But at 100°? A pregnant woman might feel very uncomfortable with a low-grade fever because she already feels that she's running hot. But maybe she should put a cool cloth on her forehead for a low-grade fever at certain points during her pregnancy.

As for older parental age - I remember that too, especially with regard to paternal age. And it also seems perfectly reasonable that defects in sperm, which may follow a particular pattern in older men, could cause or contribute to autism. It is, after all, a complex condition, as Kak says.

I just don't understand why, in a milieu in which doctors may still imply to their pregnant patients that Tylenol is perfectly safe, we wouldn't want to get them to stop doing that, when the manufacturer's label says that a doctor should be consulted before use - its own implication being that a doctor should rule on each use. A non-pregnancy example: my very highly educated sister was once asked by her doctor whether she was a heavy drinker because her liver function was so poor. She doesn't touch alcohol - but at the time she took Tylenol every day for a chronic pain. Because we all know how safe it is.

Is the vaporous link between acetaminophen and autism any stronger than the link between untreated pain and fetal development?
