My niece (who is 16) likes Bad Bunny and will tell anyone within earshot about it. She may not be the target audience for the NFL, but Bad Bunny has many, many fans in that demographic. His politics are standard-issue leftism, as far as I can tell. Yawn.
I don't know that there's anyone around who would be popular with more than a subsection of the audience. I am a lifelong Who fan, but their appearance at the Super Bowl years ago was sad.
It actually makes sense...as the players get more bizarre and trashy so does the halftime show. The last few have looked like something from the 5th circle of hell.
The NFL's player population is nearly all black, and so the league is afraid of a labor action if it isn't woke enough, right? I never thought the average NFL owner or manager was particularly woke. The Packers are owned by drunk working-class white fans since they went public.
Women's sports, ironically, point toward an answer. People will watch a sport played by people who are not objectively the best at it, as long as both teams are close enough to make the competition interesting.
The NFL could take a stand against wokeness, let the black players go on strike or whatever, then become the Pretty Good But Not the Best League of White and Hispanic Football Players. Viewership and merch sales might even go up. Look at what baseball has done with a growing Latino fan base.

My guess is they want all the demos. Whether this helps them? Who knows, but they pay people a lot of money to figure this stuff out. And they don't have to care what I think and haven't had to for many years. I'll watch the game and ignore the halftime, as I typically do.
Personally, I'm not furious. The opposite of love is not hate, it's apathy. I truly do not care about the Super Bowl halftime show. That will be a good time for a lengthy bathroom visit, and then maybe getting some snacks before the second half starts. I don't care about someone prancing about singing in a foreign language. I. Do. Not. Care.
Bad Bunny is probably the second-biggest musician in the USA, second only to Taylor Swift. He's been on a fantastic run for the past 6-7 years. I'm a former NFL/Vikings fan who last cared when Favre had the Vikings one interception from the Superbowl. My politics are strongly right-of-center, but good music and good politics rarely align. I actually started (re-)learning Spanish (forgotten most of what I'd learned in HS in the 1990s) because of how much I've enjoyed Bad Bunny and other Reggaeton artists.
Bad Bunny was also quite funny as an actor in the Happy Gilmore sequel.

To call back to an earlier exchange, if we Packer owners got a vote in the executive committee the comish would be replaced with Condi Rice or someone else like her who loves the game (not the extraneous drama) and has executive experience. But like the other owners groups, the Packer corp only gets to send one rep to the league meetings. We do vote on our GM and other hires though.
There was a big shift in the Biden/BLM era from mostly white to overwhelmingly black acts. The same people are in charge now, so they aren't going to pick a more mainstream favorite.
Now we're at a crossroads. The BLM era is over, and the wind has changed. There will be more mainstream (which may or may not mean white) performers. On the other hand, Boomers are a shrinking demographic, so familiar acts from the 70s and 80s aren't going to be performing.
Not being a big football (or contemporary pop music) fan, I don't really care who does the half-time show. The daily controversies start to seem contrived and ginned up after a while.

It wasn't bad at all, though it's hard to appreciate the lyrics since I don't speak Spanish. Maybe the NFL will provide subtitles. Neither video had any cross dressing or anything controversial. They just looked like they were having fun. The music was reminiscent of some the music I heard while drinking Mexican lagers in Cozumel bars so it put me a good mood. Definitely more relatable for me than some of other recent halftime acts. Can't recall who they were, but they didn't draw me to the television.

I don't know if Bad Bunny can "sing" as such, but his vocal delivery is very different from other artists in his genre, and has a lot of appeal. There's a reason he's huge... it's not just marketing.
In the summer of 2022, I was doing a bunch of work around the house and wanted some hip-hop/pop music, but my kids were around and the vulgar lyrics made it hard to have that playing. I had heard that Bad Bunny was big and I knew he was all in Spanish, so I didn't have to worry about the vulgarities, so I played Un Verano Sin Ti and I've been pretty much hooked since then.

This sort of argument has been going on ever since the 1980s, when the NFL moved the halftime show from "Up With People" to "Up Yours, Wypipo." The entertainment industry does what it does and now with the advent of all-AI "actress" Tilly Norwood, the industry is looking at the form of its destructor. As long as I can still listen to all the great music and watch the great television shows and movies of the past, it will be fine.
And if all this depresses you, there is a sign that some people in the larger entertainment industry are coming to their senses; the evidence is the great success of the comedian Nate Bargatze, who is seeking and finding a universal audience.

