Without commenting on the appropriateness of a pardon or commutation, I’d argue his release from jail would create political capital with some demographics.

I fully admit I didn't follow the Diddy trail. Our 35 year old gave me a few blurbs about it. What distressed him was all the Diddy is a BAD man stuff tossed out at trial that, in the end, had NOTHING to do with the conviction.
My interpretation, based solely on that limited information, is that Diddy's conviction could apply to a lot of bachelor weekends.

We’ve now blown up the norms that constrained the use of that power and nothing is standing in the way of the president using it to run a completely lawless administration, ordering his subordinates to commit crimes on his behalf and then pardoning them and even himself. I’m not sure what the right answer is — maybe an amendment creating an independent pardon commission that would have to approve any pardons? Maybe requiring congressional approval of pardons? Something should be done. The status quo is unacceptable.

Your opening sentence undermines your following argument, Douglas. One of the reasons the pardon power exists is to right wrongs. Do you really believe, for example, that all of the January 6th prosecutions were just? Even if you do think they were all just, many people think they were a gross violation of many of those defendants civil rights and I personally don't want any "non-partisan" commission in charge of pardons- I want someone answerable to the voters to wield such a power.
