Robert Redford died earlier this month. We all know his most famous movies. But to remember him I wanted to watch one of his movies I had never seen before. So tonight I watched All Is Lost. It's kind of like Earnest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea," but with a modern sailboat and no fish. It was great. For some reason I really like these "man against nature" survivalist movies. I think it's because I put myself in their situation and wonder what I would do. It's part of your Amazon Prime subscription for the next 2 days if you are interested. I highly recommend it.

Horrendous attack on a Latter Day Saints (aka Mormon) church in Grand Blanc, MI. Details are stil a bit sketchy, but at a news conference, Chief of Police William Renye said the suspect was identified as a 40-year-old male from Burton, Michigan, named Thomas Jacob Sanford. He drove his SUV through the doors of the church and began shooting as he exited the vehicle. At least two police officers engaged Sanford and succeeded in killing him, but not before he set fire to the church building, which has since burned to the ground.

Two parishioners are confirmed dead, eight are in the hospital. One of the eight is described as being in critical condition, the others are described as being stable. There is speculation that more bodies will be discovered when it is safe to reenter the building.

I’m not going to speculate on Stanford’s motives, but the pattern of attacks on churches go way beyond senseless.

Does anyone besides me and her parents remember Secoriea Turner? She was an eight year old girl killed when her mother drove into the parking lot of the Wendy’s where Rayshard Brooks had been killed, not realizing that armed BLM thugs had declared the log to be “their” turf. The BLm thugs drove off the family with gunfire, and s round struck little Secoria, killing her.

Last Friday her killer was sentenced to life in prison, a mere five years and almost three months after little Secoria was murdered. What sent a chill up my back was a report that her killer still doesn’t think he did anything wrong.

@bagoh2o: So how do the same culprits keep getting reelected?

Inertia, plus "I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine" deals between politicians and local interest groups are hard to fight. People make only a handful of life decisions, such as college, marriage, children, HOMEOWNERSHIP, divorce, and retirement. Once they get to children and homeownership they don't want anything to change. Boxed in. Need security and predictability.

Politics and ideologies involve abstract ideals that are largely set by age 25. They are then back-burnered unless things get really dysfunctional (i.e., 2016 Trump; 2024 Democrat defectors). Businesses with long-term employees get similarly locked up, petty, and resistant to even superficial changes.

Portlanders and other blue city residents who live in the suburbs may never go downtown or encounter the problems. So, 75% of any city is "fine."

Just came back from seeing One Battle After Another. Interesting film. Short version: Natural Born Killers meets Dr Strangelove meets 70s Clint Eastwood, maybe?

Of course, the heroes are revolutionaries whose manifesto seems to consist mostly of facilitating illegal immigration. And the villains are white anglo males of the MAGA persuasion. Still, I was entertained by Sean Penn as a cartoon paramilitary leader, kind of like the one played by Woody Harrelson in one of the Planet Of The Apes movies. He got himself jacked for this movie - seriously, his arms are as big around as my neck - but also is humble enough to allow a line that makes fun of him wearing a tight shirt and lifts in his shoes. So not that bad of a guy. Maybe he really is Jeff Spicolli.

And there are a lot of hot black women. Including a character called Junglepussy who walks along a bank counter in a miniskirt, waving a gun around. I was hoping to see her jungle pussy (or pussy jungle - either one).

DiCaprio is to be commended for finally playing a beat up old guy. His character also does some Archie Bunker-like whining about postmodern snowflake culture, which carries more weight since he is a leftie fugitive terrorist. Benicio del Toro may be the real star of this thing, though. He also has gleefully made the transition from sex symbol to rumpled dad. He's kind of an Hispanic Mr Wolf who calmly comes up with practical solutions for impossible situations. Which of course include protecting illegals from ICE.

Oh, and one of the Haim sisters has a brief role as a terrorist. Equal time for hot Jewish girls!

