That specie of animal has a marked tendency to get hit but automobiles and die at the end of my long driveway to civilization. Including the occasional human - one each so far this year.

Wow. We are absolutely infested with deer here -- you have my sympathy Amadeus, our entire property is surrounded by a 7' deer fence, else it would be a desert -- but we never, and I mean literally-literally NEVER, see a buck.
What's that venison looking at you that way for?

YOu can get the girl off the East Coast, but you can't get the East Coast off the girl... lol.
…looks like flat main beams and fairly symmetrical. Most of the whitetail where we have here are smaller than up north. We have one guy with an really interesting atypical rack. One side looks like moose…we also have a doe and fawn hanging around. we think mom was our fawn from three seasons ago. Her and her mom always show up here and bow we have her fawn, too…

I have one doe that is eating my flowers. The flowers, not the leaves. Does not seem to be skittish and breaks down my fences. Doesn't mind my plant sprayed deer repellents either.

Look carefully at the Althouse buck, particularly IMG_2770. You'll notice the antlers are still covered with tissue commonly called velvet. This indicates the antlers are not yet fully mineralized. The high collagen content means the antlers are still soft and can be distorted by a mishap. That's probably what happened to rehajm's atypical buck. I've seen a buck with half his rack pointing straight down. As long as the blood vessels feeding the bone tissue aren't disrupted, the developing antlers will continue to harden despite the distortion. Such an unlucky buck will probably lose out in the rut, but he'll do better when he grows a new and larger rack in the following year.
Deer are a nuisance because their populations have exploded over the last hundred years. I think the main culprit is hunting seasons. When people hunted for sustenance the idea of a hunting season was nonsense. Year-round deer hunting should be legalized, at least with bow and arrow, and there should be fewer restrictions regarding does. Liberalized hunting will reduce their population and make the deer more wary of humans. The deer will be healthier, and prevalence of deer ticks will likely be reduced, and that will benefit us.
Pests.
A few years ago I was driving my son out to a visit with a friend in the hills west of Hartford, CT ("The Mountain"), where there are lots of high-end homes and corporate offices. It was dark, but we passed a huge buck-like object standing just off the road, which we both assumed was a corporate statue for The Hartford.
As I returned and passed the same spot, the buck was gone and there was no building in the vicinity. That was apparently a real, huge buck.
Quaestor--this has been a horrible year for ticks (apparently all along the east coast). My wife, who is a gardener and who also has an inexhaustible capacity to look into things, has questioned some local naturalists and has been told that the tick explosion is due to the occurrence two years ago of an exceptional year for "mast" production by nut-bearing trees--oaks in particular. The heavy harvest of acorns produced an abundance of food for deer and rodents, resulting in an abundance of baby deer and rodents, which provide breeding grounds for ticks, et voila--2 years later we have lots of deer and mice, and lots and lots of ticks.

OR...it could have been a moose. There are moose in the area I think you are talking about!

You may be right about hunting season, but in additional factor here in the urban and suburban areas is leash laws. This area (Western Washington/Puget Sound) is far more built up than it was when I was growing up here 50 to 60 years ago, but back you never saw deer hanging around like they are now. What you did see, though, were plenty of German shepherds, black labs, and other big dogs as well as smaller ones running around unfenced and unleashed.

The archery deer season here in my part of Illinois runs from the first weekend of October until the 19th of January. Deer tags are cheap and you can run two at the same time.
The problem with suburban deer is that you can't hunt in parks where they hang out.
Deer are just overgrown mice.
At the peak of my mining days I was the general manager of a large surface mine in Michigan, 7 square miles. The biggest pain in my ass was people who felt entitled to shoot deer on the property, and to fish in my discharge ponds.
People wanted to work for me because they could have a deer stand.
I've found that the older deer know better and don't want to be bothered. Loftier pursuits. It's the younger ones who just stand there aimlessly.
