"I gave the zoo my daughter’s beloved pony to be fed to the lions."

Headline at the London Times. Subheadline: "Aalborg Zoo in Denmark caused outrage by asking for animals to be donated for meat. One mother says she has no regrets."

From the text:

"I gave Angelina the various options and she chose the one with the zoo, because it made the most sense.... She had previously watched one of my horses being taken away by the vet to be euthanised, and it was a bad experience for her. She said that this time she wanted to follow the food chain. She wanted Chicago 57 to benefit other animals.”

Sohl was present when the pony was humanely killed with a bolt gun. “There was a zookeeper standing there cuddling and kissing him — as if it was me standing with him,” she said. “I got to say a final goodbye.” She was told afterwards that his carcass had been fed to the zoo’s lions.

And here's our discussion from last week about the Aalborg Zoo eating-the-pets program.

ADDED: "I hate anyone that ever had a pony when they were growing up."

"I gave Angelina the various options and she chose the frat house, because it made the most sense.... She had previously watched one of my goldfish flushed down the toilet and it was a bad experience for her. She said that this time she wanted to have fun. She wanted Bubbles to go to a party house.”
Sohl was present when the beer bong went around. “There was like a future Senator wearing a kilt, holding him by the tail and kissing him — as if it was me standing with him,” she said. “I got to say a final goodbye.” She was told afterwards that the boy threw up into a toilet and Bubbles was flushed anyway.

The horse mentioned in the article was old and had medical issues. But horses do live 20-25 years and little girls who age out of them suddenly leave a horse with plenty of life yet.

This is a good option at the time of putting the animal down, but it will be abused by those who suddenly find their perfectly healthy horse to be a burden.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

So its horse day at Althouse. Dead is dead. Whether your horse is to be killed and buried or killed and fed to a "predator" doesn't make much difference. Except to the predator.

I was given a tour of the back operations at the Wild Animal Sanctuary outside of Keenesburg CO - about a decade ago. Pat Craig's operation of mercy. They rescue & rehabilitate and care for wild animals that were kept in horrible zoos or awful cages by horrible humans. (from all over the world) It's many acres large. Anyway - the feeding operation consisted of donated meets that were mixed with vitamins and then frozen into giant cubes.
It was very impressive.

I live where a lot of people have horses or run horse boarding stables. I also ride a little bit myself. It’s always little girls who fall in love with horses and have to have one. They get older and lose interest and parents who bought a horse are stuck with $7,000 bill each year. Smarter parents lease a horse.

This is really something I have no issue with. Harkening back to a time, oh I don’t know, maybe the 70’s and 80’s, when if yo lived anywhere outside the city, you did what you had to do for practical reasons.

During a period of some family dysfunction, I lived with and Aunt and Uncle and their 7 children on a 40 acre farm in a rural part of Parker County just west of Ft. Worth. I was in 3rd/4th grade at the time. We had a 4 acre garden, 3 dozen chickens, 20 or so head of cattle, a half dozen pigs and pretty much only went to store in Weatherford for the most basic stuff that we couldn’t supply from the land. We’d also hunt quail and dove during the season and the older boys went with my Uncle to a deer lease nearby for additional meet. Only my Uncle worked but he had a fairly well paying job as a dentist with his own practice.

I remember us slaughtering animals for meat, chickens and pigs mostly. I got the eggs every morning from the chickens for breakfast. We’d work the rows of various vegetables as they became ripe, pickled the hell out of stuff and deep froze a lot of it, too.

Back then, you didn’t spay or neuter your farm pets. That was a luxury expense and in general, we were far enough away from other farms that it wasn’t a big deal. But occasionally, one of the cats would get pregnant. We’d always keep a kitten or two to keep a supply of mousers but try to give away the rest. Those that we couldn’t give away would be put down by my older cousins with .22’s. Just the way things were.

Point being, it’s only recently that folks get their panties in a wad about stuff like this and I find it absurd. It’s the same with folks getting bent out of shape about hunting, not realizing hunters are the biggest contributors to conservation efforts, through taxes and charitable organizations like DU or CCA. When you are stewards of animals, whether in a zoo or in horse farm paddock, there is always a balance of interests for all the animals. As long as an animal put down humanely, I can see no reason to object to donating it for the health and well being of other animals. Good for that family for doing so.

In the 50s I attended 1-4 grades at Burgundy Farm School in Alexandria VA. Literally within sight of the Washington Monument. https://burgundyfarm.org/

In 3rd grade our class got a piglet. We raised the pig over the school year doing all the work, taking turns going in on weekends to feed it and grew it into a respectable size pig.

Then one sunny spring weekend at some sort of festival for the whole school and parents we hung the pig upside down from a tree, slit it's throat, butcherd it and cooked it over a pit.

Teachers and parents did a lot of the heavy lifting but us erd graders were hands on in the butchering.

My wife was absolutely appalled when I told her the story. She is convinced it traumatized and fucked me up for life.

I had to look up Burgundy Farm School as I lived nearby for 20+ years but never heard of it. It's labeled as "progressive" and integrated in 1950. It's near the top of Telegraph Hill. We lived due north on Seminary Hill, and the steep Telegraph ridge reflected the Beltway and RR noise back to us, a good mile away. I've seen a Civil War photo of Telegraph that was treeless, unlike now, but the Yankees may have cut them all down for sight lines for the forts that dotted the high ground.
Several people kept horses near us in the early 70s, which is hard to believe now, it's so crowded.

That line about ‘giving the daughter’s pony to the zoo to feed the lions’ took almost no time to take hold of the collective imagination as something worthy of praise. Would that have been considered as admirable back in the 70s and 80s? I don’t think so. I might be wrong.

BG म्हणाले...

I had a pony when I was young. Back then they weren't just for rich kids. We were farmers getting by. My dad cut down an old work horse bridle and I learned to ride bareback because saddles were too expensive. I fell off until I learned to stay on. To this day (I'm 72) I would rather ride saddleless. Kept Dusty until I was about 14, then had to sell him to size up.

But horses do live 20-25 years...
My second to last horse lived to be 28; my last one to 33. The "dead truck" came and picked it up when it died a natural death.
Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue in Rock Springs used to ask for "large animal feed" but the last I knew you had to haul it up there yourself and we didn't have any way. I just checked their website and I saw nothing about bringing old horses, cattle, etc., so maybe it's different now.

Northern Virginia has exploded over the years for sure. A neighbor remembered riding horses at stables where 66 now intersects with the Beltway (495). She was doing that as a little girl in the 60's. With all the intersections and EZ Pass crossovers and all that, there's segments there that are probably 16 lanes across, it's nuts.

Even though it's close in, in the 50's you'd reach true rural Virginia very quickly from Burgundy Farm School and all that. So I'm not surprised to learn about a kids' communal pig slaugther at the end of Be Nice To Pig season.

I notice they used the bolt to kill the pony. That makes it better since no medical residues from euthanasia drugs. Ponies generally live a lot longer than horses like up to 70 years old.