So I'd recommend the movie, even though it does promote wokery. At least it has the common decency to make its politics blatant and its heroes flawed. CC, JSM

@Quayle: in Utah there is a counter culture of people who were raised in the LDS church but no longer practice or believe

Indeed. In any heavily religious community there are die-hard rebels and the opposite too. Some people really, truly don't believe or wish to follow a given set of church rules but can't break away emotionally. They constantly justify, rationalize, bemoan, and react to the rules. The Italians are said to be cynical about the Catholic chuch, per its long history of corruption and scandals.

Satanic imagey and theming became a thing in rock & roll, pop-art, and tattoos by the 1970s. When based on the Christian Devil or Satan, it could not exist other than as a reaction to the pre-existing content of Christianity.

Sill, chuches mainly serve as a thin coat of paint on routine human violence and crime. Antisocial personalities and psychopaths are universal and find ways to do their thing with or without religion. All "love your neighbor" Christian cultures may mitigate violence relative to some other religions and secular cultures too.

I don't blame "every single person on the left" for "ALL political violence." I blame the perpetrators of violence for the violence they perpetrate. But I don't excuse the people who celebrate the violence for their reaction. And I definitely see a link between a lot of political violence and the decade-long mantra that we're living through 1930s Germany - isn't anybody going to do something?!?

You have tried to equate Trump's "enemy from within" with many prominent Democrat and media figures' "Trump is another Hitler,." "Trump supporters are Nazis," "this or that event was exactly like a Nazi rally," "let us count the ways that Trump and Hitler are exactly alike," "see how fascism descends on us," isn't ANYBODY going to do SOMETHING?!?

""Enemy from within" doesn't evoke the Holocaust; it barely evokes a reaction at all - it's semantically milquetoast. Look at Inga, positively gleeful and dancing on the people of my faith who were killed, burned to death.

And Inga's claims don't make sense. Why would anyone upset at Kirk's death attack members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? Kirk's shooter wasn't a member of the Church. He had been raised in the Church... but very, very clearly had left the Church and its teachings, rebelling about as much as you could. A Judas character, at best. Why would anyone sane blame the Church for Kirk's death? Indeed, Kirk had just gotten done praising the Church barely a couple of minutes prior to his death at the hands of one of Inga's crazed leftists.

There are two possibilities: either this was not someone on the right, just pretending to be on the right. Or, that person was mislead by all of the people on the left like Inga trying to claim that Kirk's murderer was a faithful member of the Church.

So if this that second option, I hold Inga and her ilk responsible for their lies, their misinformation, and their hatred that spread anti-LDS hate trying to blame the Church for Kirk's murder instead of their own culpability.

Meanwhile, Inga, will you shut your trap for once and have a teeny bit of respect for the dead as they bring out more dead children, burned to death from someone infected by your side's hatred?

“I’m running for city council and I was canvassing,” Johns said. “I came across a gentleman who was very friendly. We just started to talk, and after a short while the conversation went to the Church of Latter-day Saints. He made the position multiple times that Mormons are the anti-Christ.”

Yes, many evangelical Christians consider the Mormon Church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) to be a heretical group because its core doctrines diverge significantly from those of historical, mainstream Christianity. Key issues include differing views on the nature of God, the divinity of Jesus, the authority of the Bible, and the necessity of extra-biblical scripture, such as the Book of Mormon.

Yes, Howard, I know. Believe me, I know. So does Quayle, the other poster here who is a member of the Church. I routinely pass by their protestors outside of significant Church events.

But while we disagree, the violence has dramatically dipped as most Christians have recognized that while, say, Baptists and Mormons disagree theologically, the true enemy is the followers of Ba'al and Moloch and other demons that the left worships.

Think of Evangelicals and Mormons much like the Jews and the Samaritains... we aren't really fond of each other, but the Jews much prefer Samaratians over followers of Astarte.

