"Every other recent president has said that he saw his role as transcending partisanship at least some of the time, to serve as leader of all Americans..."

"... even those who disagreed with him. George H.W. Bush talked of ushering in a 'kinder and gentler nation.' Mr. Clinton vowed to be the 'repairer of the breach.' The younger Mr. Bush spoke of being 'a uniter, not a divider.' Barack Obama rejected the idea of a red America and blue America, saying there was only 'the United States of America.' Joseph R. Biden Jr. called for ending 'this uncivil war.' None of them succeeded at achieving such lofty aspirations, and each of them to different degrees played the politics of division at times. Politics, after all, is about division — debating big ideas vigorously until one side wins an election or carries the vote in Congress. But none of them practiced the politics of division as ferociously and consistently as Mr. Trump...."

Who is taking an accurate measure of the consistency and ferocity of the divisiveness of the various Presidents?

My prompt to ChatGPT: "What are the most ferociously divisive things Presidents have said in all of American history? Give me a top 10, with just the quotes, not the explanations."

The list [NOTE: I did not verify the accuracy of these quotes. What follows is with ChatGPT gave me and the entire thing could be hallucination. Proceed with care!]

1. John Adams (1798): “If the people ever let the Democrats rule, the country will be deluged with the floodgates of immorality.” [NOTE: That is such poor English that it’s virtually inconceivable that it comes from John Adams.]

2. Andrew Jackson (1834): “The Bank is trying to kill me, but I will kill it! … They would destroy our institutions and corrupt our free government.”

3. Abraham Lincoln (1860 campaign): “You cannot be for slavery and for freedom. The two are incompatible; the one must perish.”

4. Grover Cleveland (1888): “Party success means party loyalty, and party loyalty means hostility to the enemy.”

5. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1936): “Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me — and I welcome their hatred.”

6. Harry Truman (1948 campaign): “The Republicans … have begun to nail the American consumer to the wall with spikes of greed.”

7. Lyndon B. Johnson (1964): “The Republican Party feeds a fox every night to harass the nation’s chickens.”

8. Richard Nixon (1972): “The press is the enemy. The professors are the enemy. The establishment is the enemy. The enemies must be understood.”

9. George W. Bush (2001): “You are either with us, or you are with the terrorists.”

10. Donald Trump (2020): “The radical left is trying to destroy our country. If they win, America will be a socialist hellhole.”

ADDED: That was the ChatGPT list. I'd written Grok before, because I actually asked Grok first, but it was taking so long that I brought ChatGPT into the search. Eventually, Grok came through, but its first effort was all about racial division, such as Woodrow Wilson saying "Segregation is not a humiliation but a benefit, and ought to be so regarded by you gentlemen" and Lincoln's "I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races." I got more specific and Grok made a list that had things on it that weren't even ferocious, like "The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they're ignorant; it's just that they know so much that isn't so" (Ronald Reagan).  So that's it for Grok on this little project.

Charlie Kirk is dead because a MAGA raised kid, from a gun nut family murdered him. It’s almost like worshipping a sociopath carnival barker and emulating his morality isn’t a good environment for forming solid morals.

Why don't you tell us how much you blathered in these threads for Melissa Hortman (and her husband) and Paul Pelosi? Not top mention that way more than ten thousand people are murdered in this country every year.

Until you can show us that you have a record re giving any Fs for murdered people sans your political bias, how about you STFU because we all know that your hyped up so-called concern for victims of murder is bullshit.

But, maybe now you've seen the error of your ways. Okay, tell us that you regret never fussing about the attacks on libs, likewise your lack of daily outrage re the murders that go on all the time as these murders leave devastated families, w/o any attention from you.

Or, just keep being a partisan shit spreader.

buwaya ने कहा…

"Gun nut family"?
They hunted, which is very common in rural/semi rural parts of your country. You have immense numbers of game animals and immense numbers of people who go out every year to shoot them and fill their freezers, including plenty of Democrats.
The worlds largest army is that which goes into the woods in deer season - Often said about just Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin, or Michigan; take the US as a whole and its definitely true.
The rifle used is not a "gun nut" weapon, its a bolt action deer rifle. Not subject to control in any US state nor is it on any proposed controls by any gun reformers.

Buw,

The question of what makes a "gun nut" is interesting.

I have friends with many dozens of guns and they will talk about the details of this or that gun for hours. I suppose they are gun nuts. But it's like I'm a car nut because I have dozens of cars.

FTR, most of these folks also hunt with bows and muzzleloaders (depending on the season.) And they have fancy fishing boats. As Buwaya says, I sure some folks do this sort of hunting/fishing to get food that they eat. But it is worth noting that some of the folks that do this are not doing it because of necessity. Especially re the fishing. If you spend a quarter of a million for a boat and trailer, and then you think about the time you spend going out and getting the fish....it's obvious that you'd be better off, financially, to fly to Noma in Copenhagen for a. meal. A lot of folks that hunt are doing it for fun, not because they are starving.

