"Mr. Mamdani’s father recalled that a teacher in Cape Town had once reported Zohran for a surprising answer to the question of what color he was."

"While the other children in the class said white, Black or colored (a term used in South Africa for people of mixed race), Zohran answered 'mustard.' 'I found it most touching,' his father recalled."

From "The Parents Who Helped Shape Zohran Mamdani’s Politics/Zohran Mamdani’s parents, a filmmaker and a professor, gave him the foundation for his run for mayor of New York. But their own political views may open him up to attacks" (NYT).

I didn't realize until I read this article that the "filmmaker mother" — big deal, I thought — made some highly regarded movies, "Mississippi Masala" and "Monsoon Wedding."

Give it to New York. Good and hard. I hope this guy wins and when they come crying to the federal government for the next bailout or when the big new skyscraper experiences Sudden 747 Onset, they can go fuck themselves.

There's already a "Stop Zohran at all costs" movement in NYC. People are demanding Curtis Silwa drop out of the General and endorse Adams. And the same is true of Cuomo.

Its interesting how good Indians (subcontinent not Typee) are at politics in the English speaking world. They seem to zip to the top of almost every political party. Wonder why.

RCOCEAN II म्हणाले...

I didn't realize until yesterday that Zohran had earned the wrath of some zionists by refusing to state that his first foreign trip would be to Israel. This seems to be the standard thing every candidate says in NYC. Zohran says he will refuse to visit until War Criminal Bibi is out of office.

Because NYC is very diverse, (70 percent non-white, 15 percent Jewish, 15 percent white other), and 30 percent immigrant, the number of groups that must be pandered to is insane. For example, pleasing both the NYC Jews and Muslims is weird balancing trick. This is America's future.

While South Africa whites (especially the Boers) aren't doing so well, the "colored" and Indian populations are doing fine. So is the small Jewish population (250K). I'm surprised Zohran's family left but the opportunities in NYC were probably much more lucrative than in Cape Town.

In the DR “mix race” translates as “mestizo”. In Spanish “mustard” translates as “mostaza”. I’ve never heard “mostaza” used in a racial context. Though “mostaza” and mestizo” sound like they might be related. I don’t know.

Wince म्हणाले...

Mamdani has credited his parents with providing him a “privileged upbringing” that included constant discussion of politics and global affairs. But at a moment of intense political fights over conflict in the Middle East, his parents’ critical views of Israel and his father’s academic work on settler colonialism and human rights could make them a target of attacks from the right.

There is a lot of support among liberals for Islam (especially for massive Muslim immigration). There is something to this union. Like the Woke, Muslims absolutely loathe Christians and Jews, are okay with abortion and easy divorce, tolerate sex work (likely the only real work a woman can get in the most intolerant Muslim communities) and believe that interest charged on loans is unethical or usurious. So these people are all checking the same boxes.

Looking up “masala” : In English, "masala" generally refers to a mixture of spices used in South Asian cuisine. It can also refer to a dish, often a curry, that is flavored with this spice mixture.

At times like these is always good to remember the ancient wisdom of the ages… ‘Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar’
Meaning: “The phrase "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" suggests that not everything has a hidden, deeper meaning, and that some things are simply what they appear to be. It implies that overthinking or assigning symbolic significance to simple objects or events can be unnecessary.”

Ampersand म्हणाले...

The only silver lining in the rise of Mamdani involves the inverse of Lenin's "worse is better" strategy. Mamdani's inevitable failures ought to accelerate the process of delegitimizing socialism and bring about a return to a moderate capitalist/social safety net society. The problem with this one is that the feedback loop is skewed by the socialist-adjacent media. Failures will be attributed to insufficient ruthlessness. "Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world."

LVB (9:34am):
I checked the Spanish Royal Academy's authoritative 'Diccionario de la Lengua Espanola' (link), and 'mestizo' and 'mostaza' are unrelated. Both come from vulgar Latin, but 'mestizo' is from mixticius, meaning "mixed", while 'mostaza' is from mustaceus, meaning "must cake" ('must' is not-yet-fermented wine, so basically grape juice). How that turned into mustard (sinapi in Latin) is not obvious: apparently must was used to make mustard. Anyway, the resemblance between the two words (closer in Spanish, due to sound changes) is coincidental.

Diversity seems to have ruined our politics. Back when virtually all American voters were of white European stock, politics was mainly about the competition between differing policies and governing philosophies. Now, we seemingly can only think and speak of politics in demographic terms: Which candidate will appeal (or won't appeal) to Hispanics, or to Muslims, or Jews, or women, or blacks, or whites, or whomever? It's the main lens through which we seem to look at politics anymore.

It is the lens that the globalist oligarchs want us to see things through.

But the reason Trump is triggering the left so hard is because he is breaking the chains and destroying the institutions they used to control people.

One of those is the constant racism and racial division of the left.

His mustard comment. Maybe he meant mustard seed colors, not mustard yellow. There are three colors of mustard seed - black, brown and yellow. Look at pickling spice in the grocery store sometime.

His family. I watched Mississippi Masala and it's hard to believe that the son of the woman who made that film would think of driving 7 million Jews out of Israel or 324 million Americans out of America. Yet Mamdani founded an Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) SJP group at Bowdoin and driving out everyone but the indigenous out is what the American branch of the SJP wants.

*(Or maybe we just have to give the land back and have some kind of feudal vassal relationship where we never really own anything and some weird tribal council owns all land rights. )

Mississippi Masala is watchable and when you realize the director's son is running for Mayor of New York on an anti-white, free-this-free-that, no-police platform, it's interesting. It's real background. But it's only background.

I live in the former Northwest Territory, which we got from the British when they recognized our independence. In turn, they got it in trade with the Iroquois after the French and Indian War when the Brits traded some other land the Iroquois wanted. If we give up the former NWT, then we get back those lands the Iroquois consider sacred.

Wait, the Miami, Illinois, and the other tribes have objections? They’ll have to settle the land claim dispute with the Iroquois. Maybe another round of Beaver Wars.