Very deceiving. SOME MAGAs might claim that. Many/most do not. Plenty of Mormons are MAGA. And I have never heard as many Christmas carols than when I lived in SLC. The name of the church is “The Church of Jesus Christ, of the Latter Day Saints”. Which is to say, mainstream Protestant with an additional book of revelations tacked on.

But, yes, some Christians don’t believe that Mormons are Christians because of that. But then some Protestants don’t believe that Roman Catholics are Christians because of their made up (non-scriptural) additions to their theology (e.g. “sacred traditions”), as well as their idolatry and polytheism (Saints, etc), priestly caste, Papacy, and Papal infallibility. No doubt, many RC believe that about Protestants, because of their rejection of these things. We fought to the death over these differences for neigh on 400 years. During the 19th Century, Mormons faced that in this country maybe more than any other sect. Luckily, that is mostly behind us now.

So your attempts to score points against "The MAGA" is doomed to failure, since that isn't the reason this guy would attack a church.

On the other hand, your side hates Christians as a political doctrine, and your LGBT "friends" especially hate Christian churches. They do, in fact, attack Christian churches as a matter of politics. Like Jane's Revenge... a group you are very quiet about, yet a leftist terror group that committed at least 70 arson attacks on Catholic churches in one year since Roe was overturned. And it's not just Evangelicals and MAGAs who don't consider them Christian, it's mainstream theologists. Trump, BTW, isn't a theologist.

One of the core beliefs of Christianity is belief in the Holy Trinity. Father, Son, and Holy Ghost (or Holy Spirit) as one entity. LDS reject that. They're not the only church to do so. And those that reject that belief are not Christian no matter how much they insist they are.

It doesn't make them bad people- just not Christian. Since they claim to be Christian, but aren't, you could use the loaded word "heretic".

Only Christ gets to affirm which individual person is a true cross-bearing Christian following Him. Not the "mainstream" scholars, preachers for money, or anyone else with a bible and an opinion. Whenever God's people have gone astray, he always calls and sends a messenger to call them back, with the authority to say "Thus sayeth the Lord." The LDS message to the Christian world is that God has sent and is sending just such messengers right now. And all you need is the faith to test the word - to even consider that it might be true. All the other signs and indicators are there, and I'm pretty sure that you know it.

And how joyful it will be when you recognize, in the extremity of the last days that are coming to us all, that God already sent "Joseph" ahead long before the need was manifest. As soon as the U.S. Constitution was established to protect the fledgling plant, God started the work. Joseph Smith spoke to the Christian world and said that he had dreams and visions, and they killed him for it - they sold him into slavery into Egypt, so to speak. But what he started remained and is increasing in scope and strength. When the famine of the word finally overtakes you, then you will realize, with great joy and weeping for us all, that God and Christ already prepared the storehouse of the word necessary to sustain His people through the last days.

Well, yes.

Of course, since this has devolved into a theological discussion, we must recall Heinlein's words, mostly paraphrased since it's from memory: "It's impossible for any two people to have a rational discussion on religion since all religion is based on faith."

I was baptized Methodist. I can become an adult convert to the Roman Catholic Church without being baptized- my one baptism is recognized by them. LDS must be baptized into the RC Church- their baptism isn't recognized. All of the mainstream Christian Churches can trace an unbroken line of succession of their clergy back to one of the apostles- usually intersecting with the Roman Church at one point. A lot of the independent "Christian" churches of today have self proclaimed pastors never ordained by any denomination. This appears to be one of these: https://www.cityofgodworldprayercenter.org/
I can find no information on ordination of the pastor. Interestingly they are located in Palmyra NY, home of the LDS. Seems a lot of the USA's homegrown religions came from CNY where I now live. Maybe it's something in the water... Anyhow, their website does describe what appear to be mainstream Protestant beliefs. Some would argue without an unbroken line of succession they are not Christian- I'm undecided on that.

So your beliefs on who is or isn't Christian are as valid- or invalid- as mine. One of those many things on which "We agree to disagree" is the best way to go. Don't believe in the Holy Trinity? You're not Christian. And my opinion is shared by many.