TeaBagHag ने कहा…

Yes, I’m familiar with hunters hunting. The MAGA family in question had their social media profiles filled with photos of them gleefully posing with all sorts of heavy duty, non squirell killing machinery. All of which was scrubbed when the MAGAt assassin acted on the values on which he was raised.

"Ya gotta admit. You guys can't seem to control yourselves around firearms. Even after all the laws you passed to prevent people like you from owning firearms."

Political assassinations in the US are quite rare. There are plenty of other murders over personal, commercial (drugs), or random disputes, or sheer insanity. The US has 4x to 5x the European murder rate.
But murder for political reasons is something else. And the murder of C.Kirk was precisely over a political dispute. And he was a very high profile person, with a significant effect on past and future elections. He was an important piece on the game board. Thats why he mattered, he was not just any Evangelical preacher.

In a statement texted from Yvette Hoffman to US Senator Amy Klobuchar, who represents Minnesota, she said she was shot eight times and her husband was shot nine times.

Sophie and Colin Hortman, the children of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, issued a statement Monday calling on people to honor their parents’ legacy by standing up “for what you believe in, especially if that thing is justice and peace.”

“We are devastated and heartbroken at the loss of our parents, Melissa and Mark. They were the bright lights at the center of our lives, and we can’t believe they are gone. Their love for us was boundless. We miss them so much,” the release said. “We want everyone to know that we are both safe and with loved ones. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support we have received, and we appreciate your respect for our family’s privacy as we grieve.”

The Hortman children emphasized the legacy that their parents will leave behind.

“Our parents touched so many lives, and they leave behind an incredible legacy of dedication to their community that will live on in us, their friends, their colleagues and co-workers, and every single person who knew and loved them,” the release said.

The Hortmans asked that people do an act of kindness in the memory of their parents’ commitment to service, sharing a list of suggestions, “something, whether big or small, to make our community just a little better for someone else.”

I personally would prefer that the Boelter execution was public. I think what he did and his punishment should be a lesson that is remembered by all 6th graders for a generation.

Apparently you think what Boelter did , a man who said Tim Waltz told him to kill these democrats, makes it OK to kill Charlie Kirk.

We hear you. We understand what you are saying. We believe you when you say we should all be killed and that it is OK because of what Boelter did.

Apparently, bogus former law clerk, you have forgotten that saying vicious, rude things...including "cheerleading" murder... are all protected by free speech.

So it will be PERFECTLY LEGAL for those people to sue you, jointly and severally, for "tortious interference".

"Tortious interference is a common law tort allowing a claim for damages against a defendant who wrongfully and intentionally interferes with the plaintiff's contractual or business relationships."

"Tortious interference occurs when a third party intentionally and improperly disrupts a contract or business relationship between other parties, causing economic harm."

buwaya ने कहा…

The Minnesota murders/shootings remind me a lot of the Moscone/Milk case in San Francisco (1978). This happened a few years before I showed up there. That too was a political assassination, but of only local impact. Of course, "local" was in an important place. The purpose of the murders was not political as such, on the part of the killer, but personal. Revenge over personal failure.
San Francisco was in a difficult situation then, socially and politically. Jim Jones for instance was mixed up with both Moscone and Milk, but that had nothing (directly) to do with the murders. Ref, and a fine book, "Season of the Witch", D.Talbot
It got better, Feinstein (the late Senator) was a very successful mayor.

Ooh, good point. Only fifty years separated them. Heck, if we had waited till 1900 or even 1870, the lethality of the weapons would have been much greater. The Union would probably still have had the advantage, from both manufacturing the weapons and understanding that position and volume of fire are more important than elan and bravery. CC, JSM

wtf would ‘unity’ look like? Trump granting citizenship to 10-15 million illegals then locking himself up?

Getting back to the original subject of the post - exactly this. How was Trump, "literally worse than Hitler™," supposed to "unite" a nation in which at least a third of the voting population believe - thanks to daily indoctrination - that he is "literally worse than Hitler™" and a not insignificant portion of the "independent" vote is at least willing to entertain that notion, since it's what they hear and see every day in the news? What, exactly, could Trump do to "unite the nation"?

Also - le D, you are truly a POS for using the deaths of ten thousand people to try to smear your political opponents. Which side - tell me, do - actually behaves as if it cares about the deaths of these often young, often black men at the hands of other often young, often black men? The side that pretends it's white cops killing them? The side that ignores the ones who aren't young and black, but rather old and Asian? The side that, when the victim is young, white, and female, urges "empathy" for the mentally ill and obviously dangerous perpetrator?

Tell us more about who cares more for the victims of murder, you tool.
