Lem Vibe Bandit చెప్పారు...

A muted I Ran.

The Trees are Down

They are cutting down the great plane-trees at the end of the gardens.
For days there has been the grate of the saw, the swish of the branches as they fall,
The crash of the trunks, the rustle of trodden leaves,
With the ‘Whoops’ and the ‘Whoas,’ the loud common talk, the loud common laughs of the men, above it all.

I remember one evening of a long past Spring
Turning in at a gate, getting out of a cart, and finding a large dead rat in the mud of the drive.
I remember thinking: alive or dead, a rat was a god-forsaken thing,
But at least, in May, that even a rat should be alive.

The week’s work here is as good as done. There is just one bough
On the roped bole, in the fine grey rain,
Green and high
And lonely against the sky.
(Down now!—)
And but for that,
If an old dead rat
Did once, for a moment, unmake the Spring, I might never have thought of him again.

It is not for a moment the Spring is unmade to-day;
These were great trees, it was in them from root to stem:
When the men with the ‘Whoops’ and the ‘Whoas’ have carted the whole of the whispering loveliness away
Half the Spring, for me, will have gone with them.

It is going now, and my heart has been struck with the hearts of the planes;
Half my life it has beat with these, in the sun, in the rains,
In the March wind, the May breeze,
In the great gales that came over to them across the roofs from the great seas.
There was only a quiet rain when they were dying;
They must have heard the sparrows flying,
And the small creeping creatures in the earth where they were lying—
But I, all day, I heard an angel crying:
‘Hurt not the trees.’

I live on 38.5 acres on a mountain top in NW PA. The Amish are inching closer to surrounding me. One family moved nearby three years ago. Last week, two families split 102 acres real close to me. I enjoy dealing with the Amish, but in 5-10 years, the whitetail deer population will be real thin.

I’ve been trying to buy the next door neighbors out with no success. Hopefully they won’t sellout to the men in blue.

A friend has sent me a gift subscription to The New Yorker, and I am astounded at its level of obsessive TDS. I suspect it goes back to some history S.I. Newhouse and Trump had back in the 1980s. Newhouse owned Conde Nast, which publish Vanity Fair and New Yorker, and it is now owned by his son. Not that anyone needs a historical reason to be anti-Trump, but at TNY it's really over the top.

Earlier today there was some discussion about the movie Repo Man, as well as a Grok remake in a discussion with Althouse. However, another cult classic movie is getting a remaster and a sequel, that being This Is Spinal Tap, which will be returning to theaters for a three-day run from July 5th through 7th, remastered in 4K. They are making a sequel, but I'm not sure exactly when it will be coming out.

It has probably been 9 years since my wife and I have watched TV news: it's a waste of time to listen to someone slowly read a shallow summary of what we can read on our own. But tonight, somewhat by accident, we did watch it, and Oh my God is TV news terrible! Forget about "bias"; that ship sailed long ago.
The stories were not even really news: more than 3/4 were tendentious pseudo-predictions, telling their viewers what WILL happen rather than what HAS happened. For example: "With the start of the summer travel season, how the crisis in Iran will affect your wallet," which was nothing but unmoored speculation. 'Experts say that we could see $4.50-5:00 per gallon gas prices if Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz.'
I now better understand why some of my elderly relatives (and some Althouse trolls) seem to live in a state of perpetual anxiety about absolutely everything (even though, if we're being honest, any material conditions that have noticeably changed since January have changed for the better).
The news media deserves every bit of the contempt people have for them (I saw people deliberately honking their horns and or shouting out just to mess up journalists' filming after the Karen Reed trial. The media deserves all of this abuse and more).
*By the way, on the last day of the trial we had THREE helicopters circling downtown Dedham for close to two hours so that three "news teams" could get exactly the same overhead footage of crowds outside the courthouse. These are the same people who claim to care so intensely about the environment...how many tons of CO2 did those helicopter flights emit to produce some some B-roll film in a 5-minute package?

I learned the local/national thing when I was a news director at an AM news station. My general manager (who could be a challenge to work for) drilled that into my head.

Unless I could find a local angle specifically connected to a national issue, stick to other local/regional news.

Now, there were several instances when our local stuff was national, but that was the exception.

You would have to do rap instead of metal, and CB4 did that 3 decades ago. It was just ok.

Leland చెప్పారు...

Prof, I also quit TV News about a decade ago. The reasons are well known. TV uses all the tricks of network drama to keep you tuned in through commercials. That’s not some big secret, and the world is dramatic enough. However, I go through a lot of effort to minimize drama in my personal and professional life. It is not an essential vitamin I need or need a substitute, so I just do without.

I can’t imagine the trauma those, who watched TV news the past two weeks, have suffered through. Well I can, but I have no desire to imagine it, because none of it effected my life that way.

In January of 2024, the day President Trump took office, the average national price of a dozen eggs was: $2.52.

Eggs are now $4.54/dozen. They are now 80% higher than when Trump took office.

The highest average price ever recorded by the Federal Reserve, which tracks egg prices, was in March of 2025, during Trump's second term, at $6.22/dozen.

Eggs have never been $8/dozen.

Eggs hit $10 per dozen in Manhattan for a week or so. In Massachusetts the highest price I saw in Star Market (so not Whole Food$) was $6.98.
If the cost of eggs had only STAYED that high, my suburban chickens would have paid for themselves in 11 years.
(∴ suburban chickens are not a financial win. The only good reasons are that their eggs taste better than even the most expensive store-bought eggs, and they are highly amusing--if extremely stupid--pets)

It seems that most of the record high temperatures that are being reported this week are actually higher lows.

Huh?

Let’s say yesterday’s range of temperatures in your city were a high of 100 and a low of 80.

In many cases it wasn’t the 100 that broke the record but the 80. The low of 80 degrees was the highest low for that date on record.

Bet you didn’t hear that on your local news.