Vance చెప్పారు...

The left's heroes are George Floyd and the Rosenbergs. The rights heroes are Audie Murphy and Charlie Kirk.

Also: The "Holy Trinity" as a concept is essentially the Nicene Creed.

To say you cannot be a True Christian without believeing in the Nicene Creed rules out all the Christians prior to that point, who clearly did not believe in the doctrine espoused in that creed.

If I reject the Nicene Creed, I can yet claim to be a Christian, Gospace. And Jesus Himself said that the Father is greater than He was... so Jesus rejected the Nicene Creed. Would that make Him not a Christian?

Who is Pastor Mark Driscoll?

“Driscoll has used his platform on social media and his podcast to rally Christian voters for Trump. In October 2024, he publicly encouraged his followers to vote for Trump, noting that Trump is "surrounded with some wonderful believers" who could guide him in his faith.”

What did Driscoll say about Mormons?

“Pastor Mark Driscoll has repeatedly stated that he considers Mormonism, or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), to be a cult and a "demonic deception," not a valid form of Christianity. He has publicly claimed that the Book of Mormon is "pure fiction" and that the angel Moroni was a demon.

Key statements
Mormonism as a "demonic cult": Driscoll has described Mormonism as a "demonic cult" that is "not Christianity, it's not even close". He stated on X (formerly Twitter) that "There will be zero Mormons in Heaven. It is a demonic cult. A literal demon is on the top of every Mormon building".
Theologically distinct: He distinguishes between the sociological definition of a cult and a "theological" one, asserting that Mormonism's significant deviations from historic Christian orthodoxy, particularly on the nature of God and salvation, make it a theological cult.

The LDS Jesus is a "false god": Driscoll argues that Mormons worship a "false god," not the "real God of the Bible". He adds that calling Mormons "brothers and sisters in a common faith" would diminish the importance of "lovingly speaking with Mormons about the errors of their belief".

The Book of Mormon is "fiction": In February 2025, Driscoll posted that the Book of Mormon is "pure fiction," has "zero historical basis," and was "inspired by a demon".

The "Jezebel spirit": In April 2024, Driscoll was escorted off stage at a Christian conference after claiming that a sword-swallowing performance was a platform for the "Jezebel spirit," a demon he has also linked to Mormonism and promoted in a book.”

The intellectual climate itself was apparently a self-sustaining, independent actor on the Russian socio-political stage. The strange thing about the Russian Revolution is that the Social Revolutionaries (SRs) were the terrorists, killing tsarist officials across the country. The Bolsheviks robbed banks to get money, but concentrated on organization. Yet when SR Kerensky was in charge of the country he tried to abide by democratic procedures. Lenin and the Bolsheviks, who had generally avoided individual terrorism, imposed state terror on a massive scale. Perhaps that was what all the organizing was for and what it lead to.

It only takes one insane person to kill, but when there is a sizeable response of "yeah, that's understandable" I get worried about our society. And there *was* such a response. I don't think even Inga can deny that.

I'm a professor at a state university (of a very red state), and when I discussed this with students, there was a concerning number who had that attitude.

I'm also a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I couldn't say things any better than Quayle does, so I won't try. I also think Vance speaks for me when he said that we feel more secure in a society dominated by evangelical culture than we would in a culture dominated by the American left. If Inga is trying to use this incident to pit Mormons against evangelicals, that's an effort doomed to fail.

I'm anxious to learn (assuming we eventually will) what the motives were in this case. He apparently had a grudge against the church. What was the source of that grudge? Whatever it was, I'm pretty sure it *wasn't* anything Trump or anyone else prominent on the political right has said.

On the other hand, it's pretty clear you can trace the motivations of the kid who shot Charlie Kirk directly to the rhetoric common to the American left. When will anyone prominent on that side of the isle (other than Fetterman, for whom I have growing respect) come forward and renounce the reckless use of "Nazi", "fascist", "racist", etc?