College and Pro football has become a spectacle, over-gizmo'd with ridiculous advertising, pre- and post-game broadcasting showcasing absurd wardrobes and idiots spouting their profundities, with athletes that are exploited then discarded, unless they are smart enough to work their own lifestyle games into the mix. It's a sad triumph of capitalism over what ought to be a purely physical spectacle of competitive skill and gamesmanship. At the college level, many of them can't read or do basic math (S.I.L. used to tutor while in school). Has anybody ever tallied up the actual game time and juxtaposed it within the overall time by discrete category: play analysis, commercial ads, so on? Ugh.
Nothing against those who want to watch it, or those that treat it as a backdrop to a social event, but puhleeze - whole stories about Bad Bunny's gig? Would you want him dating your daughter?

Yes that is EXACTLY what Green Bay does at home games. It's a whole community type of party and football.
The HS bands especially rarely make the broadcast though.

EXO! Many of my favorite groups have disbanded (Big Bang, Wonder Girls, Miss A, FT Island) and I don't listen to KPop as much as I did a decade + ago (when I was really up on all of the groups). Maybe Stray Kids?

Popular music once had mass appeal. It now is a service industry for niche audiences. The closest to a mass appeal star is Taylor Swift, and she skews female and young.
I annually watch portions of the Super Bowl, but haven't watched a halftime show in decades. The most interesting thing about this is the messaging to the normies: you have been replaced. Better to hear that sooner than later.
Spanish singer? I'd watch old video of Shakira before she came to the US. Great stuff.

MAGA fury? I've never heard of him. And if I had, I probably would assumed he was an anime character or something.
But if he's popular, God bless. I've always enjoyed the cognitive dissonance of the Super Bowl. A half-time show for teenage girls amid the parodic testosterone of the pickup commercials. It's a riffer's paradise.

A halftime show that wanted to bring the country together could just have singers from 3 or 4 genres each do one song, then come together at the end for a finale, maybe even a patriotic-ish number. Keep Bad Bunny, but add Garth Brooks, give Will Smith a comeback, and throw in the guy from Train. And the finale could be Neil Diamond's They're Coming To America.
Many of the halftime shows have had multiple artists from the same genre, so it's not that much of a stretch. CC, JSM
I wonder if Bad Bunny is the first performer they offered this to -- or the third, or the tenth. It's actually a really tough gig, with a lot of potential for things to go wrong in front of a huge live audience (like with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake way back when).
The obvious person to do this would be Taylor Swift, who not only is possibly the biggest act in the world right now, but has a football connection (and puts on kind of a cheerleader-y) performance. But what would she have to gain, really? The fact is that her un-sweetened singing voice isn't that great compared to a lot of other pop stars -- and it would really be impossible for her to become more famous, at least in a positive way. I'm guessing they asked her and she turned it down.

Or go "Mamma Mia" or "Les Miz" style: embrace nonprofessional voices and have retired football players do the singing. A lot of them have recorded promotional cuts before, like da Bears with the Super Bowl Shuffle. Others have made efforts of varying success at actual music careers. Coach Prime could reprise his big non-hit. Hardcore football fans would love seeing old favorites, and non-fans would be amused by a bunch of old guys singing and dancing around. CC, JSM

I couldn't possibly care less about the NFL or their halftime show, but maybe - just maybe - people are upset at this selection because his music sucks?
The fact that somehow 'maga' is upset this guy criticizes Trump is absurd. Find me an artist that doesn't criticized Trump.
And to add ... if you're still watching the NFL after all the ways they've shit in your face, that's on you. Not them.

Halftime for all games during the regular season and playoffs is 12 to 13 minutes. Only for the Super Bowl does it get doubled to 25 to 30 minutes. This significantly changes both the strategic and physical impact of the halftime period on the game itself.
Put whoever the hell you want out there. Just get them on and off in 12 minutes. It's a football game, not a Broadway show.
I think this is the wrong show at the wrong time but how that will manifest ... no idea. It just seems like BudLite move.
