Donald Trump to meet Putin in Alaska as he signals Ukraine may need to cede land ~ FT

Trump’s peace plan sounds very similar to Putin’s wish list.

Given their past records it is a challenge to believe that anything either Trump or Putin agree would necessarily be honored. Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize, but is not bothered about the details, Putin wants a breather to give Russia time to rest, regroup and return to the attack.

Zelenskiy (or is it Zelenskyyyy or Zelenskiyiy?) wants to fight to the last Ukrainian, before he goes to the South of France, or Miami Beach, or Tel Aviv and gets a big kiss from Miss Lindsey for "Killing Ruskiees".

Putin's peace terms seem pretty reasonable to me. Personally, I think that the only way for lasting peace is for Russian tanks to advance to the outskirts of Kiev and enforce regime change.

Achilles చెప్పారు...

I look forward to Ukraine having elections again. Zelensky is polling below 30%. Dictators are usually unpopular.

90% of the people in Eastern Ukraine voted for Yanukovich and those areas are currently occupied by Russia. Since 2014 they have wanted to leave Ukraine anyways. The final outcome of the Ukraine War is pretty clear except for the crying.

It will only end with some kind of guarantee that Ukraine never joins NATO.

The only somewhat interesting question is how long NATO will take to break it's promise not to try to add Ukraine after it makes this promise.

RCOCEAN II చెప్పారు...

Its good that trump is talking and meeting with Putin, but I doubt much will be accomplished in terms of ending the war. Zelenskyyy knows the Euros are backing him 110 percent and so are the warhawks (almost all D's and R's in congress). Hey, its not their money. And its not their lives. Scum like Miss Lindsey or the D senators don't care about Ukrainian or Russian lives anymore than they care about Gazans.

Hell, these shits don't care about American Lives! But as long as the libtards and Neo-Cons keep electing them, they'll keep funding war and killing. Even if it has zero to do with the USA.

Lets fact it. 'mucricans love war. What did the average American get out of all the wars after Teddy Roosevelt charged out San Juan Hill. Nothing.

But everytime the scum who lead us wants to go to war, they all fall in line and start bloviating about how we have to "fall in line an' support our Commander-in-Chief" and "by God, if we don't stop them [fill in current foreign enemy] why they'll conquer the world!!!"

And the "bleeding hear liberals" are the worst. They'd murder babies with a kitchen knife if its the "party line" and hurts those "Goddamn republicans".

Aggie చెప్పారు...

My take, and I'm no expert in world affairs, is that Trump has spent the first few months of his term reminding the world just exactly who has the biggest economy - and he has realigned expectations on what the future of international trade is going to look like. It's going to look like a lot more stuff being made here, and a lot less US money will be flowing into the coffers of Europe, and there will be a lot less in American defense spending propping up NATO as well - not for free, anyway.

So that means Europe needs to pull on their eyeshades and sleeve garters, and start figuring out where their money is going to come from, when it comes to supporting foreign adventures in Eastern Europe. I bet they will fold, and Zelenksy and the rest will have to take their giant stash of embezzled funds somewhere else, and retire a centi-millionaires, most of them.

Again, I'm no expert, but it seems to me that our I.C. led the charge in the overthrow of a duly-elected, but Russian-sympathetic leader in 2014. Victoria Nuland's work. And now, consequentially, Russia has said 'no more' to NATO encroachment, and backed it up with this 3 year war of miserable attrition. They will not be disposed to fold. As Zorg said, in The Fifth Element as he stepped into the battle zone: 'I know this music'. The Russians know this music, they went to the conservatory of Napoleon and Hitler. They can endure longer than anyone else on Earth, while the dilettantes wear themselves out. Ukraine could maybe have negotiated peace and retained the Crimean penisula, but now? Thank Obama, Joe Biden, and don't forget a special little note to Victoria Nuland. They have turned the Ukraine into NATO's sacrificial lamb. Trump will get peace and Russia will get their (historically / culturally Russian) Ukrainian territory.

Not even one scan of the actual illustration might be believable (but it's not), there seems to be not even one mention of it indexed anywhere on the entire internet that does not refer back to or originate from that one NYT article. Perhaps Trump should offer up Greenland or Gaza and Lebanon instead of ceding occupied Ukraine (Trump called the giveaway "swapping territory") in order to bring about a cease fire but nothing really matters to autocrats anyway. There really is no way to explain this war or any other war. When VVP wants more stupid territory he will simply invade again.

The economic damage that results from war can only happen out when autocratic hate or ego brings about killing off others can never be explained, nor can improved humanitarianism be achieved when powerful autocrats play blood games.

So they will meet in Alaska, the Big Guy says, but that likely means Anchorage where Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC) and Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson are located.