In regard to Gospace's comment about central NY state and "something in the water," look up Burned-Over District.

Proof that even at age 70 you can learn something new every day. As aware as I was of the various Great Revival movements, I wasn't aware how thoroughly saturated CNY was- or why. Interesting how the opening of the Erie Canal contributed to the Second Great Awakening. Totally unrelated to any religion, a great engineering feat contributed to a religious movement...

Still might have something to do with the water...

Guess what I saw on various social media from MAGA people today?

“Mormons aren’t Christian’s!” What is that supposed to mean, that it’s ok to kill Mormons because after all they aren’t really Christians? A Mormon killedCharlie Kirk? Don’t say that the killer was MAGA! It was shocking to see such a reaction from the right even after all the evidence that the killer was indeed a MAGA. After the first reaction claiming that “Mormons aren’t Christian” was to blame the left.

When will someone prominent on your side of the aisle and here in these comments sections stop calling people on the left every vile name that they can think of including Communist, Fascist, murderers, etc etc. When will Trump himself stop inciting violence against his opponents who he says proudly that he hates? Who he calls “The enemy from within”, who he says he doesn’t wish well? Guess who Trump wished well? Ghislaine Maxwell. That tells a story, doesn’t it?

I don’t want Evangelical Christians and Mormons attacking each other. We saw what happened to the innocent worshippers in the Mormon temple in Michigan when that sort of war starts. Trump loves his war talk, Dept. of War, war fighters, etc. He sends our own military troops to American citizens to attack Americans. He brags about it with memes on his Truth Social showing, helicopters, smoke and destruction, saying he’s sending his troops to large cities who have Democratic Governors and Mayors.

Here’s my suggestion, take the plank out of your own eye before trying to take the splinter out of mine. The Left is tired of your hypocrisy and will no longer tolerate it.

Did you see any lefties here celebrate the death of Kirk? No, you didn’t. Time to stop your hypocrisy.

Oh, go fuck yourself. There were thousands upon thousands of your fellow leftists gleefully celebrating Kirk's death. Just because a half-dozen on this board did not means jack.

The "Mormon's aren't Christians" argument has been going on for generations. 150 years ago it was the inspiration for violence, but it hasn't inspired blood lust in a large number of people for a long long time. Sunday was awful, but it was an abberation. While you can see a few people insist on those three words today, I don't think you'd find anyone using those words to say Sunday's attack was understandable, or that the Mormon congregation "had it coming". There's no comparison between the reaction today and the reaction to Kirk's death.

And nobody here is saying "don't say the shooter was MAGA". He was. He was also looney. We'll see more (I hope) in coming days, but I doubt his political alignment had anything to do with his motivations in this attack. That can't be said for the Kirk assassin.

And yes, I do wish that some here on this blog would tone down the name-calling. It would make it much more enjoyable to read the comments. But I haven't seen anybody shooting up anybody else because of what Achilles says here. The Minnesota shootings were possibly (likely?) an example of a looney being influenced by overheated rhetoric about abortion. If so, that's awful, and a sign that the right needs to be more careful about the "baby killer" talk. Still, the scale and reach of the "baby killer" rhetoric is hardly a match to the drumbeat of "nazi" and "fascist" we're treated to.

Trump's remarks at the memorial service were very obviously self-deprecating humor. Your continued use of them to support the point you're trying to make betrays the dishonesty of your argument.

Inga చెప్పారు...

“Oh, go fuck yourself.”

You first. MAGAs didn’t ever think one of their own would be something even worse than they accuse the left of being. YOU own this guy, not us.

Or I could be like Achilles and just say YOU murdered those poor Mormons! You are as guilty as if it was you who did it, after all you’re a MAGA too. You don’t deserve any Constitutional protections!

And it’s clear that you would find excuses for MAGA even when a MAGA kills your OWN people, your fellow Mormons.