Two 15-year-olds were arrested in Washington last weekend in connection with the attempted carjacking and beating of one of the most prominent members of the Department of Government Efficiency. So our brilliant president ordered a crackdown on crime in DC.

“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore.”

On Friday night, a White House official said Thursday night’s operations included arrests for possession of two stolen firearms, suspected fentanyl, and marijuana. The official said that more than 120 members of various federal agencies — including the Secret Service, the FBI, and the U.S. Marshals Service — were to be on duty Friday night, thereby increasing the complement of federal officers involved. All this was to be incurred because of two fifteen-year-olds' dirty deed on a little DOGE.

But nobody saw any extra cops on duty overnight Friday, except officers from Metro DC and Capitol forces.

If you’re worried about the residents of the Russian controlled areas, remember that the territory was Russian even before the Russian Revolution, and that the war started as a civil war sparked by the Russian speaking areas refusing to accept the coup we backed. They have been fighting for freedom from the Ukrainian regime for over a decade. What you really should worry about is what the Ukrainians will do to the residents, whom they see as enemy peoples, if they are given control over them, which they have never had up to now.

Maybe you should read about the trade union building massacre in Odessa, and remember that the Ukrainians did not even bother to investigate who was responsible, because the authorities already knew, and approved.

And, I often start a movie at night, fall asleep immediately . . . so the resume button does not necessarily mean I did not actually like it. Or, my wife bailed on it . . . but I might really like it since our tastes are wildly divergent.

ImTay (6:47am):
"What you really should worry about is what the Ukrainians will do to the residents, whom they see as enemy peoples, if they are given control over them, which they have never had up to now."

This is demonstrably false. Ukraine has recaptured two large areas held by the Russians for many months: eastern Kharkiv oblast in September 2022, including the towns of Kupyansk and Izyum, and the whole northern third of Kherson oblast in November 2022, including the city of Kherson and everything north of the Dnipro. No massacres occurred in either area. Well, none by the Ukrainians. They found a mass grave in Izyum with 447 corpses, almost all civilians and many of them showing signs of torture. They also found several torture chambers in the previously-occupied areas, all built on the same plan with the same equipment, so it wasn't just freelance low-level commanders acting like psychos.

The fact is that all of the torture, rape, and murder is being done by the Russians to the Ukrainians. You can see the difference in the prisoner exchanges, where the returned Russians are all plump and healthy and many of the Ukrainians are 80-100 pounds underweight, some with crooked limbs because broken bones were never treated. Ukrainians under Russian occupation are also beaten if they're heard speaking their native language, and all the Ukrainian books in the libraries have been destroyed.

Everything else you and Achilles (8:28pm) wrote about Ukraine is equally false. For instance, the lowest approval rate I've been able to find for Zelenskyy is not "below 30%" (Achilles) but 57% in February, and he's usually around 67%. If elections could be held without massive slaughter by Russian drones, he would almost certainly win easily. By the way, the people most likely to run against him, Zaluzhnyi, Poroshenko, and Tymoshenko, who all hate each other, and two of whom hate him, agree that elections cannot be held under Russian bombing.

This is why since the war started you could with absolute certainty know that Russia was going to take these territories from Ukraine.

90% of the voters in those provinces voted for Yanukovich. When the coup happened in 2014 Ukraine was broken.

It is sad to watch Weevil cry about this. His assertion that Ukraine has committed no atrocities since 2014 is just pathetic.

I agree this is really strange. I also noted that we "bought" Alaska from Russia rather than paying back a "debt" for Russian support in one of our wars that we were never going to pay back.

Trump knows Putin is a history buff. I believe this just signals we are going to buy peace with investment and trade deals.

Dr Weevil చెప్పారు...

Stupid liar Achilles can't acknowledge that even the opposition in Ukraine agrees that they can't have elections while the war continues. Polling places make perfect targets: they have known locations that have to be advertised in advance and are guaranteed to be full of people at specific times on election day. A nation that bombs apartment blocks, hospitals, grocery stores, and train stations every day and night would certainly bomb polling stations. Further, it might be possible to arrange for the Ukrainians living in exile around the world to vote, but the millions under Russian occupation certainly cannot, though I'm sure Putin would promise to arrange a vote there.

Again, everything Achilles says about Zelenskyy is a damned lie. The only "political opponents, critical media, and even priests and religious figures" who have been jailed are the ones caught providing targeting coordinates to the Russians, or delivering bombs themselves.

Finally, can Achilles name one of these atrocities Ukraine has supposedly committed? I've mentioned quite a few the Russians have done and continue to do. The Russians haven't even accused them of murdering or torturing prisoners, and the few instances of Ukrainians supposedly bombing civilian targets turned out to be incompetent Russians bombing their own people. When Ukraine withdraw from Kursk oblast, no mass graves were discovered - unlike Izyum and Bucha.
